Turning a traditional guitar cab into a 'flat response' cab via digital EQ

Been playing with this setup for 1.5 years and it's working out great. Tons of compliments on the tone. Not a single compliant from a sound person. Yeah, there's a volume loss. I don't need 400+ watts on stage though, so it just isn't something that matters in the end. YMMV.

    Question about modeling over time

I didn't say this was something I was looking for - I was just wondering if this has ever been part of the thought process. Of course the Axe doesn't change over time. I mean in the real amps modeled. Do components in an amp change in any measurable or perceivable amount after being powered on...

    Question about modeling over time

I was just wondering: Does the firmware in the Axe account for the changes in behavior of a real amp over time due to heat, time powered on, age in years, etc? Is that even a thing that happens in real amps..? Is this something that's been researched by Cliff/Fractal? Just curious, not...

Question regarding PayPal & Cab Packs

Paypal's business practices are somewhat.. less than ethical. There's far, far too much of a risk of the funds being held by them (and possibly never given up) in the event they decided someone is breaking a rule (of which they all change frequently). Small businesses don't mesh well with Paypal.

    Q1.05 vs Q2.00 Friedman HBE

Totally true! I'd just like to know what I'm listening to. There's a fair amount more gain on the 2nd one, and if these are different takes, there's a bunch of reasons why that might be the case - playing harder - recorded weeks apart and the level into the axe was different for some reason, etc...

Tone match export with smoothing issue

Yes - the smoothing was removed from the export at some point. I, for one, would love to have it included. You could try using the 'dephase' on the IR in the cab block - I think it's similar, though not exactly the same, and that's just a guess. Another option is to have the tone match block...

Yes there is - I do this, and I've used the process to make an IR to flatten the cab that I use. I should make a video. What you need is a reference calibration mic. Dayton Audio makes one for $50. Using the tone match block, the basic process is this: - Start with a preset that has nothing...

You should give the manual a good read over end to end - I don't at all say that in a condescending way, I mean that it fills in a *lot* of blanks for those new to this - even stuff that's not 100% about the axe. Really helped me a ton with understanding the context of using the unit :)

This is a great point and something I hadn't considered. It definitely gets worse the more notes I play. Just wondering what everyone's favorite amps are for this purpose. I tend to play a lot of stuff that's not the solid 'power chord' - lots of minor 7 type chords, lots of major 2nds.. just not a lot of the typical root + 5th. Didn't at all get that vibe from your posts - but all right. My mistake then. I think everyone wants you to be able to do what you want to do for sure. A technical explanation has been given a few times, just not by Cliff. That much gain on the input and output = internal coupling.

No offence but I kind of agree.. Perhaps I wouldn't use the word 'unplayable', but you're in total denial that you're pushing the device to it's limits. no, you can't, because they're can't - no guitar speaker can - we're talking 10-20 DB of difference in some areas of the frequency range here. ...it's not even close to the same process... this might be okay for lots of people, but for others it's a deal breaker. i need my patches to sound...

How can you EQ to account for non-FRFR?

Yea, that's the one downfall. Gotta have a special block routed to the output for the cab you're using. It's not a huge deal for me since I needed special routing anyway (I needed a DI out for FOH and in ear monitors, and the 'corrected' out for the cab), but it uses resources for sure.

I don't at all mean to sound argumentative, I totally get what you're saying and agree with you in theory, but that simply doesn't apply here. How can you EQ to account for non-FRFR?

I get what you're saying - that's not the goal though. The goal is something extremely specific that is usually achieved by buying a $700+ 'FRFR' cab. The goal is to come up with something to insert into literally any preset ever that would make a non-flat cab as close to 'flat' as possible.

I've experimented with this quite a bit. I've use the built in tone matching block to do this, and I've had great results.
