The importance of Mono for live guitar playing

When I'm the sound guy, unless I'm starved for channels, I'd rather you send whatever kind of signal you want in your IEMs and let me worry about making space in the FoH mix. I can always pan both channels the same if I need to. <end sound guy advice>

    AXE-FX IV - WISH List

Doesn’t the GM-800 use one of those hex pickups? I’m pretty sure that’d take new hardware. (That said, now support for that is on my wishlist, too.)

What pedalboard is that? I’ve been meaning to put one together for a while, and I’m always on the lookout for something that’ll fit an FM9 with room for a few other pedals.

    Fuzz Pedals

I love fiddling with things, so as a compromise with myself I’ve got like 5 fuzzes in front of my FM9. I still need to get a Fuzz Factory and a few others. No such thing as too many fuzzes 😁

Anyone go direct to FOH without a monitor?

Be careful with that. Playing with one ear out can (not "will", but "can") damage your hearing pretty bad. As I understand it, your brain kinda averages the volume between your ears to decide how loud it thinks something is, so when your ears are getting completely different signals like that...

    FM9 not allowed?

Yep! Nothing. Yeah, I've never heard of a venue with their own PA that wouldn't let you plug the whole band into it. Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard of a venue with their own PA that even had room for you to bring a second "supplemental" PA.

    AXE-FX IV - WISH List

At some point, the DSP and other component manufacturers will move on to newer/better/faster stuff and FAS will have to release an "AxeFX 3 mk3 Ultra Mega Turbo" or something just so they'll be able to continue making their products. Once that's done, there's no reason not to take advantage of...

Yeah, that’s why I rather quickly decided not to get them. I suppose they could come in handy if you have limited depth, though. Like if you have a really wide bridge or something and can’t cut into it for more normal-sized expression pedals. Or they could be the right size for some sort of...

What Prompted You To Buy A Fractal?

It's been fairly clear to me for the past probably decade that, for people who don't have roadies and do have neighbors, modelers were more or less The Way™. Between the online demos, getting to work with a band whose guitarist had an Ultra (it was a long time ago), and a very trusted friend...

    AXE-FX IV - WISH List

I’d love for the foot controllers to have a guitar input so I don’t have to worry about super long 1/4” cables or wireless stuff. Two inputs, really, in case I want to run a stereo thing in front or have a piezo pickup or whatever.

Bands that epitomize a certain amp’s sound

So did they actually mic those amps, or was the vocal mic bleed good enough?
  19. T

    Waitlist Email

That does indeed suck. It’s been my experience that it’s faster & easier to recreate something than to create it in the first place, so it hopefully it won’t take another 2.5 hours. Still sucks though.
  20. T

    Let's see those FM9 rigs!

Yeah, the payouts are a lot lower for “ruining” the gig than they are for burning down the house.
  21. T

    Talk me off the ledge

It doesn’t have to… just bring your amp’s preamp into or out of your signal chain same as any other block. Or get a reactive load box, treat the whole “amp -> load box” chain as an external amp block, run it through a cab block, and go direct.
  22. T

    Talk me off the ledge

Often, yes, but not necessarily… Stage volume takes away some of the FoH engineer’s control since there’s more “noise” competing with the PA. WRT traditional guitar cabs specifically, the main problem is beaming. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard the guitars sound great standing next to...

I need a powered monitor without dsp (no latency)

I know a guy who used that for his… Pod? I don’t remember… I’m pretty sure it was a floor unit, and this would’ve been around the original AxeFX Standard/Ultra timeframe… well, whatever, the point is that it worked great.

    FM3 As Pedalboard with Backline

Sure, yeah, I’d bring something too in that situation. But why would that mean that the OP can’t go directly out their FM3 to the PA, too? They could still plug into the amp for monitoring. It’s the preemptive no that I don’t understand.
  25. T

    FM3 As Pedalboard with Backline

Oh, is that what’s this is about? The PA is only for vocals so you have to bring an amp? I remember doing a gig once where I thought the room was small enough that I didn’t to mic the guitarist’s. He looked at me funny when I suggested I’d just ask him to turn up or down a bit as-needed, but...

    FM3 As Pedalboard with Backline

Wait, what?!? I was a house engineer at a mid-sized venue for 7 years (and a freelance engineer for a decade before that) and cannot fathom preemptively “not allowing” a musician to use their own gear. I’m sure there were a few instances of it not working out, but to the best of my recollection...

Yeah, that’s how I found out it existed.
  30. T

    Waitlist Email

I really doubt it. The only reasons there was a waitlist in the first place are the huge initial demand followed by component shortages. They said the rush of people on the initial waitlist dropped off by about half every day. It should start picking up pretty soon.

