[not possible] Okay, I'll say it... a second Amp block!

Last year I wrote this post on TGF, might be interesting for you to read... https://thegearforum.com/threads/modelers-and-aliasing.1815/post-59756 So the real question (which I don't really care about) is: why doesn't fractal allow 4 amp blocks on the axe fx at fm3/fm9 quality? 😬
  2. DLC86

    FM3 Firmware Version 8.00 beta 1

That's funny how subjective things are, the SLO is one amp I've never bonded with, but last night I spent an hour playing with it and really digging it for the first time since I have a Fractal device.

  4. DLC86

    FM3 Firmware Version 8.00 beta 1

I think that's a bug, that setting shouldn't create any feedback loop cuz it should copy the output only when there's no Out 2 block on the grid.
  5. DLC86

    FM3 Firmware Version 6.01

Ok, so you're telling us that in your A/B tests you were able to spot or measure something that took 1 year and 3 months for Fractal to be able to measure that same thing? And they needed to invent some novel measurement techniques to do so while you spotted those differences with some undefined...

  11. DLC86

    FM9 Firmware Version 7.00 public beta (1)

It's pretty much the same difference I hear on other amps, with different amounts: more controlled/tighter low frequencies, less fizz and more pleasant harmonics. I also took a look at the frequency response and most amps show a difference similar to this: PS: obviously the frquency response...
  12. DLC86

    FM9 Firmware Version 7.00 public beta (1)

Yep, and it's one of those where I hear most differences... but by listening back to the recordings I made for the A/B comparison video I'm preparing (probably I'll publish it this evening), the differences don't seem that huge as when I play, so it's mostly a "feel" difference and for the better
  13. DLC86

    FM9 Firmware Version 7.00 public beta (1)

For most amps I've tried it's definitely a subtle difference and nothing to worry about, but ymmv of course
  14. DLC86

    FM9 Firmware Version 7.00 public beta (1)

Update: I decided to momentarily revert back to FW 6.00 and I'm definitely not crazy, the improvement is definitely hearable, on most amps it's subtle but there are a few which stand out like the aforementioned hiwatt, the vh4, the ac-20, some fenders, and probably more. Video comparison coming soon
  15. DLC86

    FM9 Firmware Version 7.00 public beta (1)

First impressions: I went thru a bunch of my presets and didn't notice much difference, maybe a a bit more controlled lows and sweeter highs but it seems a subtle difference... then I landed on one of my pink floyd/hiwatt presets and... oh my, the big muff in front of it now literally sings...

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Release

Sure, I wrote that just to make people aware. Btw, it also changes based on the block, for example reverb and multitap delay have a mix law that reduces the volume by 3dB when mix is at 50%, plex delay and pitch reduce it by 6dB and normal delay block doesn't reduce it at all so, for this last...

You could do that by using the input gain. Anyway I like the idea cuz it would make the global mix setting more useful. EDIT: and just saw Cliff already impelemented it, great!

Plexi amp on max - is this normal?

A level higher than what the meter can display? A level that would cause clipping if connected directly to an output? PS: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/meters-basically-useless-without-peak-db-readout.161912/post-1939615
  42. DLC86

Plexi amp on max - is this normal?

Afaik there can't really be clipping within a block since everything runs at 32 or 64 bit floating-point, the only place where clipping could happen is at the inputs and outputs. Obviously if the level of a block is too high it could affect in a negative way how some following blocks behave though

Very interesting video, didn't know that orientation could make a difference on non-electrolytic caps. Btw, there's probably no need to use an oscilloscope to do this, since he's basically just checking levels he could have done the same thing with a simple VU meter.

Why do some IR's and DynaCab's seem to compress more than others?

That's totally true, but they're still linear. And I have some news for you: EQs have a time component as well, every type of EQ filters is created by applying group delay, i.e. some amount of delay to a band of frequencies which is what's causing the phase shift that alters the frequency...

I used the headphone output of the Axe FX and the impedance curve is properly measured, just pay attention to not set the output knob too high or you'll get distortion. Btw, using a headphone out to drive a cab produces more volume than you'd expect. During my first tests I also realized the...
