    Saying hi again

Thanks for the words of encouragement. ;) In my case, there were key events that I can clearly identify as what triggered certain internal demons. Some of it made me question certain aspects of my life. But some of it also directly made me question why I was even playing guitar, and at the same...

Just checking in and saying hi after being away for quite a while. Gonna try to poke around the forum a little more to rekindle the spark. Simple Axe-Fx into guitar cab rig. Suggestions?

A power conditioner isn't absolutely necessary. Just for jamming, a power strip is fine. Although, (devil's advocate heheh) a rack power conditioner is very convenient. Eventually you may want to start adding stuff, and a conditioner is an easy way to allow for it. For foot controllers, it...

    Yngwie at Sweetwater

I got my first dose of this cold shower of reality on Yngwie's Live 85 concert video. At the very end of the the song Anguish and Fear, when he's gyrating against his cabs, the guitar sound doesn't even match what he's playing. He then breaks a string before the very last riff, and tries to...

    FRFR backline

For a while I used one CLR Neo as backline, just for stage fill. It was loud enough, but I didn't need it to be as loud as a 4x12 for our purposes. The sweet spot is definitely wider than a 4x12. But don't expect to feel the same lovely air compression sensation of a 4x12 behind you.

    Mic solution for FRFR

Since the Chameleon isn't coaxial, I would think you'd have to experiment a lot with placement to minimize transient differences between the two drivers. Since you're playing ensemble without booths, placing the mic that far away will result in increased sonic bleed from the other instruments...

I'm a fan of his first five solo albums, as well as his Alcatrazz stuff. I don't care much for the songs on the Steeler album, but I thought his playing was unbelievable. Kids all over youtube shred like that nowadays, but back then, I had never heard anything like it. I'm still a fan, but I...

What type of monitors are people using for the axe in a home practice situation

Whoa, cool about that Alex Lifeson LP! For home monitoring in the man cave, I use JBL LSR305 nearfield monitors. For loud home monitoring, I use one or two CLRs. For home monitoring with the band, I use headphones, IEMs, or one CLR. If I use headphones or IEMs, it's true that the other guys...

    Yamaha DXR10

The DXR10s are great. Very clear, very loud. They have a slight hump in the 1kHz to 1.6kHz range. For guitar monitoring, it's not a problem. For FOH, notch a little EQ and it's good. I've never touched the D-countour DSP though, I've always left it flat. Setting it to FOH/Main might offset the...

(This is pure speculation on my part) I'm guessing things are going relatively well with the new CLRs. You don't hear THAT much about them, which in a way is a good thing. Best Small Battery-Powered Practice Amp

I have the Blackstar Fly 3 with extension cab. I also bought some as gifts--one for our other guitarist, and the bass version for our bassist. IMHO I'd call it a good-sounding toy. Is it just something different or do cobalt strings sound GREAT?

I had that problem with EBs. I'm lazy about changing strings, so my deadly acid sweat always corroded the G-B-E strings. I always figured that tinny oscillating sound was from harmonic overtones caused by all the corrosion and dead skin on the string, lol. After switching to Elixirs, I never...

    Solving the in-ears puzzle...

If you can't get a feed from the board, I would suggest ambient condenser mics and the Axe FX into a small mixer just for yourself. If you can't hear the drums, put the mics closer to the drums. You'll just have to experiment with the best placement. Cut some HF if the cymbals are too...

    Going wireless worth the switch?

I started with a Nady 101 VHF. It resulted in the funniest gig ever. We had a charity benefit gig for the local Foodbank in the early 90s. The local radio station was there, and the DJ on the street had a wireless mic. They switched over to her, but all they got was an earful of clean power...

would you consider an electronic drum amp for your guitar modeler?

I have no experience with the DA350, so this is purely speculation. It's probably full range, but probably not flat. My guess is that it would be somewhat scooped in the mids. Drums have a lot of lows and highs, not much mids. If they're building the system to specifically monitor drums, I...

Yamaha DXR-10 Line Noise Compared to a K10

If you unplug the TS from the DXR10, is there still a buzz? I ask because if there is still a noise with nothing plugged in, it's probably the DXR10 at fault. If the buzz goes away when you unplug the TS, I'd guess the DXR is amplifying whatever noise is being fed into it upstream (i.e., the...

I tend to agree it's easier to make an awesome preset at bedroom volume. I'm guessing it's because bedroom volume is much more forgiving. However, I don't think live volume is highlighting weaknesses per se, it's just that low volume presets are just not compatible with being played at stage...

I don't have experience with the Alto or Xitone, but the CLR has a DSP switch to select between wedge, backline, and pole-mount positioning. FRFR: I Admit I Prefer It

At the venues that don't have the ability to let you go directly into the mix, is your stage amp the sole source of your sound in the entire venue (i.e., sound guy doesn't mic your cab for FOH)? If so, then agreed, in-ears alone won't do. I don't have experience with the Headrush, but the DXR10...

    In Ears

Bandmates hate em, I love em. I even do band practice with IEMs. Wired sounds better, but the freedom of wireless makes it hard to go back. I keep a wire as backup though. More drivers give you more sonic separation between instruments than do single drivers. Stereo IEM gives you spatial...

Before buying a new monitor, try re-tweaking your presets. If it sounds good in the bedroom, but harsh at band volume, this is a classic symptom of the FM effect. It's just how we humans hear things at different volumes. Try dialing in your presets at stage volume. The CLR is very capable of...