Can my xitone wedges replace my PA speakers?

    Let's see those FM9 rigs!

I don’t have one myself, but I know several people who do and that’s about how I’d rate it. The main problem with, AFAIK and IIRC, all of Line6’s wireless stuff is they use the same frequency range as WiFi. This works fine until there’s too much network congestion for them to keep working...

TBH, pedalboards just in general make me a bit nervous… most of stuff on them is neither beer-proof nor cheap.
  39. T

    Weatherproofing

You can add what’s called a “conformal coating” to waterproof the PCB, but I don’t know how to waterproof the switches or sockets. I’d imagine the displays could waterproofed with a properly applied layer of waterproof clear tape, but I’ve never tried it.

Would you be interested in a dust cover?

Heh, kinda, yeah. Wouldn’t bother me, though, if I thought I needed it. It looks like it’s more or less a way to make soft cases hard (at least on one side), which is definitely a neat idea.
  41. T

Would you be interested in a dust cover?

Is this something that’s intended to be left on while you play? All the extra room by the expression pedal makes me think not, but maybe it’s more flexible than it looks.
  42. T

    Why not Rivera?

Hypothetically, if they added a “circuit simulator” block and let you lay it all out virtually, they could do that. Then each “different” amp would be just a different preset for that block and people could just configure whatever amp they want. Honestly, I like to tinker so I’d probably prefer...

Is anyone using their AxeIII just for effects?? And is it overkill?!

Back up all your settings first... If it was me, I'd be way too busy to worry about changing my setup. In theory and if nothing goes wrong, it's fine, but there is such a thing as setting oneself up for failure, tempting fate, etc. Have fun with the gig/move!

Moving Back from Stereo to Mono

Does it, though? More than once when I was a staff engineer at a music venue, I got bored enough (some bands would bring their own monitor rigs so that night my job would be to stand there and look important) to do experiments on LCR vs Stereo, and the extra directionality of the center channel...

    AXE-FX IV - WISH List

A non-technical problem with being able to switch the internal processing on something like an AxeFX between 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, etc modes is that it changes the load per block and therefore the maximum number of blocks. Given that nobody wants to have spreadsheets in their ads, and...

  53. T

Well, I'm all in with FM3!

You're specifically referring to Line 6's modelers? "Garbage" is a strong word... I'd certainly stay away from their Spider amps, as well as the Flextone line. Wish Sitar sim just like in the Boss GT-1000

Both the GT-1000 and GT-1000CORE have MIDI out, which probably means you could use them both as foot controllers for your Axe-FX and for this "sitar" sound. And for an emergency backup in case someone spills their beer on your Axe-FX, I suppose. The non-CORE version even has a built-in...

Am I the Only One Not Using High or Low Cuts Anymore?

80Hz is a common starting point because that's pretty close to the fundamental frequency of the low open string on a six-string guitar in standard tuning (approximately 82.41Hz, IIRC). It's not like these filters are brick-walls, though. HPFs (on audio consoles, anyway) are frequently defined by...

Am I the Only One Not Using High or Low Cuts Anymore?

Backing off the tone knob just a bit on your guitar can also be helpful. The volume knob, too, if your guitar doesn't have a treble-bleed capacitor. It all kinda depends on where the frequencies in the amp's eq section are centered, where the presence knob starts affecting things, etc. This...
  57. T

Am I the Only One Not Using High or Low Cuts Anymore?

Subs are usually driven off an aux buss, so your guitar normally won't get sent to them at all unless the engineer wants to do that. Assuming the "large venues" are large enough to own a good PA and to have it set up correctly, to me the question should be "Why do I need to add lows back in at...
  58. T

Am I the Only One Not Using High or Low Cuts Anymore?

Be sure to let them know if you've already applied a high-pass filter, and if so what frequency it's set to. I usually start soundcheck with a 40Hz-80Hz HPF (depends on tuning and how boomy the stage is), but if you've already done a bunch of EQing I'll cheerfully give your settings a try.

AustinBuddy possible Bass Presets for the Axe-Fx III - what do you want to see?

Oh, yeah, that probably would be an interesting IR. I remember there was this venue near Dallas that a band I was working for played at sometimes. They had these giant folded horn subs sitting on the stage — far bigger than what I was bringing — but no amp for them and no info on their power...

    Rack Suggestions for Axe-Fx III

A good friend of mine back in Dallas bought one of their foam shock-mount amp racks probably well over a decade ago at this point. AFAIK, it hasn't given him any issues. However I haven't worked with his gear in a long time, so I'm not sure I'd know if he'd moved on to something else.

