Not to s*** on ANYONES parade but ...

Yeah, that ir is almost as classic as Guitarhacks "Thisone" and Catharsis "s-preshigh". For heavy tones and typical Sneapish 5150 tones, I always seem to prefer irs' that has been captured through guitar head power amps. "Neutral" ir's always seems to boxy/too much mid and not as saturated as my...

Announcing the OwnHammer High Gain Essentials

Bought Mesa and ENGL cabs. I was immediately struck by the clarity of the impulses. I have not had much time playing around with them, but first impression is these might be the best high gain irs yet (and I have tried hundreds). Very well done! Edit. They are indeed very clear sounding with...

How much fizz can you get from an Axe? (BM project)

Quite much, if you really want to. Here's a black metal project recorded with the Axe onto a Roland vs 2480 and an old Akai MPC 1000 for drums. Yeah, old dusty hardware FTW.

    ownhammer mix Ir's questions

No, you will have to do it yourself. There is no 'should' but to get the vanilla experience, make sure to turn anything in the cab block off that would otherwise color the sound. I almost never use the mic filters in the cab block with 3rd party ir's but I find the motor drive and room...

Axe FX FW 11b vs Kemper Profiler

Indeed. Given the right combination of guitar and profile, the KPA is capable of some briliant sounds. To me, the Axe is vastly superior when it comes to tweak and create your own sounds.

  31. A

    Axe-Fx II Firmware 11 released!

After playing a couple of minutes it seems the Axe handles open chords on high gain settings better than I can remember; in particular the presence seems better defined and does not as easily gets overbearing. Yeah, early observation which could just as well be Happy-new-firmware-day syndrome.

Can you post any of the clips from your comparison? Would be very interesting to hear the actual difference.
  40. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

Thanks! I will try the patch as soon as I'm back home. Yeah, I've recently been using Jeff's RoS DI since there are so many clips to reference. Bored as hell on the riff though!
  41. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

That's why you don't try to reference your single guitar to a full mix. Right?
  42. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

No doubt does the model match up very well against that particular head. It seems though that there can be quite a difference between different 5150s. I would say that the one in the clip is much more dry sounding compared to my own, which is clearly more wet and saturated. But, as been stated...

    The scooped 5150 tone

Yeah, my starting-point is what I reccon the typical Andy Sneap territory (and how I use my real 5150 as well): Pregain 3-4 Low 5-6 Mid 2.5 High 4-5 Pre 5-7 Res 5-7 Postgain 2-3 It usually takes me pretty close, but I feel that that last bit can't be achieved without the right ir (or some...
  46. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

Yeah, that's a good tone. Did he capture an ir? Anyhow, I will have to check out some Marshall ir's - both 1960A and 1960B. It feels like I've been staring myself blind on mesa lately.
  47. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

Yes, EQ:ing might be inevitable although I hoped for a sikrit ir that would take me there. ;) And it makes me wonder how much post EQ there are on those productions as well as how close you can actually get directly on tape with guitar, amp, cab and mic.
  48. A

    The scooped 5150 tone

Cheers! I've been struggeling for a while (yeah, a pretty long while actually) to get that scooped 5150 metal tone we often attribute to a certain Mr Sneap and bands like Arch Enemy, Machine Head (The Blackening album) etc. It's not that hard getting in the general area, but achieving that...

    axe +motu?

I have the Motu 2408 mkIII and it works pretty well. But, in a direct comparison witht he Axe, it actually lacks some low end and comes out as a tad thin. I have no idea why there's a difference but there is. The only thing I miss myself on the Axe with regards to monitoring is a seperate...
  50. A

    KrK monitors & EQ

Monitoring is difficult. Ears tend to get used to, more or less, any kind of listening environment. According to my (little) experience, references is very important. Find clips of tones you like and try to match the frequency content such as the low end to that.

So you are that kind that allwayyys gets the last word?? ;)
  55. A

    Suddenly I got gain/saturation..?

Yeah, it might be that easy but still... could AE really make that big of a difference? Everything seems both more saturated and a tad more scooped (which I prefer, though).
  56. A

    Suddenly I got gain/saturation..?

