Jeff Loomis - Fractal artist drinking someone elses kool-aid... ?

As far as I know, Loomis uses both the Axe and the Kemper, and Merrow uses the Kemper. Loomis has a bunch of online vids where you can see the Axe in the background. No need for either/or, you can appreciate and use both products.

I think it's pretty amazing, even though it's not "his music". Loomis (IMO) is a shredder who is also pretty musical, as opposed to someone like Rusty Cooley, who has top-notch technique but not much going on (IMO) melodically.

Thanks for the recommendations, that logic behind that stylus pick appeals to me so I have a package on the way. I think I'm getting into bad habits and digging the pick too deep into the strings, that could be a major part of my problem. The vids are great too, all a part of the learning process.

So what's the deal with pick ups?

I don't know what Periphery specifically used to record what you're listening to, but Bulb uses Mayones 7 and 8 string guitars and he has also used Bareknuckle Aftermath pickups (among other things). The Aftermaths definitely sound different than most standard (traditional) pups.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered 300 times, I looked at the wiki and the manual as well as searching the forum and I couldn't find the answer. If I'm on firmware 7 and I want to upgrade to 9.02 do I need to install every individual firmware update between 7 and 9.02 or should I...

Recommend me some technical metal

The first that comes to mind is Scale the Summit, and all-instrumental band that rocks. Also, Haken, kind of a prog-rock metal band with good vox. I agree with many of the other bands posted as well.
