NGD! PRS SE Mark Holcomb signature: Killswitch Engage - Numbered Days

Bought a new PRS SE Mark Holcomb gig, and I must say I'm very impressed with it. It's a lot of guitar for the money. Here's a short clip of Killswitch Engage's "Numbered Days" with it.

    Outstanding! Really well played, dude.

Advice needed for first gig after a LONG break

I definitely wouldn't want to read chords while playing, but I was pre-empting anyone asking if I could read sheet music :). I was going to do exactly what you suggested, but would really like to put up a tight performance.

Advice needed for first gig after a LONG break

Fellow Fractalites, I need your help! I quit playing live music after becoming a dad. After a 3 year break, one of my close friends asked me to play live for his covers band coz his guitarist suddenly had to cancel. I said yes without realising what a challenge this will be - I basically have...

    Gojira - Silvera

Guitars reamped through the Axe FXII 5153 Blue sim, into one of the Marshall cab IR's. No patch - just tweaked till it sounded good. What do you guys think?

    2x12 kills a 4x12?

Dude, what is the possibility of putting together a "best of" cab pack with your favourites?
  8. H

Nightwish - Ever Dream (feat. Minniva)

Fantastic singer! This is one of my favourite Nightwish songs. Any chance you have the Midi files and DI's for this track? I'd love to give the mix a shot.

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

I'm really happy with the tone, but the drums screw up this mix. Nolly has a couple of killer KSE covers which are just fantastic...Check them out on his soundcloud.
  10. H

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

Sigh..I agree, mate. I wish I hadn't been in a rush to complete the song, I would have done a better job of the drum mix.
  11. H

Veil of Maya - Mikasa (ML Sound Lab Bulb pack 13)

Haha, I really wish that were true. But thank you for the kind words, mate!
  12. H

Veil of Maya - Mikasa (ML Sound Lab Bulb pack 13)

Mikko, you're too kind! But the original mix is just amazing. I wish I could make my drums sound half as good. I'm pretty happy with where I got with the tools at hand, though :)
  13. H

Veil of Maya - Mikasa (ML Sound Lab Bulb pack 13)

Hey mate. Agreed, but the original actually has louder drums. The guitars are actually pretty low compared to the drums and vox. I didn't want to take a different approach. I'm using Superior Drummer.
  14. H

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

To be honest, I was initially going for Mix 03 or 05, but as I started auditioning each IR, this one just had that character I was looking for. End result in the mix turned out great!
  15. H

Veil of Maya - Mikasa (ML Sound Lab Bulb pack 13)

Happy new year everyone! Thought I'd start off the year with a challenging song and mix. I absolutely love this album, and I think this song is especially banging! For this mix, I used ML Sound Lab's Bulb Pack 13 (Bulb Mix 08), this pack sounds great on any guitar patch..the number of options...

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

Haha, I'm a diehard Killswitch fan too, I just cant get over them! I think I had a good mix, and I neglected the drums by finalising in a hurry once I thought I had the guitars nailed. Oh well, live and learn :)! Thanks for the awesome comment, put a smile on my face.
  18. H

Rage Against the Machine - Bombtrack!

Duuuuuude...what a unique choice of song, what a fantastic tone and what a superb mix. Wow, well done!

RACER X - Loud And Clear | full cover w/ vocals

Rocco dude, your guitar and mixing skills need no further comment, everyone know you're super talented. But man, your singer is fantastic...what range!
  20. H

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

Hey dude. Try the Fabfilter Saturn. You can create frequency spectrums and focus on the ones you want to saturate. Actual frequencies will depend on your source tone, so there's no set rules to this. Also, tape saturation is a pretty common practice in mixing.
  21. H

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

Hey mate. Agreed, the drums in this mix poke out a bit. Matter of fact, I did another mix before, and my initial mix had better drums, but I thought they could be punchier. In hindsight, that mix is probaby better. Tell me if you agree:
  22. H

ML Bulb Cab Pack 13 - Killswitch Engage "Eye of the Storm"

Hey guys, I've tried to dial in one of my favourite guitar tones ever, which is on KSE's "As Daylight Dies". I believe it's a mix of the Soldano SLO and the Mesa Triple Recto, both boosted via a Maxon OD808. I've just used a OD808 boosted 5153 Blue into one of the sims on the ML Bulb Cab pack...