    Vicarious GAS

I still have GAS for them, but they've moved far down on my list of things to get. Specifically, they're all somewhere after "A house way out in the country so I can make tons of noise at all hours without upsetting the neighbors". It'll take me a while to get there. The AxeFX III has enough...

How "Moddable" is the AxeFX (In the "Totally Voids Your Warranty" Sense of the Word)?

Eh, soldering isn't too hard once you get the hang of it. It's knowing what you can do without breaking stuff, or how you can modify a circuit and still have it work, that part can be very hard.
  65. T

    MIDI 2.0

I could get behind RJ-45 being the spec, although if that's the route we're going I'd prefer they work out some licensing deal for etherCON. If 5 pins is enough and they just want to get away from the 5-pin DIN MIDI uses now, there's also a 5-pin XLR connector.
  66. T

How "Moddable" is the AxeFX (In the "Totally Voids Your Warranty" Sense of the Word)?

Haha, yeah, although, to be clear, I wouldn't have done it without clear instructions from either Fractal or someone else who actually knows what they're doing. Repairing sophisticated digital boards "to spec" might not be possible without essentially remaking that part of the board. And as much...

    Three Amp Blocks?

I want it for: Guitar -> Subtlely Stereo Doubler -> (L) Amp 1 | (Dry) Amp 2 | (R) Amp 3 -> Cabs -> mixer to make it stereo -> Verb/Delay/etc Might sound huge... especially if you're going for that "multi-tracked with different amps" thing that some people do in the studio.
  68. T

How "Moddable" is the AxeFX (In the "Totally Voids Your Warranty" Sense of the Word)?

Oh, that works now? I thought in the AxeFX had to be the master clock when using digital connections. Ok, never mind, thanks :-)

Kemper in the Axe-Fx III loop with spdif?

Been thinking about doing the same thing (except probably with an Eleven Rack or something else that's cheaper than a Kemper) for my "5x12 Rig of Ultimate Flexibility" setup, which sadly exists only in my head right now (although, let me tell you, it sounds fantastic there).

How "Moddable" is the AxeFX (In the "Totally Voids Your Warranty" Sense of the Word)?

Specifically, I'm wondering hypothetically, if I was willing to take the risk, how hard would it be to add an external clock input? Not to make it run at something other than 48 kHz, just to have it use an external 48 kHz clock signal instead of the internal clock. I mean, the answer won't...

Case that can mount AXE 2 and store the MFC II with it?

Just for the convenience of having “handles” on your pedalboard and one less rack lid to find a place to hide during the show. If you don’t have a use for the extra rack space, it’s probably not worth it.
  81. T

Case that can mount AXE 2 and store the MFC II with it?

If you get a rack that’s at least 6u tall, the MFC should barely squeeze in the lid. The manual says its footprint is 10”x15.75”, and 6U is 10.5”x19”. Depending on how deep the lip is, that’s only 1/2” of clearance for the cables though, so maybe 8u would be better (well, 7u, but I’ve never seen...

Oh, you don't have to part with them. It's just better for your back if you can figure out how to not bring them to gigs anymore. Also, you can keep two sets of presets... One for using the 4/7CM with your amps, and one for the AxeFX by itself.

Yeah, but you can just as easily use an actual long cable to plug in your receiver, and then if you start having wireless issues you can simply unplug the cable from the receiver and plug it into your guitar.

    1500 bucks, you say, Line6?

As a counter anecdote, I think all but maybe one of the engineers I've worked with have at least heard of AES. But then I tend to hang out with a nerdy crowd, so maybe that's it.
  89. T

    Serious Wireless Woes

Is the DLink set to 5GHz or 2.4GHz? IIRC the Line6 stuff is 2.4GHz, but I haven't looked at their specs in a *long* time, so I could easily be wrong about that. Either way, try setting up your networking gear so it's on whichever band that Line6 doesn't use.

AXE FX seems to turn on my pc :p

    How loud you play?

Also, check the weighting. OSHA's recommendations are based on A-weighting with Slow Response. As an aside, that's a horrible way to measure music's volume for the purposes of determining hearing damage, for two reasons. First, A-weighting ignores low frequencies, which make up so much of...

What USB cable do you favor for Axe-fx II?

Guys, USB is only a transport mechanism. There are three, and only three ways it can affect your sound. 1) it doesn't perform to spec 2a) it does perform to spec, but the bus doesn't have enough bandwidth for your signal (which isn't really the cable's fault) 2b) you're using a USB 1 cable on a...
