Axe-Fx II "Ares" Rev 2.00 Firmware Release

Just when I started to accept that update Q10.01 was the last firmware I’d ever do on my AxeII, Fractal yanks out the rug... Seriously guys, I spent all night updating the amps in all my presets, and retweeking a few things here and there, and even though I haven’t had time to try anything in...

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 10.01 Firmware Release

I'm glad I decided to recorded all my guitars, and bass dry. I know what I'm going to be doing all day tomorrow.

How many patches do you all use?

Overal, were original hard rock, but we like to fuse in a few things like funk, pop, techno or whatever, here and there for a bit of an experimental twist. I'm a patch per song kind of guy, I use scenes, and automation from a daw.

AFIII Axe-Fx III + GetGood Drums Modern & Massive: 1h Song Challenge (Preset)

Thank you, that answered a majority of my questions. If I have any issues when I finally get it (it might be a few months, still trying to get a few other things first) would it be cool to message you?

AFIII Axe-Fx III + GetGood Drums Modern & Massive: 1h Song Challenge (Preset)

How are you liking those drums? I'm really considering getting them. What kind of things can you tweak? We're a bit on the experimental side of hard rock, so our drums tend to be tweaked a little different per song.

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 9.04 Firmware Release

I'll upgrade, eventually. I'd like to see some bugs worked out, and the pedals released first, but it's in my future. I will say, for me, that it's mostly for the hardware, and not the tone. If the 3 sounded the exact same, it would still be worth it, for me, for the I/O upgrade. I do...

Amp in a Room vs Studio Recorded Tones

To the original question... I'm not sure there is a straight forward answer to that question. It really depends upon the goal at the time. I'm not really a bedroom player, so all of my tones are designed for playing with a song I wrote, so i guess it depend upon the song. I just give the...

No more real cabs for me

Haven't used a cab since I first got my Axe2, and I only used an FRFR on stage once. I get plenty of interaction from the front of house, in smaller clubs.

    Axe-Fx III - PDF Manual!

Currently, I send a dry, and a fuzz in parallel to my Axe2 on input 1, unfortunately, this makes the input gate useless, so I have to have extra stuff in my patches. I also use input 2 for my bassist live, which Is why I can't do it that way. I plan on separating my guitar into in1, and in2...

So unless I missed it in the manual...

I have two different polyphonic tuners on my phone, one being the TC. I've even tried the real TC. I always seem to come back to my Peterson iStroboSoft when tuning really matters. Any other time, I just use my Snark.
  14. John Tisdale

    How many simultaneous reamp channels?

I've been trying out all sorts of things to get a good bass tone for my bassist, and I've gotten real close, but just haven't hit the mark. I even tried something like you described here, but just could get it to do what I wanted, probably due to my limited bass tone knowledge. Could I trouble...

Really dont get it ! why the downsize when there is more options.

Well, to add flames to the other side of this argument, I know that many people (I didn't keep exact tallies,) myself included had been wishing, and hoping for a smaller MFC, since it came out. For some of us, the giant pedal is just real estate we don't want, or can't afford, especially if we...

Any FC release time info ?

So, has anyone posted any official dimensions on either FC. The FC-6 looks like exactly what I've needed since I got my II, and I'm hoping they are small. Can't wait to get my hands on a couple of these, and obviously, a couple of III's as well.

    Modeler Stress Test

The only thing I said was that the 2nd one, I guess the right term would be, "saturated" quicker, when I listened on an iPhone. That wasn't really a guess. That could have been happening for any number of reasons. I never actually got around to playing it on a system that would have made me...

    Integration with RJM Mastermind GT?

I use a Roland FC-300 pretty satisfactorily. I got it on sale for $250, long ago. Now days, I use a laptop to automate most everything, but I still use the controller for expression pedals, and basic DAW controls. But when I first bought it, I used it to do everything I needed manually. If I...

Really dont get it ! why the downsize when there is more options.

Here I was, thinking, "Finally! The FC6 is perfect, it's exactly what I was hoping for." Seriously, I automate live, but I still need a controller for expression pedals, and DAW control, so the smaller the better. For me, the 6 IS a step up.

    Modeler Stress Test

Unfortunately, I have only had a chance to listen on my phone, so I'm hessatant to make an assessment of which is which, I will say that on my phone, it sounds like the middle one moves into the full gain push much faster. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, or just a matter of how the device...

    Axe FXII PLUS Axe FXIII

I'll definitely keep my II for the foreseeable future. I see no good reason to sell it. It still functions as it should, and outside of one day needing the internal battery changed out, I expect it to keep doing so for quite some time. It'll also make a great studio toy to have around. Who...

