Is there a way of delaying the drive and mod settings on the tape delays?

I love the tape delays in the Axe, especially with the improvements made over the past year or so. Watching this video, at around the 10-minute mark, he's using the Watkins Copycat and the first few repeats sound clean but degrade as the repeats go on. Is there a way of replicating this in the...

SLO. Anybody digging this model? Am I missing the point?

I don't dig the SLO at all. I just can't get it to not sound muddy.

    Gibson's $1,000 humbuckers

Absolutely ridiculous. I have tried all manner of PAFs, and the best sounding ones I have ever used were a set of Irongear 'Blues Engine' pickups. They cost me £60! Just magnets and wire at the end of the day.

Preset for a Gibson Acoustic Guitar

Someone wants us to know they have a Gibson 😉.

Favorite plugins for post production and how do you use them ?

I use Valhalla reverbs as well as Valhalla Delay. Years ago, I bought Echoboy and it is still amazing. I can get all of those delays with the Axe, but the device-specific presets just make it so easy to add and Echoplex or Space Echo.

    Something's coming....

I'd love some sort of preset tie-in with an upcoming Poly Synth FW update, but I think that's asking too much. I'd more than settle with some more Simeon presets, the guy is a genius!

    Amp models that surprised you

The recent Stealth amp models are fantastic. Not sure if the amp modelling process has changed, but it has something ‘extra’. It might just be a preference thing and this just has ‘it’, but it’s great. I am hoping for an FAS Stealth, because I did slightly prefer the first version.
  8. K

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 24.00 Public Beta #1

No. No FAS Stealth, if that's what you are getting at :).

There are some spectacular tones in that video, but nothing I bet we couldn’t get with the Axe.

How to make lower gain Plexi pre set sound full?

Can you not change the tone stack to 'Plexi' or one of the zillion other tweaks that are possible, to achieve this? The tools are in the box :)

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 23.03 Beta #1

    That is stunning. Lovely playing.

Who else never really uses the drive block(s)?

PRS out-Mesa'd Mesa Boogie PRS MT-100

I think it sounds fabulous. Mark's demo wasn't spectacular, but other demos sound better IMO. All 3 channels sound fantastic. Would love this amp in the Axe, but we can probably get there.

    The Power of One Block

Is there a new plate reverb algorithm? I must have missed that, I'd better read the release notes again.

Anyone try using UA Ox Stomp for their cabs?

You hate reverb? I can’t imagine what that is like, I absolutely love it in all forms. I probably love it too much tbh, I over-do it a lot of the time 😬.
  20. K

Anyone try using UA Ox Stomp for their cabs?

The cabs from UA sound no better than anything else IMO. Having said that, their room parameters seem to elevate the sound over what I can achieve with anything else. I would love this kind of stuff in the Axe, especially the ability to EQ the room sound.

Speaker Impedance Curves - A Whole Lotta Magic....

The speaker impedance curve introduction and subsequent improvements were, by far, the biggest ‘feel’ improvement throughout the firmwares up to now. For me, anyway. I remember when Cliff added the ‘Gain Enhancer’ and everyone was raving about it (rightly so). Then the speaker impedance thing...

I hope Cliff is OK, he has been unusually quiet.
  27. K

    Again- what's Cliff doing now?

No less obnoxious than some of the folks here. It’s the same on every forum. I had an interaction on here with someone who said something along the lines of ‘We, as guitar players of taste, have a duty to educate others’. It was the single most cringe-inducing thing I’ve ever read on a gear...
  28. K

    Again- what's Cliff doing now?

I think Kirk is playing the riff too.
  33. K

Do you think Metallica is using Dyna-cab live?

No, it's opinion. I don't think the tones are great either. They are probably made to be palatable, like you say, but they definitely sound less crisp than the album tones. I don't care how expensive their gear is.

