Axe-Edit 3.14.6 (public beta for Big Sur)

I'm really grateful, thank you. I take it that the USB driver doesn't need to be updated?

Axe-Edit update for Mac OS 11 (Big Sur)

Thank you. :) I'll wait for the patch before I upgrade, then. It's better to wait a while before attempting that sort of upgrade anyway. ;)

Volume pedal: sound jumping back to max

Hello, I have the following setup: Axe-FX II XL+ MFC-101 connected with Faslink EV-1 connected as an expression pedal to the MFC (XP2 port) The EV is configured as a wah in some presets and it works perfectly. But in another preset I want to use it as a volume pedal. It worked before, but I...

Axe-Fx II Beta USB Driver for Mac OS X Catalina

Apple doesn't develop anything related to the Axe-FX USB driver, so you might be looking at the wrong driver. In any case, just check whether Axe-Edit is able to communicate with the Axe. If it is, then you have the correct driver installed and working. ;)

Axe-Fx II Beta USB Driver for Mac OS X Catalina

This is not a new behavior. Just right-click and select Open instead of double-clicking (this is how you tell GateKeeper that you're taking responsibility for executing an unsigned program).

    Software FracPad III - iOS/Android/Mac/Win Editor for the Axe-Fx II/XL/XL+, AX8/FX8, Axe-Fx III and FM3/FM9

Just a short post to say thank you for Fracpad. Following the doubts about the 64 bits version of the USB driver, I looked for other solutions to control my Axe, and followed AlGrenadine's advice. The MD-BT01 works perfectly, and Fracpad is really nice to use on a 10" screen. The Bluetooth...

Just one more data point, I just upgraded one of my Macs to Catalina and tested it with the beta driver, it works fine. Thanks again. :D

This is fantastic news! Thank you for telling us, it will make everything a lot simpler for some people, including me. :D

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Thank you very much. :) Does this mean that I could use a Mac instead of an iPad to communicate through the Yamaha or the Roland adaptors with the Axe? A tablet is nice, but a computer is more convenient, so that'd be great.

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, FA isn't responsible for Apple dropping 32-bits support in macOS. On the other hand, Apple started the transition ten years ago, and almost two years ago it was a known fact that it was ending soon. Two years ago, the Axe-FX II XL+ was still sold...

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Thanks for your answer, AlGrenadine. Just to clarify a few details: You mean on macOS, I assume? If so, using Fracpad in macOS isn't a solution for me. On iOS, I assume that no driver is required (since it doesn't exist for this platform anyway). The Yamaha adaptor is in stock at Thomann's...

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Not upgrading can sometimes be a choice, at least as long as the OS receives security updates, sure. But finding a solution is still important. For instance, next year I'll buy a new computer and hand this one down to someone in my family. The new one will run Catalina, with no downgrade...
  14. S

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

I won't have time to test solutions before next week, but even if FA still refuses to update the driver, it can be made to work. Here are the solutions I'm going to test: Using Fracpad for macOS: not sure it's going to work, since its web site doesn't say whether it requires the driver or not...
  15. S

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

If it works in VirtualBox, it's perfect, thanks for the feedback. FA's USB driver is the only thing remaining on my system that isn't 64 bits, so being unable to upgrade just for this would be annoying (and I plan to replace that computer next year anyway, so I need to solve this problem).
  16. S

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

You're right... I was still in the "old school" way of thinking, that partitioning the drive was required. With APFS it's different. I'll look into this, thank you for the pointer. Edit: nevertheless, rebooting just to upload the firmware and then rebooting again to get back into Catalina for...

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Does anyone have experience with virtualization? If I keep a Mojave install in a VM, will it be able to communicate with the Axe to send the firmware? I'm not clear on what the guest OS can do with the USB ports.

Axe-Edit replacement solutions for macOS Catalina

The workaround is rather inconvenient: having to plug / unplug an additional device from the back panel of the Axe, which isn't always easily accessible, will get old very fast if I have to do it every day. So forgive me for looking for a more stable solution. Moreover, the workaround is...

Axe-Edit replacement solutions for macOS Catalina

Sorry, I should have been more precise. Axe-Edit for the Axe-FX II seems to have been ported to 64 bits, but it'd be best if someone with more technical knowledge confirmed, because the report made by macOS isn't too reliable. At least System Monitor.app says it is. On the other hand, the USB...

Axe-Edit replacement solutions for macOS Catalina

If I remember correctly, the Axe-FX III is following USB standards, so it doesn't require any driver, while older models aren't, so a driver is required to load a special firmware onto the device at runtime. And Axe-Edit 3 is only for the Axe-FX III, as far as I know. So it might be that the...