    Compressor graphs?

I'm not sure it's about "what it shows that the other doesn't" but about what his brain can most easily interpret at a glance. I get that. I often see things differently than others too, and what makes sense to other people doesn't always makes sense to me. Especially with math related stuff...

USB Flash possibilities for IR/Patches loading

Nah, that requires me to remember to keep my phone charged. I'd rather just have a flash drive, no battery needed. I think people rely way to much on their phones for things these days.
  28. John Tisdale

USB Flash possibilities for IR/Patches loading

This could literally be a gig saver, for those that don't bring along a laptop. I'm very glad I do take a laptop with my band, but if I were ever to sit in with a friends band, where I don't have my laptop, and some unfortunate incident ate a patch, or bank, or whatever, this could be the...

  30. John Tisdale

    Will presets be backwards compatible?

No, that's incorrect. Backwards compatable means the old tech, or software works with the new tech, or software by design of the new product. - In other words, the III is specifically designed with the idea in mind that the II patches will be able to work on the III, in some way, either...

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

Well, I'm not gonna continue to argue with you, it's very clear to me your reading far more into Cliffs response than you should. If you feel so strongly about it, you can keep living the dream, but my experince tells me otherwise. Also, my analogy was not "false" it was intentionally broad...
  32. John Tisdale

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

You missed my point, it's really not a specific detail, it's a non-point. It's like calling your boss to tell tell him you thought you were going to be late, but you got it sorted out, and now you're pretty sure you're going to be on time. Why even bother to call? I've dealt with enough PR to...
  33. John Tisdale

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

I agree, and I'm not knocking Fractal, I'm just stating that they are giving a typical PR type answer, and honestly I don't think that's a bad thing.
  34. John Tisdale

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

Actually, it's quite the opposite, if it was sorted out, why even mention that there ever was a shortage to begin with. It's all about PR. He can't really say anything definitive, because he doesn't know, and no one can know. It's risky business for a company to even speculate for their...
  35. John Tisdale

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

Sure, with about the best generic non-answer a manufacturer could give. "We're doing our best." He didn't answer anything, he basically just said "maybe." I've dealt with manufacturing companies, and there's never a definitive answer, even with there isn't a fab shortage.
  36. John Tisdale

Is FAS prepared for high demand at launch?

Me too! As to the topic at hand, I'll never understand the motivation behind asking questions that you know won't get an answer. It's almost like asking my wife if I can have money. She'll either look at me like I'm stupid, or it'll start an argument that won't end for months, so I just don't...

AFIII A little taste of the new Tri-Chorus clean.

I don't think it's "based" on anything. I think it's more of a bonus, because in the Axe-FX you can use two chorus blocks in parallel, or series with the tri-chorus in each block.

    Audio interface for IOS device

Those cost about the same as an iPad, but I've been looking around at the tablet options, and it seems, if you want to run something like Ableton, you're not really gonna get much cheaper. So far, a stripped down MacBook, specifically for live shows, seem like it's still the best option, for me.
  42. John Tisdale

    Audio interface for IOS device

Honestly, I'm fine with any tablet. In fact, it's probably better that it's not an iPad, cause there are far cheaper options, that are easier to replace, and if you are traveling with it, and it's on stage, it's gonna get abused. Which is one reason I even thought about this in the first...

Do we have Global EQ presets on the III?

It would be neat, for those that need it, to have a bank of global output EQ's so when you get to a venue you've played before, you can just pull up the EQ you made the last time you were there. 3rd gig at the Houston House of Blues? Head over to the global EQ, pick the output going to the...

    Audio interface for IOS device

I personally wouldn't need any of those things, we really don't change anything live. We work out any of those bugs at rehearsal, so if we used an iPad, it would mainly be for the stage. I'd use a laptop, (or a desktop) at rehearsal if we were still making adjustments. The only reason we...

    Audio interface for IOS device

I used an old iPhone 3 for backing tracks for a couple of years, the only downside being everything was in mono, never had one hiccup, outside of user error, (actually, since switching to a laptop, ive had far more issues,) so I'm pretty sure a modern iPad could easily add on automation, and...
  46. John Tisdale

    Audio interface for IOS device

That's weird, the OSX version does, or at least it used to, cause I used to use it. I use Reaper now, and intend on getting Ableton Live, eventually. Someone really needs to get on it at Ableton and get a full featured IOS version of live out there. I'd much rather use a tablet than a laptop.

    Auto-Match cab to amp?

I went through and found two cabs that I liked that worked with anything, and I use them on all of my patches, in stereo. I also have a couple of special cases, where I needed 212s, so I also have a couple of 212's in the "Y" of the cab block, as well. The thing is, I basically did the same...

