So I got to play with NileRodgers last night at Grammys On The Hill and I took a picture of his Fender Deville’s settings. His production manager Nick carried a picture and always adjusts the amp to these settings. I know we dont have a Deville on FAS systems yet, but just in case we get em in...
..."Glitter" companion...I'm a big fan of Cory Wong and Mark Lettieri's rhythmic playing and really want more of that percussive style! And NileRodgers, wow...
I find the Kiesel Osiris 6X w/Fishman Fluence Moderns to get my favorite cleans, so that was used along with Axe Fx Archer presets. I...
...belong in the Axe-FX III, you have a limited view of guitar tones. Led Zeppelin's Black Dog, Rush's Time Stand Still, a lot of the NileRodgers stuff, and Steely Dan's reeling in the years all went guitar to mic pre to tape- no amp or cab involved. Tube pre just doesn't give the same flavor...
...thank God I came to my senses!
Looking through the factory presets, there are so many that nail the tones of the respective guitarists: NileRodgers, Andy Summers, Neal Schon, Tom Scholz, Steve Lukather, the Buckaroos' Don Rich, Steve Stevens... even my childhood hero Johnny Marr!
But to the...
Assuming I can use control switches for boost and compressor in the amp block and save a block or 2. Any tips for compressor in general, with amp? Mainly just need for my NileRodgers funk clean. Thanks in advance!
...fusion, electronic, dance, etc. Never limiting myself to a specific type, it just needs to sound good to my ears and in my bones:) NileRodgers was especially a favorite, his percussive use of tiny chords (I believe Mark Lettieri coined that!) and syncopated rhythm playing has always blown...
...years ago using the IIC+... go figure, I never would've done that on my own. Has just a little bite to it, and sounds fantastic. But sometimes I want totally super really clean, like for some 80's type chorus tones, or some other kinds of funk like NileRodgers' straight-into-the-board style.
...setup.
Those things feel a bit counter to each other.
No saying you can't or shouldn't use that IR, as there are definitely use cases where it makes sense.
You might use it (without Amp block) for a funk sound ala NileRodgers or (maybe) with an Amp block for that '80s "pristine clean".
It seems to be obvious that you have to use the clean DI signal in order to achieve that famous NileRodgers Chic Funk Sound. I just wonder if it could make Funk Guitar Parts more crispy if you record at the same time the guitar with a microphone very close to the guitar to get more of the sound...
Reading an article right now about NileRodgers being totally hooked on the Strat Acoustasonics through a 10" Champ. I guess it does fit his style a little. Have to take into account that he's an endorser for Fender, so ....
...chords. But when I started playing more dynamically I could really start to feel and hear the difference.
It seems to me like the more percussively/aggressively you play the more the differences become apparent.
Playing some NileRodgers style funk on the Band-Commander is an amazing...
Yeah, that early Duran Duran stuff some great parts all over the place, especially for bass. That NileRodgers influence on those recordings is great IMO.

If you try to play the song as is, then the solo should be played as is as well. No improvisation allowed. Don't like it, don't do it that way. If you want to improvise the solo, play a loose version of the song, like you just learned it 15 minutes before the show started, because you will get...
...resemblance to Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Reeves Gabrels, Mick Ronson, SRV, Peter Frampton, Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard, NileRodgers, Mick Wayne, or David Bowie (who played many great guitar parts himself). I work very hard to recreate their tones and performances, but I don't...
...I always thought the in-between positions sounded off with an HSH config as opposed to a 3 SC set-up. This amp works for me for NileRodgers type of playing and ''pop corn'' poppy lines. So far that's the closest I could come to a more tradionnal Strat / Blackface setting. Anyone has a...
...some fantastic guitar tones that were recorded straight to the desk. Gilmore did the solo to Another Brick in the Wall that way (they did also blend in a real amp as well). Lots of clean guitar tracks over the years have been recorded that way. NileRodgers did some epic stuff direct to the desk.
...of the time I play dirt tones, classic rock, pop rock with occasional shimmering cleans. Earlier this year I started playing in a Chic/NileRodgers cover band with more clean tones.
I've started to be a bit dissatisfied with the ASM as I recently bought a Yamaha DX10r and was delighted with...
You're pretty spot on and exact in fact!
Yet, some stuff aka...NileRodgers, EWF, Commodores ...Slave, Starship, Wild Cherry, Skank and Isley Brothers...etc....gave me headaches matching the tones back in those days!
That chorus brings up a bit of Chic / NileRodgers. If you haven't seen the documentary on Netflix check it out. https://www.netflix.com/title/81001381 great show.
