1st Order Butterworth Filter / Guitar Tone Control

A guitar with passive electronics and a tone control isn't just a 1st order filter - its quite a bit more complex than that as it interacts with the inductance of the pickups. A 1st order low pass filter would just roll off high frequencies. But as the pickup is attached to the whole thing...

    Speaker Thump gives me anxiety

Finally had time to load the new firmware onto my unit and started playing with the new Speaker Thump setting on my favorite plexi preset. I turned the knob to 5, and instantly panicked. The sound this thing produces is exactly the sound that's burned into my brain as "Oh my God, you're about...

Why don't they just make some amps?

This is the reason here. The Fractal modelers sound great through mass produced studio monitors or powered cabinets meant for PA use. There's already a huge selection of these things at every possible price point - not sure how Fractal turns entering this market into anything that makes it...

    Brit 800 weird

Which real life JCM800 model did you try? I played a post Marshall-never-told-anyone redesign JCM-800 2210 for years, and these things sounded NOTHING like the 2203/2204 or even the pre-redesign 2210s.

    About that Blackglass B7K Model

The Helix GK 800RB model has the basic EQ down right, but the distortion sound at least to me didn't sound quite like the real thing. Maybe it has something to do with me being used to the real thing only happening at a bazillion dB. A while back someone made a small run pedals that tried to...

    About that Blackglass B7K Model

In particular, SOMEONE needs to make a good model of the old GK 800RB hitting the rails. One of the classic 80s bass sounds, and every bit as practical in real life as cranking a Plexi. I've not heard a good replication of this sound anywhere. Doubt many folks have put time into modeling a...

    Drive Models Suck

XiTone is cool enough to actually document the speakers they use, which is pleasant and unexpected. XiTone's 12" active wedge uses the Eminence Beta-12CX, which has a displacement of 188.6cc. The Eminence Governor (closest thing I can find to a Celestion V30 with proper specs) does 64.4cc. So...

    Drive Models Suck

Simple speaker diameter tells you incredibly little about its output. The real measure is total displacement and the thermal limits. Guitar speakers in particular have TINY displacements. That's fine - they're largely based on technology from the 1960s, and are meant to sound pleasing when...

  23. H

    Ooooh... Charts and Graphs Redux

That's fascinating - the III's right on top of the real amp's curve. Any idea if blue line mystery product's deviation in the 100Hz range is a function of the model itself being off, vs the taper of the "pots" not matching the taper used by the real 5150? I realize that figuring this stuff out...

Has anyone sniffed/looked at the FASLINK II protocol?

Just remembering what FAS has said in the past, FASLINK II uses single ended signaling. This presumably means the three wires in the cable are power, ground, and a bidirectional signal wire. As this is all custom hardware the signaling could be one of a handful of existing protocols or something...

Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp

I'm glad biasing the virtual tubes to where it sounds good won't void my warranty! How to change rosewood LP to sound like a maple strat\tele?

You Paul is never going to deliver a convincing Tele sound - they're just so wildly different. Even my Hamer with the Fluence pickups in the single coil voicing doesn't really get close. It just sounds like a brighter, clearer Les Paul. Great sound, but I'd never mistake it for a Tele. Your...

You guys are in for another treat.

As someone who's played lots of bass, the big deal about voice coil heating for me has always been how it decreases volume. Leading to the bass player turning up. Which makes it heat up more and get even less efficient. This process finally halts once my speaker's voice coil melts. Lots of bass...

Do the Axe-Fx 3 mark 1 and 2 have any differences in tones or more features?

The biggest feature the MKII has over the original is that the MKII is what's currently in being made! The better display on the MKII is pretty nifty, IMO. The better viewing angle on it fixes one of my very few annoyances with my 1st gen Axe FX 3.

You can do this by linking your pitch shifter blocks to a global block. You can then stick the VC's "shift" and "mix" knobs in the perform menu. Set mix to 0 or 100 to bypass or enable the VC. Voila, one knob to change shift amount in all presets and a second to bypass/enable in all presets.

    Axe FX III Tuner Accuracy

Yup, all the different sweetened or compensated are just various compromises that improve tuning for certain cases at the expense of others. Doesn't mean they're not useful to some folks, though. Axe FX III Tuner Accuracy

The strobe wheel on the Axe seems every bit as accurate as my Strobostomp HD. Why do I still have a Peterson? I play a lot of bass an my bass rig is basically just a 5 string bass right into my amp. Few non-strobe tuners do a passable job on low B strings. 🤷‍♂️
