Are there any FRFR solutions out there that can compete with a 2x12 + power amp?

Yes, I don't to add extra gear to my gigging life.

Are there any FRFR solutions out there that can compete with a 2x12 + power amp?

I just did a gig where I played both. I used a QSC K10 and also a Quilter Toneblock 200 into a Mesa 1x12 loaded w/ EV12L. I guess it's just too many years playing guitar amps because the K10 was just too weird tonally - too bright and too woofy. Once I plugged into the Mesa cab I was loving my...

AX8 edit freezes after being idle

My energy saver settings (Mac OSX 10.9.4) actually had both display and hard drives set to 'never' sleep. Today at rehearsal everything worked fine all day, and I even manually put the display to sleep. Anyway, I was able to program some great stuff today because the software editor was running...

AX8 edit freezes after being idle

I'm having issues with having my laptop hooked up in rehearsal and using AX8 edit. It boots up fine, connects, makes edits and saves no problem. Then I go back about 30 minutes later and the 'Comm Paused' screen is frozen. I quit and reboot, disconnect AX8 and it doesn't reconnect. I can't be...

Are you successfully using your AX8 via s/pdif?

I use an Apogee Rosetta -> MOTU 828mk2 -> Logic X (OSX 10.9.4) I flip the Rosetta to 48k and set the MOTU to sync to S/PDIF input. Logic settings are 48k also of course. It's always worked flawlessly for me. The analog outputs on the AX-8, both XLR and 1/4" sound great, so using the digital out...

Am I the only one who has downsized my pedal board?

After about 8 months with the AX8 I'm ready to sell 75% of my pedals. I'm keeping my Strymon El Cap, Keeley SuperMod Workstation, Wampler Tumnus, EMMA Reezafratzitz, and mini tuner for a small B rig pedalboard, but everything else is outta here. I think mostly it's been an emotional journey of...

    Carrying case?

I've tried every kind of case. Sometimes I put the AX8 in my spinner (4wheel) suitcase and check it when I fly. It means I can't fit my shoes though so that doesn't work if I'm away for more than a few days. Suitcases are a bit bulky for me. DJ backpacks made for laptops and controllers seem to...

    Carrying case?

Yup, I want everything in 1 case to rule them all - full protection, lightweight, small but roomy, inexpensive but really well made, etc etc etc, hahaha. In the end I split the middle and now have a road case for flying and a backpack for local. Here's my backpack after I made some little foam...

For those struggling to dial in tones

Not a bad thought - full blown AX-8+ with same processing as AxeFXii. For me the AX-8 is perfection itself: everything I need and nothing I don't.
  16. PhillyGTR

    Carrying case?

I'm a minimalist and fly frequently so the 10" is a perfect snug fit. I have a mini expression pedal that takes up very little room. I think I could fit my laptop in the bag as well. Update** In the end I went with an Icipio backpack I had laying around for quick grab n go gigs and bought a road...

For those struggling to dial in tones

In my most humble opinion, options and capability can be paralyzing sometimes. Being able to switch from a guitar sound at one end of the spectrum to something completely opposite is incredible, I mean, what a time we live in where this is even possible without a complex switching system...

    Live backup rig

So what do you think of the RK flyrig? I've considered both the Plexi and the RK version. From what I've heard I don't like the sound of the gain...kinda fizzy.

    Live backup rig

I have a Vox Stomplab IIG in my gig bag at all times, which I got used for $40. I bought it on a whim because it was so cheap but it actually sounds quite good. I programmed some basic gig ready patches and then, lo and behold, I had a flight where airlines lost my bags, including AX8 in flight...

    AX8 Drives

The hands plus the drive equals the sound. That's how I hear it. I think this sort of explains why there's such varied experience across the guitar universe. I know guys who use a stock Boss OD-1 and sound amazing and others who use a Klon and sound...well, not amazing. I'm not dissing the Klon...

    Carrying case?

I travel quite a bit with my AX8 - planes trains and automobiles so my needs are: good protection, lightweight and simple. Protection is obviously the most important but weight is a major concern so that rules out road cases. I want something that has nice padding all around the edges and a...

    AX8 Tremolo just doesn't sound...right

I did take note that the triangle and log were my favs in terms of wave shape. The thing I'm not loving is how linear the rise and dip sounds. It's too perfect to something. Maybe I'll try to use a different mod source like an LFO or something. So far I've always found a way to get the AX8 to do...

    AX8 Tremolo just doesn't sound...right

I've been really loving my AX8 for the past 6 months. The more I use it the more I appreciate it. That being said I just can't get the tremolo to sound right. When compared to my Fender amps and my Strymon Flint there's just something wrong about the shape of the wave. does anyone have any tips...

    In ear monitors sound different?

I look at the FOH engineer and monitor engineer as band members - because they are. The musicians and the engineers all help to create the sound so having a good relationship with them is key, just like getting along with the bass player haha. I'm a studio guy and have a really good...

