    Rick Beato on string gauge

9-42 - standard, can find them just anywhere. Anyway, this is just one of those 'feel' things where every guitar player is right. After 40+ years of trial and mistakes I do think that sound comes from the combination of fingers and the brain, not strings.

Marshall JCM 900's and 2000's - Why are these never emulated in modelers?

Well, the nice secret is that if if you turn down the second diode clipping preamp in MkII JCM900s you get a JCM800, speaking of the real hardware. So you get a cheap JCM800. Anyway, for emulation, put a Tube screamer in front of the JCM800 and you should be there. JCM900 was the sound of the...

Best audio interface that will work with Mac OS Catalina

FocusRites are solid, their tech support is superb, too. I am not upgrading my Macs to Catalina until some time early next year with their .3 update. No need to do it. As for disk space, I use external drives via my MacBookPro, works just fine with audio recordings. USB 3.0 is fast.
  19. ksandvik

What is the next big modelling nut to crack?

I think emulation, such as III, is now beyond the real thing. Have had enough bad experiences of badly behaving tube amps at gigs. I would not like that to be emulated.

Small Bass Amp for Basement Jamming

  22. ksandvik

Why doesn't Fractal Audio want to make AX8 Mark II model like FX8 Mark II anymore?

If the issue is to nag over and over about more buttons until Fractals gives up, I think it's a futile approach. They look at markets and they are not a big company that could take risks to please a minority that might or might not purchase a tons-of-buttons product. Meanwhile, the volume knob...

New BOSS SY-1000. The Hex-pickup is not dead. Long live the 13-pin plug!

Guitar synths are fun but do not expect them to be used for all keyboard synth parts, maybe pads/strings but the rest is all about keyboard fingering versus guitar fingering. I would also use them for synth bass lines.
  24. ksandvik

Why doesn't Fractal Audio want to make AX8 Mark II model like FX8 Mark II anymore?

There are plenty of external MIDI foot controller systems to make your own monster footcontroller layout system. 25. ksandvik

Why doesn't Fractal Audio want to make AX8 Mark II model like FX8 Mark II anymore?

Frankly speaking, AX8 to FM3 is not a big huge disruption in the music equipment business world. If you really want to talk about big and nasty disruptions, let's for example look at what Roland did by killing their great polyphonic analog synths in the later 1980ies.
  26. ksandvik

Why doesn't Fractal Audio want to make AX8 Mark II model like FX8 Mark II anymore?

I would think FM3 + a small MIDI controller takes about same space. If I don't need MIDI controller FM3 is even smaller than AX8, which is nice. It's just the life of a gigging musician to take equipment to a gig, no big deal.
  27. ksandvik

Why doesn't Fractal Audio want to make AX8 Mark II model like FX8 Mark II anymore?

FM3 + cheap midi controller is fine for me. Even better, some gigs do not need the midi controller.

    Power conditioners?

I recommend power conditioners, cheap insurance to feed good power to expensive gear. For example someone in the house turns on a washing machine, you see lights dim but your equipment in the studio will be protected from that fluctuation.
  35. ksandvik

Would a nearby lightning strike possibly fry my Axe-Fx 3’s USB socket?

Now having a power conditioner is a good thing to have in a studio, let's say for squirrels who chew up incoming electrical wires and cause all kinds of sudden drops and spikes. But for lightning strikes, removing the outlet from the studio equipment is the best way. Now if everything is routed...

  38. ksandvik

    Cheap wireless systems

Line6 G10s work surprisingly well for their price, used it with many gigs as my use of wireless is not constant, just for some shows where I have to run around. Just use real batteries and replace them often, G10 does not like rechargeable batteries, the level is too low for it to properly operate.

  43. ksandvik

Would a nearby lightning strike possibly fry my Axe-Fx 3’s USB socket?

Also, any Fuhrmans or similar power conditioners (unless they are super-expensive) won't help as the lightning spike is so fast so they can't react. This is why I pull out the plug from my studio into the Fuhrman when leaving for a longer vacation.

FX8 delay settings for "bigger" "fuller" guitar sound live

Classic trick are two delays, one with a shorter delay around 70-90ms and another longer one with 300+ ms, do dial to your taste. First delay fattens the sound, the second one spreads it out.

Why was the AX8 not upgraded to Ares?

FYI this week Boss (Roland) upgraded Katana to II, one reason was that they needed more DSP power for new features. That platform is close to three years' old only. Meanwhile I don't care, current Katana Mk I sounds good and I will continue using it for gigs.

If it rattles a lot, then there's some structural damage in the wood frame somewhere, open it up, if big cracks, try to glue those together but that's not guaranteed. Strange that they do not accept 48k, tough business to be in mastering nowadays as Ozone is pretty user-friendly and for most non-critical records or records you don't expect to get more than max $500 -- so you might as well master with Ozone and get decent to good mastering results.