Thanks again Leon always good stuff.
Still real happy with my ASM. Gigged with it the other week and really dug the tone. Chic/NileRodgers-esque band so mainly Fender cleans with a few leads
My lovely wife and I went to see NileRodgers do his thang last Friday night. It was an excellent gig.
Nile’s playing was effortless, although surprisingly modest in the mix - I was expecting his funk chops to be more to the fore. In fact he gave equal billing to the vocalists, bass, keys and...

...from scratch when we were working on a bass rig for one of our most celebrated endorsers. Intended uses include adjusting a DI and/or IR with Mic Distance, or combining DI and IRs into the same virtual preamp and room sim (which as Ian mentioned above, gets you a pretty great NileRodgers...
I've used FLAT in presets on the II where I wanted the CAB block's preamp but not a cabinet simulation. Works great for that "guitar straight into a console" type of thing ala NileRodgers.
...Is there a way to make sure the Wah cannot engage in Scene 1?
This past weekend we were playing a song that requires a very funky, NileRodgers, guitar tone. When I turned on that preset it had a lot of upper mids and treble that were ear-piercing. It took me about five seconds to figure out...
Hey all,
Is there maybe someone who dailed in a great NileRodgers tone? I dailed in one myself but I am curious to hear what other people's patches sound like.
Here's mine:
Regards from The Netherlands!
Jos
I like the tube pre, when it has to be squeaky clean like NileRodgers or Another Brick in the Wall
Being a british flavour kind of guy, I actually also love the JM45 for its cleans (I changed tubes to EF86 and KT88 IIRC). The Dirty Shirley will do similar cleans. When I am in the mood for...

can u share your best compressor settings for the following scenarios - ( incl which compressor u are using
1. clean picked chords
2. nilerodgers/chic funk
3. slide
4. clean solo to add fullness/sustain
5. lead tones for a smoother feel
Specifically for NileRodgers sounds, I would start with the "Tube Pre" amp model and no cab - Nile would often go straight to the desk, which is exactly what the Tube pre emulates. You need a little compression to go with that. I would start with Pedal Comp 1, but the studio comp should also be...
I was actually looking to tone math NileRodgers last night now you mention it. I couldn't find any master/islolation tracks though.
Personally I like the Vibrolux for my Mark Knopfler style sounds. I even paired it with a Mesa cab which i'm sure is a no no in the real world and I guess it won't...
...So... I run a preset per song, and they are dialed using the weapon of choice. This is one of the great powers of the power of the Axe to me. I can be Richie Sambora one minute (with his rig) and NileRodgers the next with his rig...
But my favorite is to be me... with my rig... and I get...
...and key in a clean sound in parallel with the amp simulation.
Actually it's been a known trick to run a guitar straight to a mixer, NileRodgers (Chic), a lot of Michael Jackson recordings, not that the mixers also added a little bit colorization to the clean guitar signal. But for live use...
...to create an ultra-funky clean tone for a particular tune.
Messed with compressors, various amp models, EQ, etc. etc.
Then I remembered NileRodgers's trick. He mixes a clean amp with a direct-input signal.
So I switched to my usual clean tone (58F Tweed), and split the signal behind the...
I thought this might make a good thread that can live for awhile as a sort of reference thread (if it takes off.)
Who has the funk?
Any NileRodgers or Al McKay fans out there, and if so, what is your setup?
Post presets or clips if you will, and let's see who has the best funk tones going.
NileRodgers - Le Freak
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour (album)
Jeff Beck - live at BB King's Blues Club and Grille (album, especially A Day In The Life)

How did you record your guitar on the classic Chic records?
It was mostly my guitar on the neck pickup, direct into a Neve console with some compression, with maybe a touch of miked amp blended in. Onstage, Bernard...
When I think of the NileRodgers - "direct into the console" sound or think of the ways you use the Axe Fx for an acoustic guitar - why not a vintage NEVE Preamp (since we already got a neutral tube preamp...?
No, cabinet modeling active on both clips. I said that i was using cab sims off in a few presets (maybe 2 or 3) and yes all of them are clean sounds, i should had made that clear
...you bypass cabinet modeling that people consider weird. Given the type of tone and playing, I can see where the amp modeling on/off would give a different flavor, but not cab sims unless you're doing the ultra clean NileRodgers thing. Were either of those clips without cabinet simulations?
...as the JC120, lends itself to such an approach. Pure clean sounds *can* sound great without cabs/mics.