Very excited to finally buy a Mayones Duvell Elite 7, and I got a chance to record with it this weekend. Here's a quick clip with the Friedman HBE and the Bulb ML USA E906-MD421 02 from Cab Pack 13 (amazing set of IR's, I gotta say).

Gojira -"Explosia" Mix practice (DI's included)

Thanks, man :). The drums took a couple of days to program. It wasn't a very difficult song, drum-wise. Well, have fun mixing this track and post the results here if you can. Good luck!
  26. H

Gojira -"Explosia" Mix practice (DI's included)

Thanks! Yep, guitars are all Axe FX II, with some post processing. Bass is a DI processed in the DAW.

Gojira -"Explosia" Mix practice (DI's included)

Gojira are incredible. Check them out live if they are ever playing in your area..you will be blown away.

Gojira -"Explosia" Mix practice (DI's included)

Metal dudes - Here's my cover of Gojira's "Explosia". I have added the DI's and drum midi for you to practice your mixing with. The guitars were recorded using a 5150 patch on the Axe FX that I've included in soundcloud. Tempos are embedded in the files. Have fun, and post your results here...

Black Dahlia Murder - Moonlight Equilibrium

Black Dahlia Murder - Moonlight Equilibrium

    Cheers dude...appreciate it :)
  33. H

Black Dahlia Murder - Moonlight Equilibrium

My favourite modern death metal guitar tone has to be Black Dahlia Murder's 5150 tone...and here's my attempt to dial it in on FW18. This is the second BDM track I've tried to cover...preferred my previous mix, but I guess this will do for a quick cover. What do you guys think?
  34. H

    Watched Karnivool last night again...

Man, how I love this band...One guitarist on his traditional 5150 rig with a monster pedalboard and the other with an Axe FX, and during the soundcheck when they tested the two, I honestly could not tell the difference between them. The show itself was amazing, and they got an incredible sound...
  35. H

Axe Fx II - Gravity Storm - Cemetery Gates Pantera

That was fucking outstanding, dude! Well done, it's not an easy song to cover...and that PRS doesn't really have have a whammy bar, does it? Amazing that you coaxed out the divebombs on it!
  36. H

    Nuno Bettencourt Tone (Warheads)

Amazingly well played. One of my favourite solos of all time...really well done :encouragement:
  37. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

I've had a few requests for this backing track. If anyone else is interested, I've uploaded this to soundcloud and have enabled downloads. Link below: Let me see some covers with better delay and flanger settings than mine!
  38. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Aw, thanks for the kind comments, guys. I don't think I quite got the overdriven sound in this song - all my guitars are metal orientated. In fact, I used a 7 string for this mix, and avoided the low string :lol. I'm sure I can get really close with the right guitar.
  39. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Wow, that sounds like an awesome experience. From his interviews etc that I see on the web, he seems like a super cool, down to earth guy. One of my childhood heroes as well!
  40. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Hi Ludo. Thanks for the interest. Unfortunately, I didn't write the full backing track - just the minute or so that you hear on the cover. Happy to bounce down a version without guitars and send it to you. PM me you email address and I'll send it to u tonight.
  41. H

    Periphery - The Bad Thing

Juggernaut is probably the best thing that Periphery have released. This especially, is my favourite heavy section from them. I really struggled with Nolly's ridiculously good bass tone...I really couldn't nail it. I could've probably got better results if I had fresh strings, but hey ho...let...

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

Maybe actually listen to some LOG before you comment on the snare sound I'm trying to go for.

it's not you, dude. The toms are too loud for sure.
  44. H

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

But what the heck, I'll cover it again. The patch is ready anyway ;)
  45. H

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

Laid to Rest is one of my favourite LOG tracks. But I believe someone covered it and posted a patch for it here on the forum. It was a while ago, but definitely remember seeing one.
  46. H

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

Ah, cheers dudes. I'm not entirely happy with the toms, they kinda spoil the mix a bit. Need to learn more about drum production. But thank you for the awesome feedback. By the way, Gorilla just sent me a remaster of my cover, which sounds great. Gorilla - you should post it here, dude.
  47. H

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

Lamb of God - Blacken the Cursed Sun (patch included)