Axe-Edit replacement solutions for macOS Catalina

Hello, Although I'm still hoping that FA will update the USB driver and Axe-Edit to 64 bits, I'm starting to worry that they won't. Since losing the ability to configure the Axe would effectively mean that the device is unusable, I'm trying to get a feel of the various solutions to replace...
  22. S

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Perhaps I need some clarification, then. Here is what I assumed: The Axe-FX II and the AX8 are not class-compliant, while the Axe-FX III is. The USB driver is required for Axe-Edit to communicate with the non class-compliant devices. For non class-compliant devices, Axe-Edit was ported to 64...
  23. S

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

Then what was the point of recompiling Axe-Edit as a 64-bit app, if the USB driver remains 32-bits? It means that everything will stop working (for editing) in a few months (or a year, if I delay the upgrade) without annoying tools like VM or dual boot. I'm disappointed, obviously. The...

    Axe-Edit

I don't see any recent update, are you sure? The version I used for my previous post above is 3.14.5, which was released a while ago. Or are you talking about Ax8-Edit? By the way, another thread on the Axe-FX II subforum made me think about something else: what about the USB driver? Was it...

MacOS Catalina *WARNING* 64-bit Driver Coming Soon!

You're getting me worried. There was a discussion on another thread about the fact that Axe-Edit had been ported to 64 bits so it'd work on Catalina, but no one mentioned the USB driver. If it doesn't work, it'll be for nothing. Is the USB driver downloadable from the Axe-FX III page more...

    Axe-Edit

I'm a bit confused. After LPaulasBestFriend's post I checked again. In fact, Axe-Edit appears in two places in System Information (on Mojave): in "Applications" as a 64 bits app in "Legacy Software" as a 32 bits app Having only seen the second one, I concluded that it was still a 32 bit app...

    Axe-Edit

I let a few months go by, hoping that the problem would be resolved in the meantime, and now that I'm checking again, I'm worried about this. Set up a EV-1 with the MFC-101

Hello, I'm new to this sort of setup, so my apologies if I'm missing something obvious. ;) I have an Axe-FX II XL+ with a MFC-101 (firmware 3.08) and I just bought an EV-1 to be used mostly as a wah. When plugged directly into the Pedal 1 input on the Axe's rear panel, it works perfectly (I...

    Fractal Cab pack recommendations

Hello, Speaking of CP20, do you think that pack would be appropriate to build an "Iron Maiden" preset? I've been wanting to try my hand at building a preset from scratch for a while, and this one shouldn't too complicated to obtain. But I'm not clear on which IR to use.

    Activate reveal on startup?

Hello, Sorry for the delay, I didn't get to it immediately and then I left for the holidays. I did what paranoid suggested, it worked like a charm. Thanks again. :)
  35. S

    Activate reveal on startup?

If I remember correctly, I tried to map 500->000 and 000->500 (the manual doesn't say in which direction the mapping is made). Obviously my custom preset is number 500. None of those attempts changed anything, 000 kept loading the factory preset and my custom preset was always at 500. If the...

    Activate reveal on startup?

Thanks for the answers. I'll try the paranoid's suggestion tomorrow. Shenks, I tried playing with the "Preset Transmit Map" setting, the MFC manual is very unclear about how it works precisely, but none of my attempts made any difference. And I'd like to keep the factory presets where they are...

    Activate reveal on startup?

Hello, There is one little annoyance with the MFC (mark III) that I'd like to solve... I change scenes far more often than I change presets, but my presets are number 500 and above. So if I accidentally push the button to switch scene and forgot to activate Reveal, I end up on a low-numbered...

Is it a bad idea to run USB and MFC at the same time?

I'm using the Axe-FX with Axe-Edit and the MFC on at the same time, hours a day, and never met the problem you describe. Since Axe-Edit pauses communication as soon as it receives a signal from the MFC, I'd first look for problems on the USB side: are you sure your cable is good, is there a USB...

Do i need a power conditioner when i play live?

I'm sure that other conditioners do a more thorough job at current regulation, but the PL-Pro (maybe the Plus too, I don't know) does some filtering of the incoming current, which qualifies as regulation. Since unstable/noisy current has a noticeable effect on the lifespan of a device, it's...

Do i need a power conditioner when i play live?

I haven't had opportunities to compare conditioners myself, but I currently have a Furman PL-Pro DMC E, which I'm very happy with: - It does regulate the current. - It isn't a "sacrificial" unit, so in case of a surge, it may survive with probably just a fuse to replace. - It has a generous...

