    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

It’s not my monitoring system. I’m listening to everything (music, work, YouTube, axe fx), all through my studio monitors, in my acoustically treated studio, and everything sounds great. I will upload some comparison clips today, right now I’m backing up my axe again to try a couple more things.

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

Ok so this is an update to my previous reply to this message. I've looked into more videos that showcase stock presets or patches with default amp/cab settings. I found a few good videos, each with a different firmware, varying from v15 non-quantum, to quantum 5. Even FW15 sounded miles ahead of...

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

Thank you for trying to help. Sorry if my original post wasn’t clear, I do manage good tones, but like I said, it’s either by using tone match, or by having to use a lot of the cab features I’ve mentioned. Which seems odd to me, hence I started this thread. Thank you for the explanation, but I’m...

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

I'm on the XL+ (not the III), so I have "only" 189 factory ones. And I say "only" because I think that should be enough. Anyway, I do "find it" when I tone match, I get great tones which I've used for a few years now and over dozens of songs, both my own and others'.

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

Real is not a word to describe sound? Do you wanna search this forum for the phrase “sounds like a real amp”? Have you ever used virtual instruments? Some of them sound more real, while others sound more fake. It is most definitely a word to describe sound, specifically to describe when...

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

Alright this sounds way better than the stock cabs and doesn't seem to be fizzy like other 3rd party cabs I've tried! Like I said, I don't have any access to recordings since I can't access the studio I work at. And in my home studio I'm not using a real amp for years now, don't even own one...
  7. B

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

I’m not taking about matching a specific sound, that’s very easy to do with the tone match block or even 3rd party EQ match and IR makers. I’m talking about creating a tone from scratch, without having to rely on tone matching. I’ll try to explain myself better. I’m not talking about good/bad...

I’ll check them out tomorrow. Like I said, all my settings are correct, so: 1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Yes (obviously) 4. No 5. Yes

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

Studio monitors. (just for the record, same deal with headphones as well) I’ve tried some 3rd party cabs, though not many. They’re usually more on the thin/fizzy sound rather than boomy, but still bad compared to a simple mic on a cab. Same answer as the quote above :)
  10. B

    Stock Cabs Don't Sound Real?

From my experience with my XL+, the stock cabs really don't work for me. They sound nothing like micing a real amp, whether I'm the one micing it, or some random guy on YouTube. The majority of the cabs are very boomy in the low end, muddy or hollow in the midrange, and fizzy on the top end...

Using Far-Field Cab IR's to fake Mid/Side Recording

Cool! Let us know how it works for you. One thing I forgot to mention is that I listen to my Axe through a pair of studio monitors (if that wasn't clear). It should work on headphones too I believe though I haven't tried it.
  12. B

Using Far-Field Cab IR's to fake Mid/Side Recording

Sure thing! I took the stock preset #8 Plexi 50W Treble, stripped it out of everything other than amp/cab, and added the M/S cab thing. I also made a screenshot of the layout and the parameters for each block. Another thing I found is that increasing the L/R delay on the second cab block to...

Using Far-Field Cab IR's to fake Mid/Side Recording

I've messed around with a nice trick to get some width on a dry mono track (say lead guitar for example), without making it sound "roomy" and without changing the tone of your main cab (like adding another cab would). What I did is split the signal from the amp block into 2 cabs. The first one...

Drastic Changes to SV Bass Amp After Update

Yeah I tried turning the drive down, but the difference was too big, it didn't return to the original preset tone. Also, I know it's in the release notes, I just don't know of which version, and I couldn't find a list of all of them. I did notice that SV Bass 2 was clean, but when I did switch...

Is there a way to recreate the Cab Room feature in the Fractal Reverb plugin?

I like the room feature in the Axe cab block, yet sometime I'm not sure if I want to record with it or not, so I'd like to record dry and then be able to add it later (without having to re-amp). So is there a way to create the same reverb in the FAS Reverb plugin? Edit: To be clear, I'm asking...

Why Do I Always Struggle With Cabs?

How do you calibrate your level? I set my Axe to send out around 0db on the VU meter, out1 level is on 50%, hits my interface just right from what I can tell. I don't know any other guy that has an Axe though. I see, I can upload a DI, though I don't have any preset to upload because like I...

Thank you guys for all the responses! There are some things that are obvious which I'll try to make a bit more clear. Why Do I Always Struggle With Cabs?

Yeah I know about low cutting, tried that as well. It might clean the sound a bit but it's still the same sound that I dislike. Why Do I Always Struggle With Cabs?

I can't seem to get good sounds (at least for my ears) from the factory cabs. 99% of the factory cabs (I've tried all of them many times) just give me a very boomy and phasey tone. Not clear, not tight, not punchy, it barely even sounds like a starting point. I feel like I should note that I'm...