Hey guys. I've been absent from the forum for a while now...but back now. I've tried to capture Lamb of God's tone on Sacrament in this mix (I believe it's all Mesa Mark IV) using the USA Lead Brt+ sim. I've also used a TS808 Mod in front to tighten up the lows, which in hindsight, I could...
  49. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Wow, this is awesome :). I'll PM you now, and we can take it from there.
  50. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Afraid not. I normally just do about a minute or 2 when I cover a track, just to see of I can nail the tones etc. If you really need the backing track, I can do the whole song for you without the guitars, but it'll take some time.
  51. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

Ah, thank you, guys. Some great feedback here. Stringtheorist - no backing track. I created the track. Programmed the drums and synths, and I played all guitars and bass. Happy to export and pass it to you minus the guitars, if you need a backing track to use with your patch. Let me know.
  52. H

    Extreme - Nuno Bettencourt's 90's Soldano tone

So I decided to listen back to some of the stuff I used to listen to as a kid, and played some Extreme after I dunno how many years. I had forgotten how amazing Nuno Bettencourt is...he was one of my heroes when I was growing up. III Sides to Every Story was a masterpiece! I decided to cover one...

Oh hey guys :). Been away from the forum for a couple of weeks, so missed out on all these great comments. Thanks for the feedback! Drawnacrol - Of all my guitars, there are 2 that are my go-to for recording. One's an Ibanez RGD7421 that I use for my 7 string stuff. The other is an Agile...

Trivium - Shattering the Skies Above

Haha, true. But I believe they were still using Fractal live when this album was cut. I wouldn't dare cover any of their tracks from their toaster years ;)
  56. H

Trivium - Shattering the Skies Above

Quick cover of my favourite Trivium song. Believe it or not, I just used my Whitechapel patch and did a ton of post-EQ to get that juicy 5150 tone. Love the production on this album, check it out.
  57. H

Whitechapel, FAS Modern heavy 7 string

I've not really used the FAS Modern much, but it nails the Whitechapel tone. Let me know what you all think of this.

    br00tz clip - 7's/not shit/genuinely heavy - fw4

    Framus Cobra?

Have I nailed the Framus Cobra tone? I've been lusting after the Framus Cobra tone on the Axe for a while now. I owned one on the past, and it's probably the ballsiest amp I've ever owned. Although Cliff said the Cobra was a rip-off of the Dual Rectifier, I could never dial in anything...

  61. H

    Possible bug in FW 15.02

Hi Sean, 1. I would have thought saturation should change only the amount or nature of saturation. I certainly did not expect the levels to fluctuate so significantly. 2. Same as above. But, I don't remember seeing the clipping light flashing on the Axe. I will take another look this evening...

    Possible bug in FW 15.02

Hi Cliff, all. There seem to be a couple issues with using saturation and tonestacks in the new firmware. The two that I found are: 1. Saturation: when levels when switching between the 3 saturation modes in some amps seem to fluctuate a lot. The "on (authentic) and on (ideal)induce crackling...

    Karnivool

I just saw them yesterday at Sonisphere. One guitarist was using the Axe FX while the second was using the 5150 rig with a monster perdalboard that they used to previously use. The Axe was sitting on top of a Marshall stack - I was wondering if he was actualy using the Marshall, and using the...

Lol...I just realised I messed up the title. It's meant to be OUR Endless War, sorry!
  65. H

Whitechapel - My Endless War (patch included)

Thanks dude. Yeah, definitely thinner than the original. It was getting muddy so I had to get rid of some frequencies and hi-pass at 100. I used the FAS modern and a stereo cab. I've included the patch in the sound cloud description. Check it out if interested :)
  66. H

Whitechapel - My Endless War (patch included)

How's this tone? I couldn't quite get that "grain" in the midrange, but pretty close, IMHO. Feedback please?

    Quick and heavy...Teh Brootalz

Quick recording with Teh Brootalz sim. This and Severe are my favourite amps now. Let me know what y'all think!
  69. H

    Damn writer's block...

I think you hit the nail on the head. The number of times I've recorded something the past couple of weeks, and then immediately deleted it thinking "meh, I can do better than that" is crazy. OK, I'll try and let the ideas flow naturally and see what comes out of it. Thanks!
  70. H

    Damn writer's block...