Live stream. Last year, my band did a hack to Facebook live through my iPhone, (and a mountain of other devices, because Facebook live was setup by idiots) and had a live event, where we introduced a new song, because, at the time, it only worked on iPhone. It would have been way easier if my...

Axe II vs Axe III... DIFFERENCE now vs Difference in 6 months from now??

I first have to say that I doubt anyone here was "offended" by your question. It's just that your question is completely impossible to answer. Not one person alive, including the entire engineering team at Fractal, and Cliff himself is capable of giving you a satisfactory response. Mostly...

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I've kept my amp eqs the same since the amps I currently use were added. Same presence, and depth too. In fact, I'm not sure I've changed any settings in my amp blocks main page in over 3 years, even after updates, I put everything right back where it was before. Really, the only thing I have...
  54. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

My definition of crucial, and another persons definition of crucial may not be the same. For one, I find the main amp eq to be the least crucial knobs in a patch, and yet, they are the most common selected by effect designers to expose. Also, I find the reliance on phones to do everything...

7th reaction, it's about time they made a controller that fits my needs.
  57. John Tisdale

Screen brightness and can you turn it off?

Ha! The Axe-FX III will be fine. I would bet that my phone screen is on more hours a day than John Petrucci's Axe-FX is on in a week. I'm also 100% sure Fractal took the time to research and pick a high quality screen that will last.

    Presenting... The Axe-Fx III

Ah, I wish I had 4 drives, I don't have an XL. That's part of the reason I'm glad the III came with it did, I was already looking to upgrade to an XL within the year. I have a patch where I'd love to have access to three seamless amp changes, but I currently have the same issue as you. I had...

future versions? (I.E. axe fx iii xl+)

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting replacing the current knobs and buttons with a touch screen. I meant it more as an optional, supplemental extra. I know it's not something anyone needs, but I figured it could be useful, if the right screen was found to do the job before the next...

I'm still more leaning toward the idea of adding an Ethernet port, so if I choose wireless, I can "pick my own poison."
  64. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I think the problem I have with this conversation is some people are suggesting the best way to improve the AxeIII is to drop something I see as a major feature that basically sells me the AxeIII in favor of something I know I would never use outside of novelty. Sure, wireless is cool. But...
  65. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Sorry, that's just not appealing to me at all. I don't want to be required to connect an extra device to my equipment to make it do what it should be able to do natively. It's sort of a neat idea for a novelty, but I don't want to have to rely on it.
  66. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I don't think my idea of a minor tweak is the same as yours. Also, why take the time to connect my phone, (which I would never use in the first place) when there's a screen already there with everything I'd need. It seems like an extra and unecessary step.

Bug? Invalid Midi Messages to external MIDI destinations from MDC101 thru Axe II.

I'm also really hoping this is something they've fixed, intentionally or not, in the AxeIII.
  68. John Tisdale

Bug? Invalid Midi Messages to external MIDI destinations from MDC101 thru Axe II.

Yup. This is one of he first things I had a problem with when I first got my Axe-FX II, back in early 2014, and it seems like they either can't fix it, or have forgotten it's an issue.

    SOOOOOOOON!!!!!!
  71. John Tisdale

future versions? (I.E. axe fx iii xl+)

True, but they are pretty damn indestructible. Either way, I'd like to see how those "other" touch screen effects units out there are doing, and if such extreme measures are even warranted for a touch screen..
  72. John Tisdale

future versions? (I.E. axe fx iii xl+)

You've obviously never seen the touch screens I've seen. I've seen them designed to be use on oil rigs, covered in oil, and sea water. Plus I saw them priced pretty reasonably in bulk, even a decade ago. My family used to be in environmental control.
  73. John Tisdale

future versions? (I.E. axe fx iii xl+)

I'd love to see the UI screen updated to a touch screen. That could be handy. Maybe even make it so you can hold a button combo to turn it on, and off, for when you've got people you don't trust hanging around.
  74. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

So, 4 sets, of 4 scene controllers for each scene. I haven't used scene controllers in a while, so I'm confused as hell. It was one of those "great idea, but kinda missed the mark" things for me. But I'm always open to revisiting revised features.

Bug? Invalid Midi Messages to external MIDI destinations from MDC101 thru Axe II.

I'm not sure of all the details, but I got the impression it has to do with how mac deals with MIDI over USB.
  77. John Tisdale

    Mac, and MIDI over USB

I just hope they have fixed the issue I had with MIDI over USB in the Axe-II, where my Macbook could tell my Axe what to do, (for automation) and Axe-Edit worked just fine, but I couldn't get my MIDI pedal, to send usable MIDI to my Macbook through the Axe, so I could assign pause/play buttons...

