So I got to play with Nile Rodgers last night at Grammys On The Hill and I took a picture of his Fender Deville’s settings. ...fusion, electronic, dance, etc. Never limiting myself to a specific type, it just needs to sound good to my ears and in my bones:) Nile Rodgers was especially a favorite, his percussive use of tiny chords (I believe Mark Lettieri coined that!) and syncopated rhythm playing has always blown...

    Clean? Or really clean?

...years ago using the IIC+... go figure, I never would've done that on my own. Has just a little bite to it, and sounds fantastic. But sometimes I want totally super really clean, like for some 80's type chorus tones, or some other kinds of funk like Nile Rodgers' straight-into-the-board style.

DI Box to get better tones from the Axe-Fx

...setup. Those things feel a bit counter to each other. No saying you can't or shouldn't use that IR, as there are definitely use cases where it makes sense. You might use it (without Amp block) for a funk sound ala Nile Rodgers or (maybe) with an Amp block for that '80s "pristine clean".

Is a clean DI signal really the best way to record funk guitar parts?

It seems to be obvious that you have to use the clean DI signal in order to achieve that famous Nile Rodgers Chic Funk Sound. I just wonder if it could make Funk Guitar Parts more crispy if you record at the same time the guitar with a microphone very close to the guitar to get more of the sound...

Why do people criticize guitar covers or band covers?

If you try to play the song as is, then the solo should be played as is as well. No improvisation allowed. Don't like it, don't do it that way.
