    [BUG] Can't change amps

Thanks, will do. To answer your question: because life is busy and I don't bother updating every single time one comes out, or even keeping an eye on when they come out. Axe-Edit prompts me to update it whenever I open it, so I just do. Firmware I just update whenever as it's never caused an...

    Axe-Fx Ultra in 2017

Not to say that the new stuff doesn't sound better, but I do think it's worth noting that - to me personally - the biggest improvement between the first and second generations is the feel and pick response.

    low pass filters

There isn't one specific IR. Like I said, it depends. But a huge part of getting the right IR is having a generally balanced EQ curve from the get-go. If my high end is harsh already then I choose a more balanced sounding IR.

    Axe-Fx Ultra in 2017

While I certainly agree that the AX8 is worth it (assuming you don't want to get super into the effects side of things), the Ultra is still a fantastic tool for this day and age. Just because something new comes out doesn't mean the old unit starts sounding bad suddenly. :)
  6. C

    low pass filters

I really depends. I don't like to roll off too much high end, and I don't have to if I've chosen the right IR. A lot of people overcompensate for resonant frequencies in the 2-6kHz range with severe LPF's, but that's a band-aid solution and you lose the nice "air" to the sound. I've gone as...

    [BUG] Can't change amps

When using Axe-Edit (latest version 3.13.2) and trying to edit an amp block, I can't change the amp model I'm using. It won't let me click the dropdown menu, and it doesn't even show the current amp, just a blank box. I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.5

    Unity Gain with Palm Mutes

When mixing, I like adding a limiter that only kicks in on palm mutes. Really smooths them out and keeps a consistent volume without taking away the punch and thickness. A multi-band compressor works too, but I'd rather avoid the phase issues, just in case.

Chatting with Mike Fortin on Facebook

What in the world makes you think AxeFX sales are comparable to sales of JMP style rack preamps? The two being racks doesn't mean anything, they are vastly different devices. It makes zero business sense for Fortin to come out with a rackmount preamp that can't in any way compete with the AxeFX...

What will you do when no more firmware updates?

Wait until the III comes out. If somehow it doesn't, then I'll buy an XL+. But I'm definitely not going through the hassle of selling my II to upgrade to the XL just for a couple extra firmware updates. I'm either without one for a few months (no can do with my studio work), or I buy an XL first...

Ah okay, thanks, I didn't know that. That being said, I wonder how the jump from the Ultra to the II compares to the II to the XL. I'd imagine it's not as big of a jump, but I could be wrong. One year of updates, not one year before the III comes out. EDIT: Just saw your edit, gotcha.

It probably hasn't. I just thought it MIGHT if some of the things they implemented they hadn't planned on implementing. I think it's a very small chance though, and I'm putting my money on that timeline still being accurate. I'm just leaving room for the fact that I don't work at Fractal. :P

When did I say the AxeFX III was coming out in one year? I said that there might be one more year of free updates for the II. Cliff stated a timeline of about (at least?) 3 years for the III, a while back (maybe a year ago?). That was also before he said anything about running out of room, so that could definitely impact that timeline of his.

Cliff, Get rid of the older firmware modeling options to free up space!!

No, that's not what I was saying. You're merging two separate points I was making. 23. C

To be fair, I don't remember Cliff ever saying that more memory would result in longer firmware support for the new units, but rather advertised it as "you'll have more space for presets". So technically, it's pretty questionable whether or not this is "what you purchased". Correct me if I'm...

    Enhance Block for Recording

We're talking about two different things here, now. :) What you're talking about is when an instrument should be mono or stereo, what we're talking about is how a full stereo mix, when played back in mono (through a phone speaker, for example), stereo imagers can make certain signals disappear...
  32. C

    Enhance Block for Recording

I find the differences to be more significant, personally. Like I said before, I find it to be a much cleaner sound in regards to preserving the tone and not having any gross "smearing" of the sound like many stereo imagers I've tried. But yes, the Enhancer block can be mono compatible.
  33. C

    Enhance Block for Recording

It is mono-compatible in modern mode, yes, but it is not the same as the JST. After doing tests, both my ears and my meters show that.
  34. C

  35. C

    Enhance Block for Recording

Never, I really dislike the issues it causes. I do use widening on solos and leads though, but I use JST SideWidener. It doesn't alter the tone, it doesn't smear the image, and most importantly it keeps things mono compatible no matter how wide you go.

So how come none of the Cab IR makers do this anymore?

That's not the case for the ones I use, so maybe I'm in the minority. Fact of the matter is, small movements still make a difference. If your issue is with the labelling, then figure out a better system. If your issue is with their mic positions, I don't see why. When you're given hundreds of...

    Upgrade or not.

  38. C

So how come none of the Cab IR makers do this anymore?

  40. C

So how come none of the Cab IR makers do this anymore?

Probably because it's limiting. Lots of these makers prefer to give more variation than just the standard positions, therefore labelling them gets a bit more confusing. That's why a company like OwnHammer for example uses numbers to mark placement and distances. Personally I prefer that, just...

"Of all my IRs, which sounds the most like this Tone Match?"

I was just about to suggest this. IR's are just EQ curves, so you could easily help identify the closest IR's by doing this. Another option would be to just research what amp/cab was used during the session and try and recreate it that way. Or maybe just do a direct tone match but run it in...

    Noise Only When Playing

It's probably an electronics issue. Something may have gone wrong with the wiring. Maybe take it to a tech to look at? Just for the sake of eliminating variables also try a different cables, a different power outlet (on a different breaker), and a real amp if you can (or go direct).

    Pitch Shift 1/2 step up

I completely agree with you. That's how I see it as well, but I was trying to draw a parallel between the two products because I believe they both have value for the same reason - the creator have knowledge, skill, and abilities that we don't.

    Preset charging creators

That doesn't make sense. The IR is the copy, it is the resale. IR's aren't even taking the cab and tweaking it, capturing it as accurately as possible is the...

  53. C

    Preset charging creators

So you don't think that selling IR's is remotely similar to me making an AxeFX II patch of Eddie Van Halen's tone and selling it?
  54. C

    Preset charging creators

I think you're missing my point. I'm not talking about reselling an IR, I'm saying the IR in itself is taking a piece of real gear and reselling it digitally. OwnHammer doesn't own Mesa, the just bought a cab and resold the sound of it. Isn't that worse than taking something and tweaking it?
  55. C

    Preset charging creators

Not sure I understand it then, can you elaborate?
  56. C

    Preset charging creators

An IR is literally just capturing the sound of someone else's cabinet that they've made and reselling it in a digital format. If that's wrong, then you - as an AxeFX user - are doing something wrong by using them, aren't you? Even if you don't use IR's, isn't it wrong for you to give money to a...

    Preset charging creators

So really, your issue has nothing to do with selling presets, but rather copying presets to some extent and selling them, doesn't it?
  60. C

    Preset charging creators

I don't see how selling presets is equivalent. That sounds specific to people recreating sounds of specific artists or albums. So if I record an album of original material with a patch I made from scratch and then sell the preset I made for it, that's okay?
  61. C

    Preset charging creators
