New Suhr has "dead" notes :(

Sorry to hear of your dead note issue, @unix-guy It’s great that Suhr is working on this, because it’s a common problem and not easily solved. I’ve had this exact issue with several guitars, cheap and expensive. I don’t blame the maker. These kind of odd things happen when using natural...

Issues and bugfixes with Fractal Audio products

I would rate FAS at the top of the excellent support list. Axe-FX Standard, Ultra, Axe-II, and AX8 owner here — never had a problem. The only time I ever even saw a bug was in beta firmware, as discussed here. And even then it was pretty minor and specific. I have zero concerns.

    dialing it in

I read a bit from Matt Schofield in some magazine a number of years ago that outlines basically the same method. It kinda sorta works. The problem is that there are amps where the controls are interactive. This can be a decent way to find a starting point on an unfamiliar amp, sometimes.

    Entering the Fractal World. TME

When you're running that bad boy into the power section of your 5150, be sure to set the low resonance to where you think it sounds best. There's an entry by Cliff in the Tech Notes section that talks about this setting, what it does, etc. I've found it useful when using a power amp and can. I...

Down The Rabbit Hole And Back... (IR Content)

This. My initial efforts were a rabbit hole time suck. This was back in the Ultra days. The problem I had was pure over-analysis on my part. I had to learn to trust my initial reaction -- does this sound good, yes or no. Next. These days I have learned that there's no point in the eye doctor...

Recently got my first AxeFX-XL, any reason why most presets are "dark" sounding? Is this normal?

It's not a global setting -- OP has already checked those things. The reality is, there's not much outside of the per-block settings within the preset that can make presets overall sound dark. The global eq is one thing to look at but it appears OP has done that and it was flat. It's just that...

Recently got my first AxeFX-XL, any reason why most presets are "dark" sounding? Is this normal?

I find a lot of the presets dark, muffled, and unusable out of the box. I can tweak them to get them where I want, but don't see the point in the effort. For new people, load an amp and load a cab. Turn BMTP knobs to get balance you're looking for. Swap cabs for different character. The...

    Changing tubes...no real difference.

Agreed. I thought it odd to lead so forcefully with the idea that tubes "don't have a sound". Neither does a volume pot, or capacitor. Or software. But they all affect changes in the context of a specific circuit that is meant to produce sound. Things can get pretty philosophical when you...

Should I try to "bake in" my FOH EQ (for inexperienced/busy/deaf/stoned Sound guys)?

They *should*. In my experience, sound guys who work for a room *generally* know their @$$ from a hole in the wall. But there is another whole level of "sound guys" -- people who were once just friends of a band who were asked to turn up the guitarist during solos, or who were failed musicians...

Hollow body flavor - Thoughts / Tips?

You could try something cool with an IR. Seems like someone out there has shot an IR of a semi-hollow guitar. I haven't tried it in this manner, but it works great with acoustic guitar IR's to warm up and add body to a piezo-equipped acoustic electric. You'd have to find a way to add it (I...

    Speaker Drive setting and interactions

I don't find that speaker drive does all that much. I hear it, but it's subtle. I don't remember if I've ever cranked it to 10, maybe it's much more noticeable there. But I doubt I could notice anything major between settings of 0 and 1. Perhaps because of the tones I go for? (Typically...

    New ax8

I don't doubt that stock presets don't sound great through real cabs. They weren't made for that environment. Clear a patch, and load an amp block. Pick an amp model. Tweak the low resonance frequency on the speaker tab -- very key. You should hear/feel when you get that live amp punch in...

I'm sure the Bose sounds great. Trevor is just outstanding. It makes sense that he'd be using an Axe-Fx to get his tones live. I saw ARW in Boston a few weeks ago, and Trevor was just stellar. Pretty terrible mix though. When the sound guy bothered to turn him up, his tones were great.

Cliff, Get rid of the older firmware modeling options to free up space!!

It's possible -- maybe even likely -- that removing the option to run older modeling will do nothing at all for extending the life for Mark I/II. All this arguing and pontificating may be nothing more than wasted time and bits. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Cliff is just sitting back and...

Recording tube head with axe fx cab sims?

I like the idea of being able to add quality effects into the chain. Wondering if there will be a loop, like the Fryette Power Station has? I liked that concept, but the implementation was half hearted to me, as the "line out" does not get the signal from the effects loop -- only the dry amp signal.

    Pick the real amp...

Actually, I'll take a moment to disagree with myself here. It's not the only way. If someone had the ability to spot...

  65. 5150

    Pick the real amp...

I didn't say that it was the point, to begin with. IF someone is saying that it has a recognizable imprint, the way to test for that would be a double blind test against the real amp(s). Simply recording (and then mixing) a bunch of clips from the models and simply insisting there must be an...

    Pick the real amp...

Exactly!!! 100% agreed. In other words, don't change the IR between tests. Don't move the mic, don't change the speaker. Don't swap guitars. Don't swap players. You try to keep everything as consistent as possible and change only the one variable that you're trying to test for, at a time...
  67. 5150

    Pick the real amp...

Well, if you (not you specifically) didn't have a real world test to compare the model(s) to, any speculation that there is add'l or unwanted sounds/tones is nothing but pure speculation, especially if it's not immediately noticeable to the majority of people.
  68. 5150

    Pick the real amp...

I'm not saying that scratchy-ness (or whatever other "sonic imprint" people hear) is caused by IR's. If you are testing for an audible difference between the Axe and a real amp, you would want to set up a signal chain where the only difference between the test samples is the change from Axe to...

    Pick the real amp...

It's been interesting to watch the responses here, as well as the statistical analysis on an experiment that has some fundamental flaws. Using Axe Fx as attenuator with tube amp

Yeah, it's just decreasing the volume level of the signal before it's hitting the power amp. There was this seller on eBay years ago -- heck, maybe they're still around -- that sold a "device" that was marketed to make your amp sound better, if it had an effects loop. It was just a volume pot...

  85. 5150

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

I think Jack is referring to the amp sims in the Axe. "Non-master volume" amps default with the master volume knob on the model set to 10. This doesn't mean the modeled amp is cranked, as we normally use the word. In order to "crank" it, you use the input control, which acts like the "volume"...

This is very interesting, Simeon. How much are you cutting in the global EQ? I'm curious.
  91. 5150

Got my Axe Fx.....but not impressed so far.

Monitoring is critical. Running a $2500 modeler into a practice amp is going to make it sound like a practice amp. If you're tight on cash because of the Axe purchase, I'd suggest getting a decent pair of studio monitors instead of an FRFR solution of some sorts. In my opinion, you can get...
