Setting up drive advice required

Personally I like the bar. I use it to carry or move the unit all the time. It's in a well balanced position and it also protects the knobs from mishap. I've never once thought it was in the way of anything. Different tastes I guess

Configuring the FX8 to control my amp with the mini amp gizmo was very easy using the FX8-edit! I now have one footswitch on my FX8 that toggles between clean/dirty channels and another to toggle the amp volume boost. I can finally sell my G-System!

Default output level of drive blocks seems too high...

That is an option however that involves a lot more steps when auditioning different drive types than simply ctrl clicking the drive type in FX8-edit. This is mostly what I do now accept for those few drive models where I have to be quick my external vol/mute.

Oh yeah, it makes it difficult to audition different drives when I'm using the FX8 with my acoustic guitar. A number of the drives will cause immediate feedback when I assign them to the block. I have to immediately mute my volume and edit the drive params before I can audition the drive...

Is there a way to change scenes on footswitches 1-4 and use 5-8 as stomp boxes?

Yes, your scenes can be configured this way! In the FX8 manual see the Scene Revert section in the Scenes chapter. Sounds like you have the Scene Revert set to ON. Try setting it to OFF.

You are missing the required step of assigning the block to a footswitch which also needs to be done in FX8-edit. The first time I used FX8-edit I did the same thing. It was a real head-scratcher until I figured it out!