Some good tips here, especially Fabio - thanks for taking the time to write out that long answer :) I'm a metal guitarist, so my writing is limited to writing good riffs. I was thinking - I recently went though a phase where I wrote 3 complex songs for my band, including drums and bass. Ideas...

    Damn writer's block...

I just can't seem to get any ideas going, and it's bugging me so much! The more I try, the less ideas I seem to come up with. What do you guys do to get over writer's block?
  72. H

    Thank you, Cliff

I'm a huge fan of good high gain amps, and with FW14, you blew me away. Teh Brootalz and Severe are nothing short of fantastic, and whatever you did to the FAS modern has made it into an amazing sounding amp. I just wanna say thanks for all the work you've put in...truly appreciated...
  73. H

    BROOTALZ Appreciation post

Sick production, man. 2 questions: 1. What snare is that? It's got a nice snap...love it! 2. Did you have the bright switch on or off? Cheers dude.

The Black Dahlia Murder's compressed high gain 5150 tone

Thanks dude. Chain is Comp - Drive (TS OD) - 6160 Block - Stereo Cab (Recto OH + Solo V12, I believe). I normally wouldn't use a comp on a high gain patch, but needed it here for a bit of that squishiness.

The Black Dahlia Murder's compressed high gain 5150 tone

Thanks for the feedback so far, guys. Fabio - I parallel EQ and parallel compress the guitars, I run a multiband compressor to tame certain frequencies, I use tape saturation, and I notch out some offending frequencies, etc etc. Most of this certainly could be done on the Axe, but its a lot...

The Black Dahlia Murder's compressed high gain 5150 tone

This is undoubtedly the toughest song I've attempted to mix. Always wanted to dial in the Black Dahlia Murder's guitar tone. The guitars were easy enough, but the drums were a complete pain in the ass (as you can imagine). Not just to program, but to make them sit well in the mix when there is...

    Guitar "mojo"?

So, I saw this battered old Ibanez RGR465M on ebay, and bought it for £150, thinking it would be good for parts or a project to learn how to strip and repaint guitars. 7 String + FAS Modern II heavy

Hmm, that's strange...I've always exported to MP3, but I've heard this effect only on my last few mixes. 7 String + FAS Modern II heavy

Here's a cover of "Deadweight" by Heart of a Coward. This was fun. Took all of 2 hours to write the drums, set the patch, figure out the guitars and track everything. Guitars were on a FAS Modern II patch (I prefer the 5150, but the FAS sounds pretty sweet too). Enjoy, and any feedback welcome...

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Gorilla's ALMOST got it :). The only drawback of recording DI for me has been the lack of harmonic content / feedback. It's just too "sterile". So, what I do for feedback is - I play the root note / chord, and then, depending on how high I want the simulated feedback's frequency to be, I play...

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

I got a geeky tip / question for you recording guys. Can someone figure out how I got the feedback at about 5 seconds into the track, given that I was playing at bedroom levels?
  89. H

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

I do believe it's the air settings that are giving the cabs that massive "in the room, moving air" kinda feel. I reached these settings after plenty of experimentation. I haven't tried using this patch live with my band yet, but definitely works well for recording. Let me know how you guys get...

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Hey Eric. I agree, I think its the saturation that's gone a bit over the top. My signal chain on the 2bus is an SSL compressor (1-2 db gain reduction) -> saturation plugin -> Multi Band Compressor -> Limiter. I do have an EQ at the top of the chain, but it was bypassed coz I was happy with the...

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

  94. H

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Ah, the drums are what took up 90% of the total time spent on this track. I used SD2, but there is a huge amount of processing that went in. Still not happy with it, but it gets me in the ballpark.
  95. H

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

No problem, I'll post the patch tonight after work.
  96. H

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Thanks dude! And THANK YOU for A/B'ing against the original. I was a bit surprised by people saying there's too much gain, but I'm chalking that down to them not comparing this to the original. I would normally use a lot less gain than this, but it seems this is how much Whitechapel have used...

Crushingly heavy 5150 tone - Whitechapel's "Darkest Day of Man"

Thanks! Good to see one person who knows what he's talking about. There are indeed 3 rhythm guitar tracks (hard L and R, and a centre one that's automated to come up in the appropriate sections). There are also 3 tracks with reverbs etc. that I've used to emulate the feedback around 10 seconds...