Cheers, While I have enjoyed FW 10 and its following updates, I still thought a lot of high gain amps lacked... well gain and saturation. Certainly so when I compared the 6160 block and 6160 II sims with my real 5150 block. When I booted up my Axe an hour ago and started building a preset...

Holy Sh*t! Fredrik Thordendal AXE-FX II Rythm Sound

I would not judge Fredrik or Meshuggah based on that video. Meshuggah in their early days did never appeal to the masses, which was a good thing. Sadly, they turned from anger into technique, and most youngsters recently seems to be influenced by them in one way or the other. That's how we got...

    Firmware Version 10.10 Now Available

Just did a quick test and got to say I'm a bit surprised how far off it seems to the DAR - both how it handles palm mutes as well as the available gain on tap. Boosting sure is a necessity to get any where close. It seems dry in the same manner, though.

    Comparing 6160s

Yeah, for the modern style metal tone (non-djenty) I'm having trouble with the pre installed ir's. I can't get any of them to give me the right amount of scoop, tight bottom end and smooth highs as i get from my real 5150. I get better luck with some third part ir's as Ownhammer and, so far my...

New axefx II owner: High gain patches sound flubby and farty

Exactly; try to keep it below 4 and don't hestitate to go even lower if necessary. Do you boost the amp? Just as in the real world, try put a TS9 in front of the amp. And be sure to check out Ownhammer and Guitarhacks impulses; I can't say that I like the included ir's for modern (non-djenty)...

After the first night of fiddling

    6160 II

2*2 tracks. The patch is very simple - I tried to use about the same settings as I would with a real 5150 head. I had to use a considerably higher preamp setting though. TS9 (Gain 0, Tone 50 and Drive 100), 6160 II (Preamp 5, Bass 5, Mid 3, Treble 5, Presence 6, Depth 5) and Cab block with...

I'm I hearing things? Taking crazy-pills? Placebo effect?

Yeah, the right amount of scoopage certainly is a challenge to me with high gain patches. I can't seem to get there with only amp sims and cabs; I always end up using an eq in the chain. Currently I'm trying out Redwirez impedence curves for some (hopefully) nice results.
  75. A

Just got back from a concert...

Exactly. Chaosphere sounds just as the title, which is a good thing as metal productions these days are way to polished and lack both nerve and atmosphere.
  76. A

Just got back from a concert...

Indeed, Meshuggah is on another level. It took surprisingly long before there surfaced band trying to do what they do, but all of a sudden the internetz is filled with them. Good to see them using Axe live, though they belong to the category that can make anything sound good - including the...

    IR's where to find?

These are new to me. Anyone tried them in a high gain context?
  78. A

    6160/Powerball massive Volume difference!?

Yup, noticed that too. And my 5153 red is even louder that the 6160 II. Having volume matched sims would sure make quick comparisons easier.
  79. A

Clip of a new mix I'm working on. Metal/AxeII/S2.0/TMF

Hard to give a fair comment on my crappy computer speakers but, still, there seem to be some low end resonance on your palm mutes. Either try to filter it with a narrow q or try the Andy Sneap multi comp trick. I would guess it is somewhere in the 200 Hz region. That should clean it up a little.
  80. A

    V10 HIGH GAIN REVIEW

Yeah, I like the new 6160 II sim too but feel there's no way near the same amount of distortion available on the model as compared to the real head (given the same settings). Or is my memory deceiving me?
  81. A

    Derp

Sure, get that woody thing... but only AFTER you profiled the ENGL Savage, Fortin Natas and DAR FBM 100H. Those we NEED.

Metal track with AFXII and new Ownhammer Mesa V30

I'm liking these new Mesa cabs too, might be one of the best packages I've tried so far. A tad early to say, though. Have only played with them for a day... Your clip sounds nice and a good thing to hear some non-djenty metal clips from the Axe. Refreshing. Which amp sim did you use?
  83. A

no complaining...just a question about "saturation"

Yeah, cab ir's makes almost all the difference, no doubt. A "static" saturation behavior would seem logical to come from an ir; good thing you solved it. As a high gain player my self, I've also found the new ir's far from my liking - to much low end content and not enough of high mids. But I...
