Home Studio….How Did You Learn the Ropes?

Hands on mostly. I recorded a lot at pro studios in the 80s. I became friends with engineers and some deveoplers of high end mic pres. I asked questions a LOT. Luckily everyone was kind and helpful. But I started with a 4 track portastudio and drums machine for writing. Graduated to a midi...

FS Audio Ease Altiverb 7 - $479 OBO (License Transfer)

I really dig reverbs. I have a bunch of great hardware outboard reverbs like Bricasti and three Lexicons. I have UAD as well, but because I have those other hardware reverbs I don't own the Capital or Chambers but I love the UAD EMT plates. I also like the Relab LX480 and all of their stuff...

Wow. That's really just about the absolute best of the software reverbs. That's my favorite anyway, and I own most of them.

    No Xitone love these days?

Mick's great. My guess is he gets overwhelmed. I bought a SECOND PAIR last year. It took a little longer as they're hand built but well worth the wait if you can afford to.

DIY Bass Traps? Yes or no?

Well no. Frequencies are handled with bass traps. But it will do little for sounds overall abatement. GreenGlue is useless AFAIC. I don't know about QuietRock. But to lessen sound escaping you need to trap the sound waves with an airgap. There are other ways but at the end of the day it...

DIY Bass Traps? Yes or no?

You own the home. If this is your music room I''d suggest applying a secind layer of drywayy with an air between the two. You have to try to not let the two drywall's touch. It's more effort and money but the dividends will seriously pay off.

DIY Bass Traps? Yes or no?

Bass traps won't help with sound abatement, but maybe that's been pointed out already.

Traveling on plane with cabs - XiTone wedge?

Anyone travel with FRFR cabs?I have a gig. Gotta jump on a plane with my guitar and FM9. I’ll have the house system do my sound and monitor. But I like two XiTones for my regular gigs. I can get away with just one. Those things are built so solid, I was wondering if anyone ever just put them in...

    Axe III Upgrade

I will say this, Metric Halo is about the only company I know that makes "future proof" hardware. I have several of their interfaces and they are ALL upgradeable. They've each gone through about 7 upgrades. I buy a kit and am given instructions and a video. Remove screws, pop the lid, remove...

What should I buy first? A good guitar or the FM3?

Well into the first half of my guitar playing life I never practiced with an amp. Probably because I was very shy about my playing, I got into the habit of practicing electric guitar without an amp. This meant I could play any time day or night and not disturb anyone. I could get my chops...

What should I buy first? A good guitar or the FM3?

I always say the most important line goes from the source on down. YOU, the player is the source, then the next order of importance is the guitar. Then the amp, speakers etc.

    My FM9 arrived!!!

I’m at the airport flying home! I can’t wait. But in the time of my vacation I sold two items on reverb so REALLY the first thing I have to do is pack a AX8 and LF+12+ before I can’t really play. I already sold the FM3! Maybe one of those items will fit the FM9 box??

Can someone help explain this to me? Losing my mind again here.

Yeah. I was thinking this as I was typing the above. Listening to yourself is a far different experience than listening to someone else. I also see this when recording my band in the studio. I rarely hear myself as I can later while playing it back. Good or bad it’s different. EQ sounds...
  28. henryrobinett

Can someone help explain this to me? Losing my mind again here.

Here’s another example. I’ll tell it on myself. And it’s not about being a better or worse player. Sometimes it’s just about how you PULL the sound out with your left and right hands. Many years ago I bought a Mesa/Boogie Quad, a light Randall power amp going into a pair of 12” Celestians. I...

Can someone help explain this to me? Losing my mind again here.

I am amazed how many people discount technique has THE MAJOR factor for deferences in sound. Yes gear is very important but mainly it’s in HOW the guitar is played. How much pressure is exerted from the fretting hand and the pick. There are SO MANY VARIABLES. I‘ve heard people sit in on the SAME...

  32. henryrobinett

Sticking with the FM3? Upgrading to FM9? Why?

I have the Axe Fx III racked in the studio, FM3 and now just got the FM9. I sold an FM3. I actually had two. I have a band and a studio. I set up the bass rig with a FM3 and XiTone powered wedge. So I’m still hanging on to that one. I still have a AX8 I hope to sell. But I think the FM3 is a...

  34. henryrobinett

I did a bad bad thing.

Yes! I’ve been lulled into carelessness because I have SO MANY multiple back up systems on my Mac: Time Machine, Blaze cloud, Carbon Copy Cloner. But I forget that Fractal is immune to that. I need to add another manual back up routine, say every Sunday or every night! Dang.

