Sorry, got tied up mixing and haven't been on here in a while. Yes, a link would be awesome once I can setup my "Downloads" page. 🤘🏼🤘🏼. I'll reach out when that's ready. In the meantime, I'll send out all the Fractal stuff with every email that goes out (regardless of what it is), that way...

GIFT OF TONE 2023 #4 - Chris Baseford

Sorry for the confusion. There was an entirely different thread I was commenting in recently regarding level discrepancies and "unity gain" vs. not, etc. Anyways, I think the fact that there's so much confusion regarding the levels in the the Fractal gear shines a dim light on something that...

    Out 1 block clipping

Oh for sure! I always expect studio gear with level knobs labeled at zero to have a +20 gain boost, status quo! 🤨 "Over and out..." (pppsshhhhh)
  6. cbaseford

    Out 1 block clipping

Thank you for all your clarification on this 🤘🏼🤘🏼 I'm absolutely fine with the way it currently operates and honestly, the only thing the could make this whole issue disappear is for the manual to clarify this. But it seems as though every time this comes up, "this is a unity gain device" is...
  7. cbaseford

    Out 1 block clipping

BINGO!!! 4 out 5 dentists agree that a balanced XLR out of a piece of studio gear will be the same level as the input without any processing applied. If it's not the case, there could easily have been a label notating as such, or the Level in the output block would default to +20 instead (with...

    Nickelback on the III

Just to clarify, that is NOT the "San Quentin" preset. It is their "live" dirty sound that gets used during the shows for anything with a distorted sound.
  10. cbaseford

GIFT OF TONE 2023 #4 - Chris Baseford

yes, might have to move everything over there. I've had so many conversations with a lot of Fractal users that have "written off" AxeChange because it's kinda hard to filter out the... we'll call them: less desirable presets ;). But yes, might make the most sense if things get a bit too...

    Nickelback on the III

Especially live! Most techs (and players) would prefer to streamline everywhere possible in order to limit things from going wrong and also limit the stuff to sift through when things DO go wrong (and they always will at some point). I subscribe to this theory when in dire situations like a...

Good morning everyone :). I just want to say how awesome it is that you're all excited about the presets we've been giving away over the last few months. I plan on continuing to do so while eventually offering a whole pack for sale at some point. As of right now, I'm only able to send out...

I'll send out an email in the next 24 hours with the FM3 presets as well as the initial one I made on the AxeIII. The other cab block did have an option to be used instead of the recto cab for a different flavor, but ultimately these are meant to be tweaked, so feel free to replace / substitute...

    Nickelback on the III

I'll have to go and look to see specifically, but I think so. I also have very rarely had success in the "real world" with Greenbacks especially for higher gain stuff, but again... with zero regard to what the actual IR was from, it was what worked best within the context of the band/PA system/...
  16. cbaseford

    Out 1 block clipping

pretty much any piece of outboard studio equipment (eq, compressor, etc.), especially when in bypass or when not doing any sort of processing. For a specific example of something I'm staring at while typing this ;) Dangerous BAX EQ.

    Out 1 block clipping

Interesting. I’ll try swapping to Output 2. Again, having been accustomed to and XLR line level equipment being truly unity gain, this whole concept of level set at 0, but having a big gain bump is a little strange. Let alone having one set of outputs have it and one doesn’t , without any...

    Nickelback on the III

From what I recall, we left the sound pretty full frequency and let the FOH engineer have control over the filters so he could tweak from venue to venue.
  20. cbaseford

    Nickelback on the III

We tried a lot of different IR's but what seemed to work best in the live scenario was the 1960 Greenback (RW). It was pretty enlightening to hear how the various IR's sounded coming through a giant PA in an arena. Pretty much a completely different ballgame than studio. I'm not sure how...

How Good is the Fractal VH4 Model?

The VH4 is my desert island amp (not modeler ;) I own one, have used 3 others to the point of being VERY familiar with the "real thing". I will say, recalling the same settings on any one of those amps and applying to the other always had discrepancies, sometimes slightly, sometimes drastic...

Studio Flow. How are you using your Fractal Audio gear in your setup?

Thanks for the shoutout :) I'm trying to stay up to date on time-stamping my videos, so hopefully that will help getting to the spot where I go over this. I tend to get long-winded, so these simple topics quickly turn into 3 hour marathons 😂

    Out 1 block clipping

I've asked a bunch of people about this, and being a recording engineer where a signal in and out of any device without any processing should be the same level, it doesn't quite make sense to me. But Fractal insists the way it currently works is correct and it obviously makes sense to them...
  27. cbaseford

    Legacy Vs. Dyna-Cabs

yes, even this minor difference causes the slightest bit of phase discrepancy that is often pleasing (or at least familiar with the recorded tones of the past that we all seem to chase after). 2 capsules can NOT occupy the exact same space and as we know, guitar speakers can sound drastically...

to be completely honest, I have no idea. I would assume there are limitations as you move through the various devices. Maybe someone else can chime in and let us know. Once I know what the limitations are, I can start making new presets in such a way that they're easier to adapt to each...

Thanks for the reply. I tend to agree with your comment about the DynaCab vs. IR. Although I have some IR's that I love, I've always found them to be so confining to 'that' particular sound. Sometimes no matter how much you tweak the amp, the IR just makes everything sound the same. By...

    Wish Cab Alignment Resolution

YES!!! I second this. I do this often and easily in every other IR loader, but for some reason find AxeFX to be less useful for this. It's because of the resolution. Give us a button that lets the resolution get super fine... moving it in samples maybe. Phase flip would be helpful too.

Hmmmm... the levels aren't that drastic on my system. I do record quiet as there's no reason to ever come close to clipping. "Yellow is the new Red" has been my saying for years. I treat "yellow" on the ProTools meter as the loudest I want to ever record.
  46. cbaseford

GIFT OF TONE 2023 #4 - Chris Baseford

Yes, I trim down the DI line going into my ProTools rig so it doesn't clip. I've found leaving the output at unity makes the DI input WAY too hot. Obviously for the GOT preset there we removed the DI only line (on the left/top row), but all the output levels stayed that way. Seems like I...

Wish Naylor Super Drive SD 60

Is there a specific model in the Fractal that can get close to this? Or to rephrase... which existing model will get us the closest? If or when the time comes that you want to model a SD60, I have one you can use whenever you'd like.

Wish Naylor Super Drive SD 60

What amp currently in the III would get closest to this? I agree with the OP that this amp "sounds" unique. I have used the SD60 for 20 years (among hundreds of other amps in the studio) and haven't found something that is a similar substitute. I know nothing about schematics, so it's even...

Hi Mikko. Big fan of your IR's. Have most of them. Quick question for you: if I'm looking for the most accurate, "real thing" version of your cabinets, what is your recommended cab block setting? The default is different then what I see in your videos. Just curious what you've found to be...

Brand New Axe FX II......Hmmmm; not too happy! Help!?!

Sure have... boggles my mind why they stopped at 40, yet filled up the other 350 presets with overly effected, complex, not-quite-so-uesable sounds. There are what, 80 amp models in this thing?? At least have 1 preset for each and go even simpler (less verb, delay, etc.). Like I said, we all...

Brand New Axe FX II......Hmmmm; not too happy! Help!?!

I have to agree with some of the posts here that mention the presets being somewhat under-whelming. "lost notes" in chord voicings on Axe II

I doubt it. It's a ProTools HD system that I've recorded and mixed hundreds of songs on. Because the AxeFx can't do anything other than 48K digitally, I use the XLR outputs patched directly into a Digidesign 192 through a patch bay . I've normalized the audio here so you can here the...
