    What am I doing wrong?

Great advice Paul, thanks. Have you (or any users you know of) A/B'd the Axe with amps like the GT800 or the Fryette against a real valve amp? I'd love to find a way of testing something out before shelling out the cash.

    What am I doing wrong?

I've had my Axe-Fx Standard for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it to record with – I've got some amazing tones and find that matching sounds I hear on recordings is a doddle (with a bit of help from Logic's MatchEQ ;)). I also gigged with it for about 9 months, running the Axe-Fx...

HELP Power Amp with Axe Fx Ultra Suggestions

I would think almost certainly this is a factor. In a band setting you need waaay more mids than you think – the guitar is a mid-range instrument, remember ;) Try cutting the bass, just about everything below 80Hz and boost your midrange frequencies. Do this at band level volume, with the bass...

What Are Your Favorite Amp Sims? (Post-FW11 Version)

I use the JCM800 with Redwirez EVM12 IRs for playing live (classic rock, mainly) – it sounds great, cuts through beautifully and sits in the band mix well. When practising at home it's a choice from the Trainwreck, Dr Maz or the CarolAnn (the latter using Don Petersen's excellent Two-Rock...

    Reverb tips/help

This is great advice Don and has helped me greatly already. The percussive slapping tip is excellent for actually hearing the differences in the types of reverb at 100% and really helps when dialing the 'correct' level from 0%. You're right about the pre-delay sounding a bit odd in isolation –...

    Reverb tips/help

One area (of many ;)) I struggle with my Axe-Fx is dialing in the Reverb block effectively. I've read all the stuff in the Wiki, tried running in series and in parallel, but never seem to get the really stellar reverb sounds I believe are possible with the Axe. For example, I've pretty much...

    Recording an 'uncoloured' test tone

I'm currently using LA Convolver with Logic Pro to test various IRs and wondered what's exactly happening when I record a sample loop direct from my Axe-Fx with no cab sim? For IR testing, I want to generate a guitar loop that's just the amp signal, so I have a patch setup with just one amp...

Sync Axe-Fx to Logic 9's tempo

I'd never tried this before reading your original post, but here's how I made it work for me. First, check your Audio MIDI setup to see how your Axe-Fx is named/referred to. See the first attachment step_00.jpg for how mine is setup – my Axe MIDI configuration is conveniently named 'Axe-Fx'...

    2x Guitars -> 1x AxeFx Ultra -> 1x Atomic Reactor Active Wedge

I'm assuming you won't be playing both guitars at the same time (although if you are, let me know where and I'll buy tickets), so a simple AB switch will do the job. You could use a Lehle AB, or a simple Boss AB-2. I use the latter 'cos it's cheap and it works fine.

Rethink, Rework, Reboot. Building a preset - JCM800 - Major Twist for ANY Preset

  69. jonPhillips

Rethink, Rework, Reboot. Building a preset - JCM800 - Major Twist for ANY Preset

That's something to think about Scott. I run an overall blocking PEQ with a low cut at 81Hz and a hi cut at 6kHz – are you suggesting ditching this? Also, what effect will the low cut on the amp have? Seeing as how I've always had great results using your techniques, it'd be shame to write...

Rethink, Rework, Reboot. Building a preset - JCM800 - Major Twist for ANY Preset

I have to say this isn't working for me. As the lone guitarist in a tribute band that historically used (a minimum of) two guitar parts for 90% of their songs, I need a tone that's thick and full, but without the bottom end killing the bass guitar. I tried this new IR recipe of Scott's on...

Well, I'm not really a metalhead – more classic rock and blues – but that is one killer group of recommendations. I've included the patch I made with these settings and with my LP it sounds awesome. I've added a reverb block (with just a small amount of pre-delay to get an in-room sound...

    Sounding Small

That's very close to what I've run my PEQ at ever since you made that post a few months back about the fundamental frequencies of the various guitar strings. My band 1 actually runs at 81Hz, which sits in our band mix really well. Another great tip from you and one I've used ever since.
  75. jonPhillips

Minimizing "fizz" and "buzz" on patches

You could also try a shelving filter to remove all frequencies above 6 - 6.5kHz.
  76. jonPhillips

What outboard gear/effects are you using with the Axe-FX - and why?

Very occasionally I'll use an Xotic BB Plus into a Fender Amp (just seems to have something I haven't managed to replicate with the Axe. Yet). Also very occasionally I'll use a Vox wah when I need my Mission pedal for other effects in a patch. I also like my MXR script logo Phase 90, but that's...

A few patches for you (ones I use in my covers band)

Very nice indeed – that's an excellent sounding harmony. I'd thought about having one patch with the pitch shift set for the harmonised riff and a separate patch for the lead. That way, you'd only have one button to hit to switch between the two, which you could do pretty quickly. Nice idea...

    Double-Tracking-Wall of Sound-Thread ?????
