Anyone have a 'pet' stock cab?

F119 is the best starting point for transparent crunch or edge-of-breakup tones for me.

What is the better method for tweaking patches, in your opinion?

A couple of my "secret weapons" in tweaking, which I apply almost every time for a more open sounding amp: - Setting XFormer Match (Amp Block / Speaker Tab) to 0.9 for a more open ring - Cutting -1dB at 500 Hz on the 8 Band Var Q (Amp Block / GEQ Tab) for a less boxy sound in the mix - Low Cut...

I've gone the keyboard amp route too before. Not always ideal, but definitely workable.

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 7.00 Firmware Release

Arrrrgh... Finishing up tracking 2 "important" instrumentals, so I have to stay on Q7.2beta for a few more days. I can't tell you how many times my fingers were on FractalBot, but my conscience whispers: "Don't you dare..." I can wait a few more days... I can wait a few more days... I can wait...

AFX spotted in Billy Sheehans Home Studio

Interesting discussion... :) I used to own both Johnson Millenium and Line6 Vetta, then POD X3 Live. HarrySound is right about the fact that : Now they can't even hold a candle to FAS gear, but the "modeling mindset" was more or less born with the POD, although not truly the first piece of...

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 7.00 Public Beta #2

First impressions on Beta2: "Knock" - Cliff you weren't kidding... I already noticed a significant difference in 7.0 Beta, how it was easier to dial in the right amount of "knock" in the low end, without going muddy. In Beta 2 that "knock" is even more defined, but I also hear a greater...

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 7.00 Public Beta

So, to my ears Q7.00Beta sounds and feels so right, that I decided to track a "very important" guitar instrumental with it. My rational side keeps cautioning me to just wait for the full release, but my gut keeps telling me to just run with it. I'm using the Fox ODS for my main lead tone. Soooo...

So how do the new Drives sound?

I also prefer amp drive for primary character vs. super clean amp with heavy drive. In that context the FAS Boost is tremendously transparent. You can use it as an additional gain stage and bump up the gain of your original amp tone. Another nice combo for me has been Two Stone J35 1 Amp with...

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 2.00 Firmware Release

On a different note: I was reorganizing some of my old patches and came across about a dozen presets, which I created last summer. I was stunned how amazing they sounded with Q2! Axe-Fx II "Quantum" 2.00 Public Beta Numero Tres

2.03 is amazing! I've been very pleased with every update since Quantum, but there's something special about this one! There's a tad more definition and inherent clarity in the models, and tones seem to translate much easier to different monitoring situations. Lovely!

    AFX Quantum vs. Tubes

My last tube rig was built around a Mark V, and I loved the tones that I got out of it, but quite frankly - like with any tube amp - there were places I had to avoid tonally. With the Axe FX, I could tweak the character of my tones to be much more flexible and have WAAAY less tonal "avoid...

    Red Bear Picks?

Red Bears are da bomb! I've been playing them for 4 years now. They average about a year for me, and I used to need a new pick every 2 days or so. Can someone un fuck my preset? V2.0 QUANTUM FUCKUP

Tfodor, to get back to your original issue (aside from the linguistic discussion...), I think you're over-complicating your hi-gain tone approach. Maybe try something a bit more raw and natural, without clogging up your signal chain. Just fire up an amp block with a Friedman or Mesa model, add...

Do you create presets tailored for each guitar you own?

Live, I tend to run with a core of 5 presets that cover a lot of ground for me. I choose which guitar I play based on the song, but also based on where the song sits in the set, so that it's not a constant guitar juggle. Part of the fun of performing live for me is playing a song on the "wrong"...

    Firmware updates...blessing or curse?

Updates are a BLESSING, no doubt! I love the multiple and quite opposite approaches mentioned in this thread. Some basically use the Axe-FX as a traditional rig. Plug in, turn some knobs and rock out - without ever saving anything. Others create spreadsheets and screen captures to reference and...

    Quantum final release estimation date?

I've been able to use all features, except it's not showing any of the new beta parameters (DePhase, etc.), but you can still access those via front panel. Other than that it runs fine. I made the mistake of loading a bunch of new IRs, and since the beta's cab numbering doesn't line up with...

    Quantum final release estimation date?

Go for Quantum! Other than the above mentioned Cab numbering issue & Axe Edit not showing the new parameters, it's been rock solid for me too. I created brand new presets & also tweaked existing ones, and had zero problems performing with them. Your time would be much better spent putting time...

    Glenn Fricker's Opinion.

A point to be made is that it should always be more about musicianship than your gear. I think that crappy gear can certainly be a hindrance in certain situations, but so can high-end professional gear. I know plenty of musicians who are always spinning their wheels with finding the latest...

Low watt tube power amp for breakup/warmth?

Welcome to the world of Fractal, Alphalfa! To address your main point of how the Axe-FX sits in a mix / how well it works in the studio: I'm a producer. So I purchased Cab Pack 16 today. I've only had a limited amount of time to audition a few of the Ace cabs, but my goodness... Wonderful work, Mikko! A gorgeous blooming sustain and rich overtones characterize each of the IRs to varying degrees. Naturally some are more thick sounding than...

I'm concerned that updates are getting a bit out of control

When people ask about what on earth the source of my killer tone is, one of the first things that I tell them is: #1: This is not your typical digital product that can clone "snapshots of an amp's behavior". It feels and behaves like a real tube amp with all of the nuanced dynamics, and "in...

    Tone Chasing (help)

Personally, I always reach for AC20Mix in the Cab block for chimey, open tones. It has worked for a variety of amps to create chimey 3D tones, like the one in the video.

Feels like I got together with an old girlfriend.

Great playing, great feel Ryan! With your style and touch, definitely check out the TwoRock model on a medium gain setting. It cleans up with your volume knob like a dream, then cries with these amazingly bell-like overtones when you run it wide open. I usually run that amp through a not overly...

Pit gig in ears, no monitor, lead sounds

I play almost exclusively with In Ears too. At first I was creating my patches through FRFR, then tried to tweak my IEM to match that. I was struggling live BIG TIME. When I switched my approach and created the tones with the exact IEM signal chain, then tweaked my other setup to match it...

    Hostility on Kemper Forum

So many of you had said it one way or another, and I completely agree, that most people who are quick to argue about gear are usually the ones who are trying to compensate for something. Frustration in one's self leads to negativity, while creativity leads to productivity. The funny thing is...

The stoneage problem: drums too loud

I agree whole-heartedly! For the past 8 years or so 90% of my rehearsals and shows have been with IEMs. It took a little while to get comfortable with it, but it tightens things up so much in the band's sound.

Axe-Fx II Firmware 20.00 Public Beta

Absolutely loving 20Beta!! I tend to go for tones that translate to multiple pickups, respond well to volume roll-back and have a clear, but gutsy quality. This usually meant fairly deep editing for me, in order to accommodate a variety of playing styles. With FW20, I really didn't have to go...

    question about blending two amps

Gabsonuro, Your easiest solution for adjusting the balance of the 2 amps is by changing the Output Level parameter in the amp block (NOT Master Volume!). As far as panning goes, it really depends on how you're using the sound (the musical context that you're trying to fit it in), but in...
