Best poweramp for Axe III (Goal: LOUDDDDD)

For recording, currently, nothing easily beats an AXE FX 3 direct. For live use, in my opinion having tried Matrix in addition to numerous high-end tube power amps, when using the AXE FX 3 for your amp models the Fryette LXii is unbeatable. It's plenty loud enough. My least favourite was the...

Same old SS vs Valve amp debate.....

I speak from personal experience, and a slight lack of patience in spending forever trying to make a Matrix work, but I could never get a Matrix Amp to sound - or crucially FEEL -anywhere near as good as an LXii.

Wish Bogner Ecstasy 100b, and 101b Classic.

    + 1. This'd be a good one.

What do people mean when they say modelers "lack the amp feel"?

My opinion as a long time tube amp player, and for the last 12 years a Fractal user, is that for recording NOTHING currently beats the AXE FX iii. As far as playing "live" is concerned it's not quite the same but its close. Increasingly close with each big update in firmware. I'm a big Bogner...

Axe Ecstasy vs Real 20th Anniversary?

I agree. There's something about that chewiness that has eluded me so far with the Axe FX 3 Bogner Ecstasy model. It gets close, respectively so, and it may also be just me and how I dial it in, but the real amp sounds different. Or at least is easier to dial in to the expected sound/feel...

Great power amp options for axe fx3?

I have had an Lxii quite a while now. It is by far the best power amp I have used with the Axe FX. I've had Matrix power amps and used powered Friedman Cabs and they never quite cut it for me.
  7. D

Fryette and Marix Power Amps Coloring

I have an Lxii with my AXE FX 3 and have used it for years. The depth definitely adds a lot although personally I don't use it. For what it's worth I will literally only use neutral Fryette power amps with my AXE FX 3. For the quality of build, feel, and sheer volume I think they're unbeatable.

The Elusive "Tube-ry Feel" of Axe-Fx III

This "real tube" vs Axe FX argument goes on and on... :) FWIW I spend as much time tracking at home as playing live these days. When I am tracking the AXE FX 3 is unbeatable. It does everything required and so effortlessly. Live? I really tried the FRFR-only solution but was always left...

Anyone use a Bogner Cube or Orange PPC?

I use a Bogner cube. Its mighty. Honestly I didn't like the V30 and changed it for a Scumback H75 which is altogether much better. Outstanding.

Axe Fx iii with power amp and real cabinet

The LXii has a loud fan. For a bedroom it could be annoying at low volume but at a rehearsal you’d not notice it. I echo what others say in that you will notice the feel and thump associated with a good old valve head. The models translate very well.
  11. D

Axe Fx iii with power amp and real cabinet

For recording I use the AFX3 direct but when rehearsing or playing live I have my AFX3 going through a Fryette Lxii powering a traditional cab. In my opinion it's pretty close.
  12. D

    The CNFB Method

To a guitar player with absolutely no understanding what this all means I am greatly looking forward to what results from it. When Fractal start a thread outlining a new feature, or knowledge they've learned, it normally leads to good things for the product.

Axe Fx III vs. vintage 80s Rack

This was my last rack setup before I moved onto the Ultra and very quickly after that the AXE FX 2. All of the weight was a right pain. I'm glad to have reduced it to something more manageable for live use. At home and for recording nothing touches the AXE FX 3 direct in my opinion. These...

I would be very happy to lose User 2 space to allow 32 FullRes options. The fact this is being offered by Fractal as a solution is commendable.

    Fryette Lx2 ?

I bought one and love it. I too had a PS2 prior to that, and an ASC12, Matrix etc and for me it is the best. I find I tend to use it for rehearsals and live work as opposed to anything else for obvious reasons. the biggest negative I have is the fan which always seems to be on full speed but...

    Fractal discount in EU?

Choice, as in buy it there or don’t. I don’t think there’s a lack of demand if a few people decide not to buy the unit because of VAT or any other associated costs.
  23. D

    Fractal discount in EU?

It’s all a question of choice. I bought through G66 and haven’t regretted it. The same applies for cars and other products in that it can vary from country to country. Whether it’s acceptable to you is a personal decision.

Do You Guys Mostly Use 3rd Party IRs or Are You Happy with Factory Cabs/IRs?

I’ve tried quite a few third party IR’s and to date the York Audios are my favourites. I just seem to spend less time finding a good one which helps when it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole and get ear fatigue.

    Fryette LXII

I would be very interested to hear more user experiences of the LXii? Even a decent video with a few AFX amp presets would be great. The fan noise is interesting as for some it seems to be a problem and for others less so. I had a power station with the AFX2 and honestly it was the best...

So, how far has the Axe III come now?

I think the 3 sounds better than the 2 but the biggest difference for me now is the feel. It feels more like the amp blocks react like a valve amp with subtleties that we’re missing when playing on a 2.

York Audio Checkmate M25 Cab Pack is out now!!!

I just bought this pack and tried them out on my Axe FX 3. Wow! The most real sounding IR’s I’ve used to date. By that I mean what I normally hear from a cab. Not so brittle on the highs and musical. Easy to mix too. I know all the IR vendors say theirs are the “most real”, and throw...

