Building a tube amp for use with AxeFx

Handwired for sure. If I use the YBA-3 chassis, it's eyelet board, and the Sound City 120 is turret board. Either way it'll be handwired. And yes, I have a couple signal generators, a couple oscilloscopes, a dummy load, tons of parts to work with including all the Mullard mustard caps that...

    Convert Ultra To Axe-II Lite

No interest here. The roadblock I hit with my Ultra is that I'm limited in how many other blocks I can run on top of two amps and two cabs. The solution for me isn't a lite anything, it's the AxeFx II. No poll option to reflect my situation.

I'm familiar with Dynaco (ultralinear, copied by SUNN, I'm not a fan of that ultralinear design at all) but didn't know marantz made tube amps. very familiar with their tape decks of course. I'll have to track down some marantz schems to see what kinda design they went with. I'm not really...

    Axe-Fx II Technical Questions Thread

Do you not have access to an anechoic chamber anywhere? I realize they're not a dime a dozen but I would have thought that would be the way to go for IR capture or evaluation. You mention needing a larger room, but don't you have issues with the floor in any room other than an anechoic chamber?

    Check internal levels for clipping

I had suggested previously, and still would like to see, the ability to have the input and output meters in AxeEdit report the input and output levels of the selected block. They do. The guitarist from the band Local H has been doing exactly that for about 20 years now. Separate pickup for bass strings, separate output, octave pedal, separate amp. Since the early 90's. :) Edit to add : that's not a production model, this is the sorta thing that you just do...

The Amazing Evolution of the Human Ear

The idea of trying to get the AxeFx to exactly simulate an amp is a silly idea in the first place. Like "jcm800" as an example-- which one, the one with EL34's or 6550's? What type of preamp tubes? What year of manufacture? The JCM800 is actually a renamed JMP Master Volume amp from the...

should I use a speaker cable with my K12?

And to further clarify, no speaker cable should ever be connected anywhere to an AxeFx, since the AxeFx is not a power amplifier. The only place speaker cables should be used (and *must* be used, for that matter) is connecting a power amplifier's output to a speaker. Speaker cables, as...

Who still uses pedals with their Axe-fx? If so which ones?

Output 2 is not a raw guitar signal, it's been through A-D, gain staging from the AxeFx input, the effect of the internal noise gate, then D-A to get back out to Ouput 2 which is affected by the Output 2 volume knob... That's a lot of stuff going on. Besides, I'm already using the Fx Loop...

Who still uses pedals with their Axe-fx? If so which ones?

I only use one pedal with my Ultra, an MXR Noise Gate / Line Driver. I'm using it for the Line Driver aspect, which includes an XLR output that I'm running into my DAW. The only reason I use the pedal is so I can record the totally dry guitar signal for reamping. It's one of the things that...

Building a tube amp for use with AxeFx

So I've decided I'm going to build a tube amp for playing live with my AxeFx. I've got a nice ~130w tube amp from the 60's that I gutted years ago which I'll be using as the starting point. It uses a choke in the PS, and runs four output tubes at very high voltage (~560VDC). The plan is to...

Three to six months is what I would go with. Depends on the supply/demand situation. If the supply was close to meeting the demand, or was exceeding it, then 3 months. If the demand was exceeding the supply (which appears to have been the case) then closer to 6 months. The further ahead you...

Don't MIDI CC's either act as binary on/off or a discreet "continuous" value from 0-127? So you'd want the tempo to be sent out of the AxeFx II with a range from 0-127 bpm? I like to write songs with tempos of 200+. What would I do? Excuse me if I'm misunderstanding how MIDI CC's work, this...

    Lincoln Brewster patches?

That's a truly bizarre idea, to pick your gear based on how readily people can copy you rather than on what sounds right. By that logic he should use a squier strat and the cheapest fender he can find at guitar center.

    A Common Axe-FX complaint:

Oh and I've found that a nice way to adjust the balance of mids vs highs and lows is to use a filter block right before the output that's set for a bandpass with a freq in the mids (my lead tone is set just above 2k) and a very very low Q (0.12 on my lead tone). Lets you control the rolling off...

    A Common Axe-FX complaint:

For tighter low end, try turning up the power supply filtering of the amp by adjusting the "B+ cap" setting on the "Amp Geek" page. You can mess with the "Low Freq Resonance" and "Spkr Res Freq" and "XFormer Low Freq" settings, too. And of course, for actual real bass frequencies, headphones...

The manual, like the AxeFx itself, is pretty technical and I could see both the manual and the AxeFx...

Frames cobra and Splawn nitro amp sim tweak

The Cobra runs most of the preamp gain stages with just shy of 400V on the plates, which is actually outside the spec for 12ax7 tubes. The Mesa runs most of them under 300v, even as low as 200v or just above that on a couple stages. So that's a rather significant difference right there. I...

Frames cobra and Splawn nitro amp sim tweak

I love my Cobra but haven't tried to simulate it with the AxeFx. My full-on recording setup is a dual-amp setup in the AxeFx along with the unprocessed signal going to the Cobra. It sounds great. Actually the AxeFx patch I've made sounds better on its own than the Cobra on its own, but the...