Do i need a power conditioner when i play live?

I'll simply add my voice to what's been said: if your gear is going to be exposed to electrical networks of unknown quality, you really should use a power conditioner that will protect against surges AND provide a stable current. It's not that expensive, compared to having to replace your gear...

    My student rocking Dream Theater

Nice! My teacher made me work that song last year when I bought my 7-string guitar. It was a great exercise for pick control, and also great fun (especially the second part, which is quite crazy and jumps all over the place). Tell your student to keep up the good work. :)

    Has the Axe FX peaked?

In the computer world, I'm usually happy when I see updates to the software I'm using (the boy in me somehow sees them as new toys, silly as it may sound, and I've yet to be seriously bitten in the rear by a rotten update). When it comes to the Axe-FX, it's a bit different. I bought mine just...

    Pedal Power Question

The most crucial parameters to check are polarity, voltage and AC/DC: if they don't exactly match, you will likely fry the device. On the other hand, the current indication on the device is a maximum: in your example, your device in normal use will need up to 50mA. So you need to power it with...

Axe Fx just for home: who else does it?

Guilty as charged. :) My previous gear had been bought without much foresight, just as I was learning more about all that. I was starting to feel its limitations. Buying parts that would remove those limitations (like a MIDI controller that could handle front pedals *and* fx loop pedals)...

your suggestions for additionnal 1u/2u units

It's a bit specific, but I filled the last space in my rack with a line mixer. Since my power amp is also in the rack, it means I can easily add a second sound source (in addition to the Axe) and have everything output from the same speakers.

    Power Conditioners: Snake oil?

It's likely that some of the pros of power conditioners are a bit exagerated, but some of them are real enough, like stabilizing and smoothing the voltage feed or providing a measure of protection against moderate surges. Hello, I just received a MFC mark III and am slowly getting used to it. It's connected to my Axe-FX XL+ with FASLINK and everything is loaded with the latest firmware. Since I usually have Axe-Edit opened on a large screen in front of me when playing at home, I'm a bit disappointed that the...

    Extending my rack

Hello, My Axe-Fx is inside a small rack and I was thinking about adding a power conditioner to it, partly for sheer convenience, partly for protection (but that gear won't be used on stage). If I'm reading the Axe-FX's manual correctly, it won't draw more than 1A, so it should never tax the...

    Happy FRFR day: taming it

Hi, A couple of weeks ago, I got my Axe-FX and used it with the power amp and speaker from my guitar combo amp. Depending on what your amp offers, you could use either a speaker jack or an XLR cable. But AFAIK, an instrument jack is not a good idea.

    The Feel of studio monitors...

I'm a bit late on this thread, sorry I just found it. ;) Is being directional a feature common among studio monitors? It does seem so, and I'm interested in the answer because I want to buy some FRFR speakers for my Axe, but I'd rather have a wider dispersion (like the Matrix Q12 seems to have).

    HFD! (Happy Fractal Day)

Just a short followup. This morning I switched amps and tried the Axe through the return input of my high gain tube amp (Laboga Beast). It sounded much, much nicer: the acoustic Marshall was extremely aggressive and biting in the trebble, and made me think I was chased off by bees, while the...

    Small rack with the Axe-FX

I have the Axe about three meters from me now, it's switched on but I'm not doing anything with it. I can barely hear the fan, it's certainly not a bother. If the 1U version of the Matrix power amp is like that, it should be fine.

Thanks. :) Indeed I need to learn more before I can make enlightened choices. The Motu 828x looks quite nice, but it's another budget entirely! No matter what choice I end up making, I think I'll first buy a power amp and one monitor, only for the Axe-FX, later I can add to this setup in...

    HFD! (Happy Fractal Day)

An Axe-FX II XL+ arrived at my house just in time for the week-end. :) It had probably been shipped a few hours too early to get the Quantum 2.0 firmware, so I upgraded it and then started to wander around the presets. Small rack with the Axe-FX

I'm not a tone zealot, if that's what you mean. ;) Nevertheless, I prefer to worry too much beforehand rather than afterwards. If the mixer only routed sound from the TV, I wouldn't worry too much, since the TV itself probably has a bigger impact anyway. But the mixer would also receive the...

    Small rack with the Axe-FX

Sorry, I tried to avoid unnecessary details, and ended up being unclear. For space constraint reasons, my guitar gear is in the same room as other audio-related electronic devices. Small rack with the Axe-FX

The problem is, the computer is a laptop that is moved around a lot, so I'm looking for a solution that is not dependent on the computer's presence.
