Di Marzio Full Shred pickup - what do you hear here?

The Duncan Full Shred and Dimarzio Super Distortion are completely different animals. I have both and like both. I've tried both in guitars that had extremely similar specs. The SD has a much more loose low end. I wouldn't call it boomy or muddy at all but it's just not tight like the full...

Di Marzio Full Shred pickup - what do you hear here?

Keith Merrow (the guy demoing the pickup in the video) has a rather unique playing style and choice of tone. The primary components here are Keith and his choice of amp/amp settings/mic/mic placement much more than the pickup. He has several "shootout" videos in which he plays the same thing...

    Just about had it

This. AND the drums. Not sure if it's the case here (can't listen to the clips right now) but the other elements (bass and drums especially) have a massive influence on the perceived tone of the guitars. Didn't realize the extent of this until just recently. I used EZdrummer for a couple...

    Just about had it

Recommending a tube amp is definitely not a good solution. The OP is searching for "his" recorded tone, not a live or "amp in the room" tone. Trying to get the perfect tone for recording by micing a tube amp is going to be even more complicated and will cause frustration with no end. Despite...

    Metallica GRAMMYs Taylor Swift

Finally got a chance to watch this last night. First impression was that it wasn't really that bad. I didn't really expect anything better given the fact that I really haven't cared for anything Metallica's done in the last 20 years. The overall mix did suck and I'm not a fan of mixing all the...

    Headphone advice...

Another vote for the Grado SR-60 here. Great bang for the buck and sounds great with the Axe. I definitely recommend an open-ear design unless you absolutely need complete isolation. Sounds much more natural and gives a bit more of the "in the room" feeling. No pair of headphones is...

Axe-Fx II Firmware Version 12.04 Public Beta

Finally got a chance to try out the new beta. Brought up my go-to preset and duplicated a recording that I'd done on 12.01. It's a definite improvement, but it's subtle. As usual, many of you are smoking crack with your gross exaggerations. The tone is fairly similar but sounds fuller (I suppose...

AXE 2 vs Kemper good balanced review

Totally agree. Anybody who wants to hear recordings of the Axe or the Kemper has plenty of options to choose from (this forum, Youtube, Soundcloud, Kemper forum, Andy Sneap forum, etc.) The tone + the feel is something you simply have to experience first hand with your own gear before you can...

Interesting. Looking forward to trying this beta out tonight. Have to admit, though, I'm skeptical. Usually with every FW release I see tons of people saying "huge improvement" or "big difference" then I try it and find the differences subtle at best. For those that have tried it, are you...

Lamb of God - Laid to Rest cover with the 6505+

Awesome as usual Kostein! Good job! That's not an easy song to record (I've done it too). Difficult to play really tight and really clean so that both guitar tracks gel together. I like how you basically did your own thing in terms of the tone and the mix. When I covered that song I tried...

Gave Messiah IR pack another shot, and it's a win !

I'll have to try that with the Messiah. I was using that IR a while back and I liked it for solo playing. Tried recording with it once and it seemed way too muddy in the lows and low mids. Required a lot of EQ'ing to fit in my mix. Of course, that was with the 5150 block model. Never tried it...

1:1 - Let`s talk A/B testing actual Amps to their Axe-Fx II Counterparts

I've a/b'd my Peavey 6505 head and Rectifier cab to the Axe model. Ran the Axe through the Peavey power amp. The Axe seemed slightly flatter, more one-dimensional. Difficult to say if this was due to tone or feel. I tried it with power amp sim in the Axe off and on. Greatly preferred it off.

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Sounds like it's already multitracked. Gain level is fine. This kind of music calls for it. Definitely curious to know what cabs you're using or how your tweaking it to get that tone. A lot of post processing? I've never been able to come close to that tone with the Peavey models in the Axe.

    Drive Block

Are you sure it's the drive that's responsible for creating or not clearing up (not sure which) the mud? A lot of the time it boils down to the choice of IR (cab). IMO, most of the factory cabs have too much low end/low mids to be usable for modern high gain tones without serious EQing...

    Questions about live EQ/high pass

I think one thing to note and it seems to be a common misconception is this: Most typical "high pass filters" don't completely block everything below the cutoff frequency, they just greatly reduce the amplitude of everything below it. So, if you high pass at say, 120 hz, there will still be...

    Double vs Quad tracked

I respectfully disagree. No "right" IR is going to be able to compensate for the minute timing differences that arise when there's 4 actual takes on a part vs. 2. Furthermore, most people put some variation between the tracks (slightly different EQ, IR, and/or cab). These timing and sonic...

When I record guitars I always do 4 takes on every part (for rhythm anyways). That way I can experiment with 2-4 tracks to see what sounds best. Lately, it seems that I'm liking 4 tracks. How do I change the input levels when recording? (Reaper)

If you turn up the level in the amp block (NOT master volume) it should increase the signal to Reaper. It does for me in Cubase anyway. Personally, I don't see the point. I don't like recording too hot of a signal when tracking. I prefer leaving headroom in case I apply other inserts to the...

    Is this background hiss normal?

I've noticed it too. The amount varies depending on cab and/or amp used, EQ settings, and gain. More presence/treble = more of this "hiss".

Help on Replacment Bridge Pick Up (For 2002 Basswood Ibanez JEM DBK/Lava)

The problem with pickups is that you can read reviews and descriptions for hours on end but you'll never know if you like a particular pickup until you put it in YOUR guitar. I've put the same pickup in different guitars and loved it in one, hated it in the other. Personally, I really like...

    Tone Frustration

It's basically impossible to get a guitar played all by itself to sound like what you hear on modern metal recordings. These recordings are a mixture of several tracks of guitars, often using different amp, mic, and/or cab combinations, PLUS the bass guitar and kick drum. The mind tends to hear...
