    Hmm, not certain about this....

Kinda bad analogy in music gear of all things. I paid a few hundred for a Fender Twin Reverb in 1985. I am not exactly sure what it's worth now but it's a heck of a lot more!

I might be getting off the Axe-Fx train

"When I was a boy we didn’t have fancy editing software. We edited our rack units my scrolling through multiple sub menus displayed on tiny monochrome LCDs. It made us CAVEmen." There, fixed it for ya. I was a caveman myself but why on earth should that make me argue for the most advanced...

Axe FX vs Amplitube vs Revalver vs TH3 vs Pod Farm vs 8505 vs Guitar Rig vs Helix: 5150 edition

Very professionally done, kudos man! I blindly picked Helix from this but interesting that GR5 is pretty good. My favorite lead tone is in GR5 but I've never found a good rhythm tone - probably due to IR's. You've inspired me to try it out with external loaders, thanks!

    Headrush Pedal board. Eleven modeling

Actually the reverbs are quite known not to be up to par and even the development team acknowledges that. No updates have brought improvements so far though. I have been very close to thinking FX8 would be ideal as well but then I actually don't want to waste valuable instrument time with deep...

Thanks, I appreciate that. Need lush verbs so not buying into this. Same reason for Helix to fail in my book. I thought either might have been the perfect effects board since I don't care much about the sims anyway. Seems they are not really there yet.

I was originally getting exited when I found that site with more "in-depth" data - until I realized what it actually said! Auch! However, it's still not computing in my brain why the state-of-the-art stuff needs to have what seems like a +17 year old interface. The effectiveness of the process...

Singtall Superpack of presets are ready!

You mean you wouldn't hand the man $20 even for a few presets if they work for you? :( The way I understand this it may even save you from spending time adjusting your tones after a firmware upgrade because adjustments will be included in future updates.

Doesn't have to be on the floor for my sake but none of that really explains why the interface should have to suck, even if a nice one had to cost more. It seems a lot of people certainly do prefer a floor unit (because they can carry it) and hence the detachable interface makes a whole lot of...

Returning from the Kemper swamp - back to the Axe!

Well, a couple things to note. If you just put a cabinet inside a box you don't get the double isolation of the recording chamber. In the solution I talk about you put the entire iso cab inside another isolated box. If you want to record real speakers at decent volume in an apartment building at...

Returning from the Kemper swamp - back to the Axe!

Well, what I mean is; rather than juat having a closed box with some insulation inside, the cabinet AND mic-room should be in a cabinet separated from the outer box. Returning from the Kemper swamp - back to the Axe!

Just be careful making too many decisions based on a lunchbox - while some will sound fine in a video it's just not as full in reality as more intricate monsters. Returning from the Kemper swamp - back to the Axe!

The digital world is different - we can all claim that this or that amp is captured to perfection but at the end of the day the tone is being created in very different way and probably has different characteristics. Yeah well, I could argue the opposite - we all know exactly how those cans taste and even how they feel on a hot summer day. But chosing an amp through a video? What Brand of strings do YOU like best ? ( include guitar type )

I makes sense. I believe the tension you need is closer to 09-42's but I need to test it string by string. I really think D'Addario needs to make an NYXL replacement chart.

    Presets and Pickups

Believe me, it's the scale length. Tight Mega-rhythm in Gibson scale (you probably detune too) is going to be much muddier than 25 1/2". You'd need a significantly heavier gauge and then it's a different tone again altogether.
  35. Winther

What Brand of strings do YOU like best ? ( include guitar type )

But did you need to change the gauge? They are supposed to have higher tension. When I haven't tried yet it's only because I need to pick each gauge individually.

Tried EB's, DM's, GHS, Fender and many others. Always end up very disappointed and go straight back the D'Addario's. These days you even have an "entry level" unit in the AX8. If your worry is a new flagship any time soon, get the AX8 and find out if Fractal is for you or not at a limited investment. You might even want to keep it for an easy gigging rig or extra processing power whenever you decide to upgrade.

    Pickup Opinions

Lol, obviously the string has already instigated what I am talking about. But considering how little difference you get from a guitar made of i.e. aluminum, the difference in composition in woods has such a tiny fraction of a difference that pickup matching is all in the mind. I have total strat...
  43. Winther

    Pickup Opinions

The wood will only effect the tone through the pickup housing. While the magnets produce the majority of the vibration the wood will vibrate the coils through the housing just a tiny bit. It's debatable if it's even possible to detect a difference and in reality you can easily get the exact same...

Axe 3, you say? TigerSHARCs are phased out without replacement, it seems

The code is not (easily) portable to a general purpose CPU and nobody - with some insight - are suggesting that. The fact is that there's much stronger DSP's available today so even if the transfer is a massive task I am sure it will be worth it and the work is probably well underway. If you...

  48. Winther

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

That's affirmative because while the offset may be fixed, the notes you play are not. The machine doesn't know what to shift and will still need the detection time followed by processing time.

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

Maybe too harsh but I mean relatively sub-par. Relative to awesome amp models and relative to incredible reverbs and delays. Relative to having DSP power that TC couldn't have even imagined 10% of in their craziest feverish wet nirvana dreams back when they already did better. Axe's pitch seems...

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

You're absolutely right - the perceived hardware limitation is only due to a sub-par and CPU-hungry algorithm. As I mentioned earlier TC could do this in the 90's on far inferior DSP's. (Not trying to slam, don't know priorities, just saying the hardware is plenty for better pitchsh.)

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

I don't disagree at all Rex, but there are pitch shifters available that can do it. I'd much prefer to just drop the tuning as I find it almost vulgar to feel the body resonate at different frequencies but on the other hand baritone scales simply limit my abilities.
  54. Winther

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

TC were always strong in pitch type effects. They had suberb rack types already in the 90's so with the hardware evolution it's not too difficult to toss those same algorithms into a cheap pedal.

    Pitch Shifter on Ax8

I don't know if this really has much priority in Cliff's book but I would like to mention a reason for better pitch that may not be even considered: If I could drop a full step in a quality that was undetectable in the mix, I could write songs in A which is lower than what I can tune on any...

    Learn Solos or Practice Scales?

Good point about fretboard notes. You can spend a ton of time learning the notes - you can also spend it playing! The actual note names don't add much value. If you know the note number in the key you are playing, then it stays the same through all keys, and it's highly relevant to the original...

    Learn Solos or Practice Scales?

As limiting as scale practice can be they can when applied correctly be rather liberating. They help you comprehend and "pattern out" the fretboard in relation to chords and arpeggios while also help you getting from "a" to "b", sort of speak, when improvising. Like many have already stated both...