    MESA 2:90 vs VHT 2/50/2

I have owned the 2:90 and the 2/50/2 and the Fryette was better with the AXE FX. These days, for what it's worth, I use the ASC12 and I've never been happier.

    Amp in the room simulation

Thanks for the feedback. For what it’s worth I have a Powerstation and a cab in addition to always recording directly. I never play in a bedroom but was trying to grasp whether similar tech Sonos use for their speakers had a similar use in the Axe FX. I guess I didn’t fully grasp the concept!
  46. D

    Amp in the room simulation

OK people please don’t shoot me down because I bring up ANOTHER amp in the room subject. I wonder whether tech will ever be developed that can replicate an amp in the room sound? My Sonos system uses an iPhone app to “measure” the room and subsequently makes adjustments to give the best sound...

Since it's looking like we won't be able to use the MFC-101...

To be honest I can live with that. The Axe 3 is a new product and I wouldn't expect 100% functionality of the MFC given its an older product designed around a different unit. 5 scenes is just fine for me. Providing there is a reasonably easy way of programming the MFC to suit the Axe 3 I'll...
  49. D

Since it's looking like we won't be able to use the MFC-101...

If the MFC "most likely" control an Ax3 the same way it can an Ax2 once it's set up that is very reassuring to me.
  50. D

    Modeler Stress Test

I did guess correctly but was going on the basis that the first example (the amp) sounded fuller. The second take (Axe 3) sounded a bit hollow and sample 3 wasn't enjoyable. I don't know what to think about this tbh. I guess it shows there's still some way to go to perfection?
  51. D

    MFC-101 obsolescence, firmware

Well I hope something can be done to make the MFC a more vimportant able option with the III. I'd pay for the appropriate firmware.
  52. D

Since it's looking like we won't be able to use the MFC-101...

Count me on the list of customers if a 3rd party solution is developed for the MFC.
  53. D

Since it's looking like we won't be able to use the MFC-101...

It would be a real shame if the MFC becomes abandoned as far as the Axe iii is concerned. Buying the iii AND new controllers at the same time is a big ask.

Decisions....tube or solid state power amp?

I had a Fryette 2/50/2 when I first had an Axe FX. The GT1000FX was definitely better than that amp for the Axe FX. The Power Station was designed with modelling preamps in mind and it is very neutral for a valve amp. Its in a different league for Axe FX use in comparison to a 2/50/2.
  55. D

Decisions....tube or solid state power amp?

I, at one point, had a Matrix GT1000 and a Fryette Power Station. In an A/B test the Matrix sounded a bit boomy by comparison. The Fryette in neutral settings, all Axe settings equal, sounded better but more significantly responded better to the touch. To me it felt more alive. Both great...
  56. D

Why is the Matrix GT1000 needed?

If you are considering buying a neutral power amp to compliment an axe fx you should also consider the Fryette Power Station. I had the GT1000 and Power Station for a while and the Fryette, to my ears, was superior. It was a feel thing as much as the sound. Especially at higher volume. I sold...

    Guitar cab vs FRFR?

I prefer "amp in the room". It sounds perfect for the traditional amp/cab sound and feel. This is what I use when rehearsing. But there IS a place I use FRFR. I use both at gigs. Recording I always go directly as anything else is pointless.

Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 7.01 Firmware Release

I don't often post on here. More a reader than a contributor but the Quantum 7 release, to me, is a HUGE improvement. I use my AXE 2 with a Power Station and it sounds absolutely sublime with Q7. It sounds like something game changing has taken place.
  59. D

    Fryette LXII

Yes it is but if Fryette pulls off a 2 channel version of the power station, in one rack space, reliably, he would have pulled off a master stroke. My opinion is that the LXii may still be a while away. I cannot help but think that transformers that small, for that power, may not be as good a...

Axe-Fx II Quantum Rev 3.00 Public Beta

I don't comment on here much, as everybody seems to do well at that without me, but this update has made the amps sound more real than ever, particularly with the way they respond to dynamics - pick attack, rolling off the volume etc. Classy.
  64. D

    Fryette LX2 power amp

Why is this taking so long to produce? I have always rated Fryette's amps highly but cant help thinking that there are lots of wasted opportunities flying by every time someone picks up a Matrix or alternative amplifier for their Axe.
  65. D

Anybody using a Mesa 2:90 with Quantum? Thoughts?

I don't comment on here very much but for what it's worth I had a Mesa 2:90 and then a Fryette 2:50:2 and then I ended up demoing a Matrix power amp with the AXe FX 2 amp sims and never looked back. Not even once.

    Matrix GT1000FX - a personal review

Both are great for different reasons. FRFR is great for getting that "recorded" sound and doesn't sound a million miles away from what you'd hear from the headphones. Once dialled in (and that takes some time and patience). But I still like the comfort of regular cabs playing live in smaller...

Firstly, this is a personal review and I have no affiliation with any of the manufacturers mentioned. As a recent convert to the world of AXE FX, and owner of an Axe FX 2, choosing an amplifier was always going to be a difficult choice. A bit about me... I have been playing electric guitar...

Who has " sold it all" and gone AXE FX??????

I have sold off a LOT of my stuff to be replaced with an Axe FX II. Tube amps I have owned have include Marshalls, Dual Rec's, Triaxis/2:90, VHT's and a variety of preamp/power amp combinations.