How to Install Chop Tones IRs

Also, be aware you may only be able to download the files once or twice. If you lose the files after this, they will likely make you pay for them again. Axe-Fx III Firmware 22.00 Public Beta #5 (Beta 11)

This place is hilarious at times. Amazing new cabs added that should surely allow anyone to coax any guitar sound ever recorded, and people pop up asking if very specific CONES are in the modelled speakers. The new cabs sound amazing.

    Strymon Cloudburst

Thank you. Some of the people on here are very generous with their time.
  40. K

How to emulate 'Ensemble' control from Strymon Cloudburst?

The new Cloudburst pedal sounds incredible. The 'cloud' types in the Axe III are already amazing, but is there a way to emulate the Ensemble mode? It sounds like a swell/pad and follows your playing. Thanks, Dan.
  41. K

    Are Fractal's efforts well directed?

There is no amp tone we cannot accomplish IMO, and we have a great representation of the very best FX on the market. I think the unit is great and am grateful for anything else we get. Buy one of the myriad of other products if they suit you better.
  42. K

Do I need a an Eventide H9 or can it be done with AXE-FX III

It can cover a lot of the sounds in the H9. I have a H9 but don't really use it since getting the Axe III. Eventide stuff sounds amazing, but I don't think there's anything in there that I can't get close to with the Axe.
  43. K

Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 20.03 Release

The Klone is absolutely amazing. I bought a Mosky Silver Horse a while ago to see what the Klon fuss is about, and I was blown away at the effect it had on clean and mild breakup tones. There is something about that circuit. Anyhow, I get the same feeling with this model and the drives in...

  45. K

Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 20.02 Public Beta (Beta 1)

This is the best FW update yet, IMO. The new speaker impedance improvements make a big difference to the feel and sound. I always thought the impedance curves feature was the point at which we crossed into 'this feels like a real amp' territory. Now it feels and sounds phenomenal. Thanks, Cliff...
  46. K

    High pass filter hack idea

Installing a treble bleed is extremely useful if you have high-output pickups. Rolling the volume control back a little cuts the volume and simultaneously has the effect of rolling off some bass content. So to me it's almost like getting more of a 'vintage' tone out of high-output humbuckers...
  47. K

    High pass filter hack idea

I'm sure it does work, but a treble bleed is an incredibly cheap and easy mod to do to your guitar. A resistor (or capacitor and resistor, there are lots of different types) is just soldered between lugs 1 and 2 on the volume pot. It makes most volume pots much more useable, is totally...

Testing IR Full Res - What do you think about this sample?

Great tones, Marco. But I do prefer the second video. It might the the way it is mic'd up, because the amp tone itself doesn't sound much different. The sound of the real amp just seems to be jumping out of the speaker, for want of a better phrase. Nice playing though, and for both gigging and...

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 19.02 Public Beta

That doesn't sound unfriendly at all. Why is it that, because some of you are in IT/Programming, you think your opinions should carry more weight than those of other people? Do you work for FAS? If not, no-one here cares what you do for a living. I think the controls are fine as they are...

Using a lowpass filter instead of an IR solves most of the 'amp in the room' quandry.

I dunno, it doesn't sound like the Redbox and similar methods I've tried (from memory -it was years ago). I will try mixing in a bit of IR character, see how it sounds. But for me, it sounds fantastic.
  55. K

Using a lowpass filter instead of an IR solves most of the 'amp in the room' quandry.

This is a great explanation. Maybe my terminology is not correct, but to me (in the room) it sounds much more like a guitar cab. That is what I'm enjoying. IRs are undoubtedly better for headphones and recording, but this trick is fantastic for just playing into an amp model and noodling.
  56. K

Using a lowpass filter instead of an IR solves most of the 'amp in the room' quandry.

So I watched the @Cooper Carter video on trying to emulate the AITR thing and it has absolutely blown me away. Using a low pass filter instead of an IR makes everything sound much 'closer' and more present. Using a graphic EQ afterwards to shape the tone is very useful as well. I wish I'd...
  57. K

    Fractal Friday with Cooper Carter!