The famous "Chic" sound is an example. When NileRodgers recorded his famous filtered tone by combining a Twin Reverb (IIRC) with a dry direct signal.
I think Prince has done the same on...
...as a guitarist and back up singer for Michael Jackson to pursue a record deal for his own music - don't know if that's true.
I consider NileRodgers a class A funks guitarist, listen to his work with Chic Le Freak, some might say it's disco, but to me he is applying funk to disco.
Apart...
Yes, I turn off reverb and delay on more then a couple of songs (especially anywhere I'm playing NileRodgers stuff :) .... and it keeps volume consistent. Plus, it saves me one horizontal block space by having the delay and reverb in line vertically.
Also, its slightly a mental thing too. I...
Then why am I hearing more distortion when I play v14 as opposed to v13? I am not struggling with the Axe. I have had it since v1. I am getting the sounds I want but should not be having to make so many under the hood adjustments to get a simple clean Fenderish sound.
I have never once in...
...as clean from your real amps is not as clean as you think and I believe you are struggling with the axefx because you are trying to capture the "in the room" clean amp vs. "recorded" clean amp.
There's a reason why guys like NileRodgers recorded almost all the time direct to the mixing board.
...you or how do you set up your presets for playing funk? As a reference I would like to have a clean guitar sound like Jamiroquai or NileRodgers or something similar but most important - funky.
I suppose a standard is a single coil and maybe sometimes turning the volume on the guitar a bit...
Follow your ears! :)
If you like that Niles Rodgers clean sound, these might actually be perfect for you. I know someone was looking for a Niles sound in another thread a few days ago.
I never really bonded with the filtered output of my PGA-04, which is what these IRs are capturing, so I...
...for disco using the neck pickup of my EBMM Silhouette Special with the volume and tone rolled back just a hair into a Fender Tremolux model with an Ownhammer IR. For live he goes through various clean amps including Fender. For tips on his playing style search YouTube "Nile Rodgers masterclass".
It's funny, some people only focus on the two guys in Daft Punk wearing weird suits.....while not even mentioning Niles Rodgers, who is one of the main reasons for the success of many groups.
Yeah, even just looping a quick chord thing with the Axe, something that's different to what you'd normally doing. Even just looping one fairly neutral sounding chord (or even just a single note) in a droney kind of way, so there's no inherent jazzy/bluesy/whatever style about it, no particular...
Tackle a different genre, put on a drum beat and jam. With the band I'm in now I'm forced to learn lots of disco funk stuff like Niles Rodgers. This has opened up a whole new world for me and my rythm playing has improved immensely, similarily in my previous band we played some blues and I got...
There are some thoughts about EQ on a Kemper video: Signature Tones with the Kemper Profiler: NileRodgers Style - YouTube. I gave it a quick try, using a 65 Bassman preset, but think it still needs a bit of work.
Painful to split the 70s and 80s.
I went 70s for the diversity, it was the decade of Queen, Led Zep, Floyd, Return to Forever, Rush, Yes, Steely Dan, the Eagles, the Sex Pistols, the Police, Van Halen, and Chic (NileRodgers = awesome).
...my style of guitar is basically what hits at that moment. so one second i might want something like Meshuggah the next i might want NileRodgers meets Andy Summers at a Depeche Mode gig. and to be able to record these tones without have to pack up and drive down to the rehearsal space would...
NileRodgers uses Japanese-made Tokai Strat replicas (really good guitars) with Music Man amps,
or direct into the board. He plays mainly on the 2nd position (Bridge & Middle PU, out of phase).
All his effects are post production tricks (like gating his guitar track for use as a trigger for...
Smilefan thanks once again for the update, can't wait to try them out.
Have you ever tried the emulate a Niles Rodgers funky sound, I think he went straight into the desk and through a twin ( I'm probably wrong)?
Looking for NileRodgers' signature tone (Chic, Sister Sledge).
As heard in this clip for ex.: Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You - YouTube
Heavily filtered, like no cab was used.
...bass-tone-needs/wants?!?
Half-true - LOL! Yes, the "spanky-clean-sound" of going direct (with a little compression probably) was NileRodgers' recipe for dance/funk-guitar perfection on tracks like "Le Freak" by Chic! (...as well as by countless other guitarists/producers I'm sure!)...
...like no dly, lower cho & rev; change rev type.
But I got sidetracked and loved it already with some adjustments.
A friend of mine and NileRodgers fan mentioned to me that Nile would use one amp projecting into the open back of another one in front??
He's not that knowledgable, so maybe he's...