    Wish Assignable rotary control

I just keep coming back to the idea that the knobs are sitting right there...unused for the most part...depth and presence. I hate the idea of adding an outboard physical editor when those 2 little perfect rotary encoders are built into the AX8. The whole point of this for me is a sort of pack n...

Prince When Doves Cry octave solo patch

I did a session today and the guitarist I was recording referenced When Doves Cry intro guitar solo which is like a fuzz / octaver sound. I dunno - if there's (2) functions that you use all the time I think you'd easily know what those labels mean. Your muscle memory would take over in no time and the labels would be moot. I'm mainly thinking about Presence and Depth FYI.

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

I do a ton of jazz, r&B and gospel in addition to rock and country and I've always felt like the Quilter stuff was literally perfect for what I do. The whole guitar world seems hell bent on light break up Fender to crunchy Marshall to all out Mesa gain. But for Funk, R&B, fancy chords, Prince...

    AX8 Drives

This is a really interesting thread - after about 3 weeks with the AX8 the drives were the only effect I hadn't really delved into - partially because the amps and cabs sound so good and partially because the drive models just didn't hit my ears as 'immediate, punchy, dynamic' as my analog...

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

My experience is the Magnum 44 doesn't have nearly the clean headroom nor volume of the 101. That being said the Magnum is a great little power amp given the size and cost, it just breaks up sooner than the Quilter and isn't as loud.

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

I'm the one who inadvertently called the Tone Block (Quilter) a Power Block (Crate). I'm pretty sure most of this thread is about the Quilter Tone Block. I owned a Power Block years ago and didn't like the way it sounded.

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

Yeah, I guess all in all better to have the headroom than not - maybe I'll look for a 2nd Tone Block (not Power Block as I mistakenly called it) instead of the lower wattage 101. One thing the Quilter doesn't get enough credit for is the FUNK tone - Spanky clean James Brown / Meters / Prince for...

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

The Powerblock is 200 watts vs the 101 at 50 watts so I can't vouch personally that the 101 will have enough headroom for bass. Obviously the cabinets you use for each situation are the biggest factor as the Quilter stuff is pretty neutral sounding. In my experience the Powerblock sounded really...

    In ear monitors sound different?

I struggle with this all the time. The audio takes a long round trip to get back to you and, not to throw anyone under the bus but...it is always always something with the monitor desk...always. Monitor engineer: "I swear, there's no compression, no EQ, the gain is at unity, etc..." But...

    Looking for AX8 Advice

I'm a pro player of 25 years and do gigs from arenas and stadiums to dive bars and everything in between. My first modeler was a Roland GP-100 about 20 years ago, which I liked for travel FX but always used a real amp on stage. Then a POD floorboard after that (I hated the sound). I used the...

    "Crappy mode"

+1 on the wah wah. Try your patch after turning off the the auto-engage. It sounds like the wag function may be kicking in randomly. The simplest test would be to unplug your expression pedal and see if the problem persists. Of course, I'm assuming you are using an exp pedal...

Pedalboard power amp options for guitar and bass for fly rigs

I use the Quilter Power Block 200 and it's a great little power amp. Nice clean power, plenty LOUD, reliable and weighs about 4 lbs. I've used it for guitar, both with the AX8 and with my pedals, bass (straight in no pedals) and keys w/ a passive FRFR speaker. It kicks a** for all those...

Noobie - down the AX8 rabbit hole pt.1

I can see the whole cab IR thing will be the next aspect I'll probably delve into - I'm def gonna try a K10 first, then the KW12. I hope the K10s sound good because I'd bring 2 and run a stereo rig.

Interesting. have any suggestions as to FR speakers, placement, settings or any other tips for squeezing every drop of goodness out it? I have so many types of power amps and cabs (both tube and solid state) I just kinda felt like using those without the cab sims would be the best 'guitar'...

Noobie - down the AX8 rabbit hole pt.1

Tweaking presets is exactly what I've been doing. I'm really curious about the whole FRFR speaker thing. I may try that on my next gig. I used a Hot Rod Deville 4x10 last night, which typically I don't like. Plugging the AX8 straight into the return sounded GREAT. I did turn off the power amp...

If you just force yourself for a couple hours the editing on the unit becomes pretty intuitive. Good to know there's so much depth. Can't say I'm surprised given all the flexibility. A perfect example was on day 1 I was like 'no auto wah??' And then I found the modifiers and the ADSR and boom, a perfect envelope wah effect. Thanks!

Noobie - down the AX8 rabbit hole pt.1

Yup - sometimes with pedals / amp setup you wonder why your sound is so different gig to gig but I suspect there's some psychosomatic stuff going on. With the AX8 you can be certain it is all in your mind, for the most part. I listened back to the recording of the show last night and it sounded...
