Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

This is what eventually happens, when a beta turns out to be perfect.

Hey, I’m a Shellback, as well.

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

You got it. By the way, what happens if I received the beta on a ship at sea heading east, and then crossed the international dateline while I soft reset the amp blocks, and the new blocks were reset to the previous settings?

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

At the obvious risk of sounding like an old guy, the usual culprits are typically (but not exclusively): a) too little dynamics / too much signal compression (and I am not simply referring to the use of a compressor); b) forgetting that the guitar has a volume and tone controls and leaving...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

One of the many reasons, why I gradually have gravitated to the FA presets for amp block settings.
  8. skydog

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

No bugs found, either in beta firmware or the editor. 25 beta modeled amps are closer than ever in characteristic tone and response, to the actual amps that I own (32 of 34 are modeled by Fractal Audio). I shoot for modeled amps to sound like their real counterparts. I try not to fuss with...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Easy. Use Axe Edit… Go to the preset list page; Select “Manage” highlight one, some or all; Right click; select “Reset Amp Blocks” Axe Edit will step though each amp channel in the selected preset(s), and soft reset the amps.

Right on. The original fractal presets sound fantastic.

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Wow, that sounds rough. After just a few days using the beta, I bought the missus a new mink stole, Aunt Bertie found mental sunshine, our family recovered from harmful radiation, the kids stopped sucking their thumbs, junior was finally able to get the drawbridge oiled, and the whole family...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

No, not necessary at all. I just decided to go back to the Fractal presets. They sound great with the new modeling changes. I read the posts here saying that new presets would be necessary. I’m checking it out, and don’t think that’s the case.
  13. skydog

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

It’s ironic comedy. Tube amps are what’s being modeled. Speaking of the beta… I reloaded my Axe FX III with the factory preset A, B, and C banks, and batch soft-reset all of the amps with Axe Edit. I’ve been randomly selecting presets. Everything sounds terrific.
  14. skydog

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

For the Cygnus beta, I’m not comparing old sounds to new sounds. If the models more accurately reflect results of improved measurement methods of the real tube amp circuits, then I’m all in, 100%. I play covers. I try my best, to precisely emulate how the few greats and my few favourites played...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Beta report: Software loaded perfectly. Everything looks like it’s showing up in Axe Edit (new pedal…) Soft-reset worked great in Axe Edit. Fractal Fender and Marshall presets sound great after soft reset (tried these, as had limited time so far). No bugs found by me. Other products: I also own...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Totally agree. The Axe FX devices through a great reference amp and then through a great guitar speaker cabinet move plenty of air and sound every bit like a real amp.
  17. skydog

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Oops, forgot to write the concluding sentence: I cannot imagine why I would ever need to simulate a PPIMV into an FA model. I already have an Output control.

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

    Nice double entendre - funny.
  19. skydog

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

The lament for fleeting, current individual settings seems counterproductive, as the modeling becomes increasingly more accurate. This isn’t random change - it is directional change. As long as the improvements can be implemented on the same hardware platform, these improvements are free. Plus...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

Sometimes. Adding a PPIMV into a real amp is a tweak that can often sound “better” than using a power brake when lowering dB is a goal. Turning the PPIMV pot to full takes it essentially out of the circuit.

    My JCM800 Just Blew Up

Yikes. I just checked back into this thread, as I was getting email notices. I discovered that the OP was Cliff Chase and I didn’t realize it. My JCM800 Just Blew Up

A failure like that is rare. They can last forever, and very repairable. True for most amps built before 1981, and anything still built point-to-point. Even the rare catastrophic stuff. Here’s a mid 1960’s Ampeg that was pulled out of a house fire. It belonged to one of our bass players. In...

    My JCM800 Just Blew Up

Why Steve Vai 'Wasn't a Big Fan of the Marshall Sound'.How Carvin Made His 'Favorite' Amp

Not purposely being a contrarian, but plenty of guitar greats have used Marshalls and didn’t have an “ice-pick-in-the-forehead” tone. I can totally understand, if SV’s preference was for Carvin, and their strong motivation to supply him with amps. It’s his individual decision, and it certainly...

POLL: the single amp channel for set-and-forget

Never found it satisfactory to set-and-forget with real amplifiers or the Axe FX, when performing live or recording in multiple venues. That’s why these things have controls. A great amp (and Fractal gear) should clean up relatively, using the guitar controls. I have multiple guitars, mostly...

Which has the biggest impact on tone from a Les Paul?

Please consider that I prefaced about not playing über high gain. That said, my guitars sound great through both a 1969 plexi, and a 1981 JCM800. That amp has quite a bit of gain.
  36. skydog

Which has the biggest impact on tone from a Les Paul?

Yes, but it’s not your fault - it’s mine. I was answering a question directly. When sample pots of sellers that advertise their products as vintage are compared against the mean nominal values of actual vintage pots, the Bare Knuckle vintage pots show the least amount of variance to the NOS...

Bare Knuckle. I have a bunch not metered values compared in Excel.
  38. skydog

Which has the biggest impact on tone from a Les Paul?

I have really old and kind-of old Les Pauls. And I’m going to also include early 60’s LPs and SG’s in my answer. Note that I don’t play metal, so the guitar’s acoustic properties are really important - therefore my two elements below: When it comes to only the guitar, I’ve arrived at two big...

EQ curve preset that mimics regular guitar cabs for FRFR users?

Sounds like you’re a fan. I am too. But I’m not a fan of FRFR. They just don’t work for me. I just suggested how I solved the problem.
  41. skydog

EQ curve preset that mimics regular guitar cabs for FRFR users?

No shit, lol. I’m telling you, that FRFR is not the solution to your problem. I have the III, the FM9, and the FM3. The approach I suggested is the solution. If you stick with FRFR, then so be it.
  42. skydog

EQ curve preset that mimics regular guitar cabs for FRFR users?

For live, get yourself a flat response amplifier. Split off from the amp block (before the cab block) to an additional Out block, and send that to real guitar speakers in a real cab on-stage. Send the original chain (with the cab block) to Out1, and to FOH. Works for me - may work for you.

Who else never really uses the drive block(s)?

Right. Mostly never. Only if I’m covering somebody who used a FF, Big Muff, or Foxx Tone. Otherwise, it’s all in the amp block. Does pushing the input parameter count in the amp block? I do that, when I want the amp to to have that characteristic.

Don't Work on Amp Models When You're Overworked and Tired

I just repaired a 2203 for a friend of a friend. An original amp from 1981. Fixed and restored to nominal, this amp plays huge. Absolutely crazy loud through a 1960TV. Clean & hi gain amps

Agreed. I’d add my vintage Traynor to this list, as well. “Hi Gain” is bit of a subjective term. It’s difficult to say “below this level” and “above this level” in a precise way. Almost any amp can be made “hi gain” with FA gear. Then simply adjust the parameter(s) down to nominal for clean. Or...