    Tuner in Axe-Fx II XL+

I'm looking at the Axe tuner right now, my strings takes about a whole second to settle down (maybe because I use 0.11 on 24.75") And when I'm holding a note for more than a second it's almost always with vibrato so even if I'm slightly flat it might be for the best. But that's just me of course.
  37. B

    Tuner in Axe-Fx II XL+

It depends, if I'm playing mostly fast stuff the strings/pitch won't have time to settle down, so I will always be sharp.

    Tuner in Axe-Fx II XL+

I would not suggest picking with the thumb, you should pick at the same way and force you use when you play. For example, I personally play aggressively, so if I tune according to my thumb, the strings will end up too high when I actually play.

OK so today I tried turning off my PC, while listening to Axe with headphones plugged in directly, and no guitar jack. The noise didn't change in sound or volume. Is My Axe Fx Faulty? (Amp Hiss + Audio Clip Example)

I only have the Axe for a few months, but I've messed around with distorted tones almost exclusively, so I can't really answer your answer with confidence. I do remember having some hiss on a JC 120 patch when I first got the Axe, but I thought it was the brightness of the preset that causes that.
  53. B

Is My Axe Fx Faulty? (Amp Hiss + Audio Clip Example)

I tried it now, even recording DI guitar to interface and reamping through the Axe via USB. Same problem on all options. Yeah it's still there, very audible. I'll have to check that, I'll turn off my PC and try it.

Like I said, it happens on all presets, even stock ones.
  55. B

Is My Axe Fx Faulty? (Amp Hiss + Audio Clip Example)

No these are humbucker pickups in the example (I've tried other ones as well). You're right about the magnetic interference, but that's just the small ringing noise (which goes away when I get farther away from my computer). The problem is the amp hiss, which is there even when nothing is...

Audio problem with USB cable connected

Have you tried a different cable or even a different computer? What happens if the USB is plugged in but the computer is turned off?
  58. B

    Axe-Fx GEQ and PEQ question

Personally I use the GEQ before the amp block to shape the gain structure better or even "change the tone of the pickup". And also inside/after the amp block for general tone shaping. Most of the time I use the PEQ to take out ringing frequencies with a narrow Q.
  59. B

Is My Axe Fx Faulty? (Amp Hiss + Audio Clip Example)

I don't think you paid enough attention. The noise happens while I play, noise gates can't fix that.
  60. B

Is My Axe Fx Faulty? (Amp Hiss + Audio Clip Example)

I have a bad problem of amp hiss. If don't play hard, the amp hiss can be heard THROUGH my playing, WHILE I'm playing. It happens on basically every clean preset, even the stock ones. The amp hiss is there even when I unplug the input cable from the axe, so it's not coming from my guitars. In...

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

How can I like a comment more than once??
  74. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

Yeah it's a wrong term to say "FRFR or studio monitors", but I guess by FRFR they mean a big speaker that isn't labeled "studio monitor".
  75. B

Is it just me or playing with one speaker feels better than playing with two

Yeah obviously reverbs and effects sounds better in stereo, but I'm talking about just dry guitar tone.
  76. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

I feel the same haha! I don't know why everyone starts to explaining everything, I just wanted to ask what type of tone do you guys prefer and how do you tweak the Axe accordingly. I didn't ask what an amp or FRFR is.
  77. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

Yeah but when I say FRFR I mean studio monitors in an acoustically treated studio. Maybe I should have mentioned that!

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

    Yes that's why it's called FRFR ;)

  81. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

I totally agree. Though my original intention was amp in a room sound still via FRFR. I guess my wording was a bit confusing, maybe I should have said "raw amp vs guitar in a mix".
  82. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

Haha of course I owned a real amp. By the way, the original intent of my thread was discussing amp vs studio both in FRFR! Not a cab vs FRFR thread, haha! But since you brought it up, I'm just saying that I believe it can be achieved, since it can be done on many other instruments. And I believe...

  85. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

Of course, I was asking what do you prefer :)
  86. B

Is it just me or playing with one speaker feels better than playing with two

Yea that's where I got the idea to play with just one speaker, and after I tried that I found out that it feels better to me. But just to remind, I'm talking about a mono source, not stereo/2 amps. Mono source through 2 speakers vs 1 speakers.
  87. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IR makers are trying to get a studio/mic'ed up tones. I don't recall seeing an IR claiming to (or captured in a way that) sound like an amp in a room. 88. B

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

What do you think is lacking? The FRFR speakers? Or the cab simulation?
  90. B

Is it just me or playing with one speaker feels better than playing with two

When playing through studio monitors, with a mono sound, playing through 1 speaker feels much better to me than playing through 2, even though it's complete mono and the exact same sound. I'm posting this just to see if I'm the weirdo, or if other people feel the same.

I'm a mixing engineer, sometime I use the fractal reverb plugin in my mixes. But just using the reverb plugin in the mix isn't going to sound the same like the video you mentioned, since there the reverb goes through an amp and a cab.