I did a bad bad thing.

  38. henryrobinett

I did a bad bad thing.

So stupid. I sold my FM3 on reverb. Yay! I was deleting my user presets in preparation for packing. Buying FM9. Yay! Unfortunately I also had both FM3-Edit and AxeIII-Edit open. I shift clicked and deleted the user presets for Axe Fx III instead of FM3. As soon as I hit save I realized what I...

    FM3 Factory reset?

Anyone know the weight and dimensions of the AX8?

Good to know. I'm a little slow. I'm selling the AX8, FM3 AND a LF+12+. Man. With a FM9 on the way! LOL. Sometimes I'm the king of procrastination! But not when it really counts! Thank you.
  41. henryrobinett

Anyone know the weight and dimensions of the AX8?

I'm getting ready to sell on reverb. It's a heavy sucker. It's been a while since I pulled it out! Anyone know the weight? Thanks!

Bricasti m7 reverb vs the axefx3?

Absolutely. I own a Bricasti too. I mix with it all the time and use it with a few Lexicons. I might use those on guitar instead of the Axe Fx, but if I'm playing live or in the studio with the band I'm using the Fx reverb. It sounds great.

What Kind Of Music Do You Play? How Do You Practice?

Jazz. A lot of original fusion but lately I've just been playing a lot of bop, jazz standards. I practice 4 hours a day. That's up from a few years ago of 3 hours. When I was in my teens and 20s it was 6 hours a day. I have a pretty stringent routine. I feel like I'm starting to make some...

  49. henryrobinett

    Wish Axe FX at 96k

I not going to frigging argue this stupid debate. I can hear the difference regardless nyquist and null tests. If you have high end interfaces and sample rate conversion you can hear it. I don't mean to insult anyne at all, but please, this is not part of the thread, or shouldn't be.
  50. henryrobinett

    Wish Axe FX at 96k

I hear you. But the LAST thing I want is another DAW. There has got to be another solution.
  51. henryrobinett

    Wish Axe FX at 96k

But Reaper is a DAW. Doesn't it require hardware for sample rate conversion? I already have and use Digital Performer, which does automatic aggregation. YOu can use as many interfaces as you want but they're all stuck at the hardware sample rate, Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton 11.

    Wish Axe FX at 96k

I don't understand this. Having a DAW that can change isn't the issue. Having an interface that can do different sample rates isn't either. I have many devices - effects boxes and reverbs that have to match the sample rate. Bricasti and Lexicon PCM92 reverbs. THEY have to match the rate of...
  57. henryrobinett

    Wish Axe FX at 96k

No. I record almost exclusively at 96k. It's a real problem. Reamping analog creates hiss. A little hiss but hiss nonetheless. I'm 100% behind the OP. I wish they allowed for multiple sample rates. I accept it's a problem, but still.

How does everyone learn new songs?

Cool question. I'm a jazz guy so my answer might be different than a lot of folks. Generally I'm familiar with the song, perhaps a jazz standard or something. Unless it's an original by me or someone else, I try to do a similar approach. First I memorize the melody, unless I don't play it...

    SetList (Lack Of) Frustration

I got it, kind of. But it seems like a simpler approach works for me better anyway. 4 presets with various scenes. I don't play in a cover band and haven't for 40 years! LOL. But for me clean rhythm, dirty rhythm with lead scene and delay; clean jazz, overdrive, gets me through the night...

    SetList (Lack Of) Frustration

IDK. Not much of a problem. Granted I don't play but 2-3 gigs a month after pandemic. But it's easy enough to arrange the banks per gig. And there's a hell of a lot of room to have multiple settings. I design the sets myself, so it's pretty easy, even if I change my mind regarding th...

  71. henryrobinett

    Outdoor gigs and led screen

Well no. I should have been more specific. The screen for two of the switches disappeared where the others did not. So it apparently had nothing to do with the position of my head. he cloth covering idesa was to protect the screen while I'm NOT using it. Before and after sound check, breaks.
  72. henryrobinett

    Outdoor gigs and led screen

Thank you. I have an outdoor gig this Saturday. I'll probably just throw some cloth over it until I need to see the screen. In northern California where I am it's consitently been in the 100s. So it's bound to be a problem.
  73. henryrobinett

  96. henryrobinett

    Ring Modulator won't bypass

I have it plugged in now. However on my xe III, which this preset came from, I can have the pedal plugged in or not and I can still bypass it. Regardless of the scene selected where it is bypassed on the FM3 there's simply no way I can see to turn it off, pedal or not.
