Fender FR-12 preamp mod : The Hissterectomy

Just received a FR-10 from Sweetwater. Super tiny, super loud, a bit harsh in the upper mids with knobs at noon, and lots of hiss. I'm looking forward to ordering a shiny V2 and replacing the hissy preamp as soon as possible!

    Anyone have an electric car?

Oh, yeah and it's designed and made here in the USA. Not sure how many cars are still made here, and I have nothing against foreign car companies, but I thought that was cool! When our Model Y was ready we picked it up from the Fremont factory. My guess is they made it that day or maybe the day...

    Anyone have an electric car?

We bought a Tesla Model Y two months ago. It's the first new car I've ever bought. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but we love it. We've been on some pretty long drives and I found I actually enjoy taking a 10 to 20 minute break every 2 or 3 hours. While long road trips can't be quite as...

    CLR on speaker stand, anyone?

I sometimes stack 2 CLRs. Small footprint and you can control levels to your ears (top one) and levels going out past your ankles into the room (bottom one). It's kind of like a hifi vertical 2x12 setup.

    Suhr vs PRS vs ??

Just saw your last post. Looks awesome. Personally I've bought all my Suhr and Anderson guitars used. When you find what you want it is often less than half price of a custom build. Maybe someday if I know exactly what I want I'll get a custom build.

    Suhr vs PRS vs ??

I have a few Andersons and I really love them. One thing that is great about them is they do short (Gibson) scale as well as Fender scale. I really like the neck joint. I definitely prefer it to my Suhr neck joints which feel more clunky and traditional and just in the way. Suhr guitars are...

Here's another option: Use a compressor block after everything else for your IEM output. Set it to compress aggressively but set threshold to only trigger when lead boost is on. This could help limit the signal to your ears when it goes above normal (non lead boost) levels.

Most "in the room" FRFR solution

I think this is splitting hairs here. Far-field IRs are still generated via microphones. Also I didn't say "guitar speaker" sound bouncing around the room just "speaker sound". I guess this hair splitting is natural when people are focused on specific technical details like this. I just feel...

Most "in the room" FRFR solution

Well, that's why I said "in one sense". Amp in the room is not just the guitar speaker, it is also the sound of that speaker/cab combination reflecting in the room. I have a Classic T that is a wonderful guitar. Played on many many gigs. Doesn't get as much play time these days as my Anderson Cobra T is more my style. The Cobra is short scale, mahogany, 2 humbuckers and so it's not a true Tele, but to me it is even better for what I do.

Have you played AX8 live with no issues on the lag; without compensating in anyway?

I would certainly like to have seamless switching with no lag as well. The Fractal gear does many things incredibly well, but this is not something that they have perfected. I think it would take a new design and new hardware to make it work at least with the features (scenes, presets, x/y) that...
  37. S

Have you played AX8 live with no issues on the lag; without compensating in anyway?

Yes, there are delays which can be larger or smaller depending on the way you configure the AX8 and set up your patches. The AxeFX also has delays under certain circumstances that require either luck or planning to avoid or minimize. AxeFX is more powerful and there are less delays and more...

Which commonly used mic changes the cab tone the least?

Previous posters have alluded to this, but the problem here is that you are close mic'ing a guitar speaker/cab. This is not the same as hearing the cabinet from any other position or distance. There is no mic that will capture what you hear in the room. It can capture what you hear when you put...

Has anybody here tried an Axe Fx with an open back speaker cabinet?

In other words the low end can get flubby and unpredictable.
  48. S

Has anybody here tried an Axe Fx with an open back speaker cabinet?

Open back cabs are typically not used for high gain because they do not have tightly controlled and finely tuned low and low mid frequency response. The other side of the coin is that they are often preferred for clean tones because the open back setup can give more "body" and "amp in the room"...

Start with a basic simple preset. Amp, Cab, Reverb. Find a great amp tone with a good complimentary Cab IR. "IR"s and Cab Blocks . . . . I don't understand

IR means Impulse Response. It is created by sending an "impulse" (fast transient frequency sweep signal) through a speaker cabinet and recording the result. It is basically capturing the transient frequency reponse eq curve of a mic'd cab. The Axe-FX can generate this transient sweep or you can...

    Frfr, nothing above CLR

Meyer is not in the market of light/portable/economical FRFR. They are so expensive that no one has done a shoot out between them and CLR speakers. Yes, I use the knobs to dial in sound with different cabs, rooms/stages and bands (trio, 4 piece, 5 piece, etc.), and different guitars during sound check. Its great to be able to edit right at my feet! I do have a few wishes for improvement of usability: I wish that you could pull up the...

    RCF NX12 alternative?

Yes you can do this. I happened to try this using XLR for my mic and 1/4" for my AX8 a couple weeks ago. Works great but I had to massively drop levels on AX8 because the RCF was in Mic level mode.
  79. S

What is "it" that the axe fx is missing?

Real speaker/cab (vs Mic'd IR sound) coupled with real tube power amp is a big difference. Another smaller difference is that there are a few milliseconds of latency for both A/D and D/A conversion. Input impedence might be different too. There are lots of subtle differences.
  80. S

Why Doesn't It Sound The Same...

Check Global -> Amp Gain and Input Pad settings on AXE-8. Check global EQs. Check I/O settings like Copy L to R vs Summing L/R for inputs/outputs (sorry don't have my system with me but hopefully that makes some sense)

Which pair of amp + cab did you find most useful for stage/PA use?

Sounds pretty similar to me. I do play leads whenever I have the opportunity, but I use a drive block to push the amp for that. Try the Maz 38. It is beautiful and excellent in a live setting. Which pair of amp + cab did you find most useful for stage/PA use?

Maz 38 for probably 100 gigs now (with Axe-Fx mostly). Thing sounds great. I use it mostly clean with just a bit of hair on X and on Y more preamp gain for a nice low gain breakup up/drive sound. I'll chime in here too. The Atomic CLR is has a ton of clarity throughout the full frequency range.
