High Gain tones sound distant and/or muffled?

Check the various high cut filters. Check high cut in Cab block (if you’re using IRs), the preamp high cut in the preamp page of the amp block. This one is my go-to as a lot of amps have it set low, and it really dulls out the sound (i think I am sensitive to high cuts and I hate a muffled...

The Two notes Captor impedance curve comparison

Interesting, if you saved a picture of the plot I would love to see it, I had assumed it would be two-notes-like as it runs into a tube power amp, but maybe not! GPDI load is interesting, but that thing is incredibly cramped inside so no big surprise. I use mine often running the line-out into...

The Two notes Captor impedance curve comparison

Thanks for measuring. The OX box has a similar curve to the captor, where the Suhr is very similar to the Aiken, and mimics an actual speaker impedence curve. I’ve always been real curious about the Fryette power station but never seen anyone measure it. Randall Aiken has some good articles on...

I exclusively used elixir Nanowebs for like a decade also. Their bass strings sound the same as guitar strings so there was no issue...

Best power amp for a real cab with the Fractal Axe FX III

I have a 2/50/2 as well as an older Matrix solidstate amp and have also used the FX return of other tube amps. The 2/50/2 is great and certainly on the more neutral side for a tube amp. very good punch, but I prefer the matrix with the axe FX. Just less fiddly to get a good sound. With the...

Matrix vs. FX return of tube amp

Toggle power amp modeling on and off with your favorite patch to see how big of a difference a tube power amp makes to the sound. The amount of coloration depends upon the tube power amp you’re using. Something flat and solidstate like a Matrix will always be more neutral and less coloured than...

    How many power-on’s?

I looked at mouser at a few random rocker switches and most show estimated lifespan of 10,000 cycles. If a cycle is switch ‘on’ and then ‘off’, and you turned it on and off once per day, it should be fine for 27 years. Plus a switch like that is easy to replace so I really wouldn’t worry about...

These days for the axe FX I think something flat response is best. I have a 2/50/2 which I originally used with my axe FX II, and while it’s on the neutral side when it comes to tube amps, it’s still a tube amp and still influences the tone. It can sound great but also can be fiddly to set up...

Good idea to turn on the power amp modelling on the Tube Pre. Turn the supply sag up from 0. Then set the speaker page curve, as from memory I think it’s just set flat in the tube pre. You can just copy this, and other advanced settings, off some other amp model. It won’t be the same as that...

Matrix vs Mosvalve for preamp rig (not Axe-Fx)

I haven’t tried a mosvalve before but my understanding is that the output does follow the impedance curve of the speakers and therefore is meant to sound more like a tube amp than a standard flat-response power amp like the matrix. I have an older matrix power amp and it sounds very flat. This...

    Curiosity on durability

Had my II since 2014, all I can think of is that the edit button has got stuck maybe two or three times (not surprising given I edit from the front screen most of the time so it’s probably the most used button), and the markings on the on/off switch have worn off slightly.

    Cables?

If you learn to solder and take your time you can make your own and save a lot of money. It just costs you time. I buy bulk low-capacitance cable and good quality tips and make my own. Metal guys, PAmp+Cab/FRFR? Either/or, or something that's skull crushing heavy!!

I’ve been using a fryette 2/50/2 with my Axe FX for some time, but just recently got an old Matrix M400 mosfet solidstate poweramp. After setting patches up specifically for it (flat response vs tube) it sounds really good. I haven’t compared it to the 2/50/2 yet. I’m using a Zilla 2x12 with...

    Old Matrix power amps

Okay I did it. For the sake of mild entertainment and since I have this 6 space rack with 4 empty units, I bought this on eBay for the grand total of £25 shipped. Matrix M400. I can’t find any info on it online, so no idea how old it is, if it’s 400 Watts per side or in total, etc. I’m...
