Good Marshall style amps; bridging the gap between vintage and modern?

My actual Friedman BE-100 sounds just like you've explained, briding the gap between vintage and modern dream Marshall tones. I couldn't bond with the Axe models for some reason however. Best poweramp for Axe III (Goal: LOUDDDDD)

Well, as far as guitar goes I think we can agree that it's mostly associated with tube tone, dynamics and feel. Fryette got as close as you could get with the LXII - as transparent as it gets with tubes while still retaining the characteristics you love tubes for. I think it's a perfect pairing...

The more IRs are used, the more realistic the amp/cab in the room sound is

I think you're just simply trying to achieve something that doesn't make sense to achieve through the utilized means (IRs). A recorded sound usually means the recording of the sound of a miked up cab. The amp in the room sound only exists in the room - it's perceived by your ears and it's...

Noticeable benefits of going FRFR cab over guitar cab/power amp.

If you have good studio monitors you're fine. Good FRFR cabs will sound a little bigger and fuller but will have the same general sound signature. If you're looking for a real amp in the room guitar tone like you're used to with a head and guitar cab just get a good power amp and a guitar cab.

I tend to agree with the OP about the Marshalls in the Axe sounding quite dark but I'm basing this on the fact that I've actually used real Plexis and JCMs into a Suhr RL - tremendously bright, can get absolutely ear piercing and eardrum shattering. Is it pleasant when listening to it isolated...

    Recommend Active Speaker for FXiii

I'll second that - the EVs sound nicer and more accurate while the FR-12 feels more like a traditional guitar cab in the low end. There's also a massive price difference between them. FWIW, I've ended up keeping a single FR-12 because I'm still more of a power amp - traditional guitar cab guy.