Bug? Invalid Midi Messages to external MIDI destinations from MDC101 thru Axe II.

I just now checked my setup, and yes, I'm still having to use a physical MIDI cable to transmit signals TO my Macbook. USB works fine when automating/communicating with the Axe-FX, but I can't use a MIDI pedal through the Axe-FX to send messages to my Mac/DAW over USB. I have to use an actual...

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

The more I read about this thing, the more I want one, or two. I think I could solve at least a half dozen problems I keep running into with this one box. And not just with music equipment. Thanks for showing me this thing.
  81. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I do have to say, though, if we ever decided to split everything up, those do open up a lot of interesting options. At the moment, it's far more convienent for us just to keep our entire setup in a single rack case.
  82. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Honestly, I just picked the first one I found in a quick search. It's not something I'll personally need.
  83. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I had quite the opposite experience. When I got my II, the Axe USB wouldn't work with my Mac. I've been go through the MIDI on the Axe, and using my computer IO MIDI in, and out. Axe-Edit, and audio worked fine through USB, but I had to control live automation with the MIDI. I'm still not...
  84. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

The examples you've sited here are all for reducing wires run across a stage, which is a huge issue. To me it seems people are wanting the Axe to have built in wireless to solve problems that already have far more practical solutions.
  85. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iConnMIDI4L That, and a wireless router, and you've got a solution for both USB, and MIDI wireless.
  86. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I still don't understand why everyone is so eager to stick a transmitter into the box? To me that sounds like a recipe for something "kludgy". And with wireless protocols changing every year, you're not really very future proofed, at all. I'd rather have an external Ethernet to MIDI...
  87. John Tisdale

AxeFX III and « profiler » block....?

Then, as someone else stated, it must be that Fractal doesn't see it as the best path.
  88. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

But we're not. It's still MIDI. You can wrap up however you want, it's still the same protocol, you're just sending through a wireless router.
  89. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Well, even if there was built in bluetooth, you'd still have to do that. I can't even go upstairs with my bluetooth headphones while leaving my phone down stairs. Bluetooth just doesn't have that kind of range. Have you ever used a tube amp live?
  90. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Are you suggesting that everyone is suddenly converting to a single protocol, so that all devices can easily be controlled at one unified point using universal commands? That has nothing to do with wireless, or the future, it's called MIDI, and the Axe-FX is fully compliant, so are most...
  91. John Tisdale

AxeFX III and « profiler » block....?

As someone who's dealt with that. You don't actually have to infringe to be sued for infringement. There just have to be concerns that you MIGHT have infringed. They don't actually have to prove their case until you're already standing behind the defendants table.
  92. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

It probably is faster, maybe even much faster, but in a planned automation situation, where you've tested the changes, it's something that can easily be compensated for by making your changes a bit earlier, so it's not exactly a deal breaker for that situation. As for Axe-Edit, for my needs...
  93. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Honestly, I can't think of much outside of a MIDI Patch, or a CC command that you'd need to send to an Axe-FX in a live situation. So basically, in the end, built in our not, it's going to be MIDI over wireless Ethernet. That is, if you must have a wireless situation to control you Axe-FX...
  94. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Not to mention the fact that those systems could easily integrate the Axe-FX III as is, without Bluetooth, or Ethernet built in.
  95. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I think you may have missed the early 2000's, PODs were quite an annoying staple in many of the big studios in Houston, Austin, and Dallas. It was very much considered a "professional recording standard." I know, because I was there, and engineers often tried to push that crap on me. Also...
  96. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

I'm just waiting on the wireless gig. I don't even have to show up, I just connect my phone to the club via bluetooth, and the I can control the entire show from my sofa at home. I jest.
  97. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

LOL, this is the funniest thing I've read in a while. I remember, when the ULTRA came out, and people pleaded with Cliff for USB, even stating how it was the industry standard, and that he'd get left behind without it. Now, look at this. Tech is such a fickle mistress.
  98. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Outside of using wireless tech to mix on an X32, or other digital mixer, (which actually has the hugely practical upshot of replacing a snake in most situations) I really wonder how much of that wireless stuff is actually being used during the live event, and how much of it could have actually...
  99. John Tisdale

    AxeFX III: What's Missing?

Nah, probably not. It will most likely be obsolete before the decade is out. Someone will inevitably do it better, if they haven't already, and people will be dumping every Bluetooth device for whatever the new tech will be. Or maybe it'll stick around for decades, as the format finds a...