This is the most useful tip I've ever had in all my years of Axe ownership. I can't go back to using IRs for bedroom noodling now. This just sounds better. Going back to IRs introduces a 'boxy' sound I hadn't realised I was used to. This sounds much more 'in-your-face'. Thank you so much...

    Cabinet RW

....or use your ears until it sounds right.
  59. K

    Cabinet RW

No, because different vendors name their own IRs how they see fit. Some may include a nod to the mic used, but it's not compulsory.
  60. K

Speaker Impedance Curve: Why is this in the Amp Block instead of the Cab block?

I think it's in the correct place. Introduction of this feature was also the biggest 'wow' moment for me in all my years of owning digital stuff. It is like the glue that sticks everything together. It affects sound and feel to such a degree that I can't imagine life without it now. Hoping...

Single-Coil Tone from Humbucker with FET Boost

Devin Townsend going over his main preset/GP-100 sound

Yeah, I can see a plugin from NDSP on the cards for DT. I'd love it if FAS brought out some NDSP-type suites to rival (better) the NDSP stuff. They could actually port the presets to the Axe III. Just like NDSP promised with their plugins, but didn't deliver.

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 19.00

    1981 DRV

I love it. I posted a question a while back about getting close to this one, as it is apparently a modified RAT. Cliff snuck a model in the next firmware. Amazing customer service. It does feel different to a RAT, I use it similarly to you. It's awesome.
  68. K

Just ordered an Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul

I absolutely LOVE mine. I agree that the pickups are a bit different, but only in terms of feel. They still feel like active pickups, no matter how much marketing blurb Fishman come up with, though they are better than anything from EMG I have played. But they sound glorious, IMO. I love the...

I've never been a big user of compressors, mostly because I don't really understand how the controls work. I have been creating patches using the new ones. How do you rate Axe-Fx 3 effects vs Eventide and other high end stuff?

I have a H9 and consider the effects to be on par with my III. Trouble is, it can only run one algorithm at once. The FX on the III are absolutely world-class, but so are the Eventide algorithms. It's nice to have both, but tbh I think I could get by without the H9 if I had to. The III can do...

    Joe Bonamassa Fractal or dis?

He's an amazing player, no doubt. But he's always struck me as a bit of a dick. Don't see why people should pay exorbitant prices to see him, just so he can add to his already massive amp and guitar collection. Plus he's just wrong about amp modelling these days. A Marshall/Fender blended...

Axe-Fx Firmware Release Version 17.01 Public Beta

The new shimmer reverb types are outstanding. Best shimmer reverbs I've heard yet. As good as, if not better, than Kemper's 'Ionosphere' reverb. which I used all the time. Thanks for the FullRes IRs for us mk1 users, too. They sound great. Headphones sound even better now!
  79. K

Anyone switched from Kemper to Axe-Fx III?

I too wish the Axe did a shimmer reverb like the Ionosphere on the Kemper. It is probably my favourite reverb, and I have used a ton over the years. The swell into the pitch-shifting is beautiful, it tracks wonderfully and has none of the shrillness of so many others. I think the 'cloud'...

    Dark sounding presets

Use the 'Tilt' EQ in the preamp EQ section of the amp and notch the gain up by 2-3db. That's what I do, it can transform a dark amp to a bright one.

@FractalAudio , don't you have a cat? I can't get anything done when my cat is around, he's a dickhead. Cliff fully deserves a break. I cannot see how the unit can be improved at this stage. It does pretty much everything I need.
  92. K

The tilt EQ in the amp block is amazing!

Seriously, using a tilt EQ in the preamp section of the amp is amazing for tightening things up or warming thin tones up. With the JCM800, I can cut lows and add highs with the tilt EQ, reduce the drive and turn up the MV to get amazing, responsive tones that are not flubby. I love this box...
  93. K

    Volantish

Leon, this preset sounds glorious. Thank you so much. I have a Volante, and this sounds close enough that I don't feel the need to use it all the time for Echorec tones. I might end up selling it if I can get the modulation spot-on and get some drive on the repeats. Really, really good preset.
