New Mac Pro coming in the fall

You might want to see it the other way round: the monitor would normally cost 6k, but the stand is optional for those who'd use the VESA anyway, so they SAVE 1k. It seems from the specs the monitor competes with 40k competitors, so I'd calm down a bit...

*FREE* Far-Field Session #2 Cab Pack for Axe-Fx Users

They sound fine, but as I seem to be sensitive to comb filters I like Jay's more (although the speaker he used in the "free" IRs would not be my favourite). I hope somebody (Jay himself, Fractal, ...) will come out with a really reflection free set of IRs of some classic speakers/ cabs. It seems...

As of May 2019, what are the current fave Axe-Fx III FRFR cabs?

I had (myself or tried): FBT Verve 12mA (unusable without heavy EQ) QSC K10 (workable, but far from nice) RCF NX12 (and 10) SMA (good) Dynacord AXM12a (great) Mission Gemini (unusable and shrill, I suspect it was broken) BlueAmps Spark (ok but overly hyped here in Germany IMO) Atomic CLR MkII...

  17. merlin17

Atomic CLR Neo MK2 vs Friedman ASM-10?

I have/ had a lot of FRFRs (sans the Friedmans), the CLR is the winner for me. Putting it up some (on a pole e.g.) and switching it to free field is absolutely killer (the developer himself recommends that positioning).
  18. merlin17

    Turbosound TFM122M-AN

IMO yes. Not playing Metal though...
  19. merlin17

    Turbosound TFM122M-AN

The Dynacord is 90 degrees... As I now also own a CLR (also 90 degrees) I can directly compare them and the CLR wins for me soundwise by a little bit. The feature set of the Dynacord is better though.
  20. merlin17

    Turbosound TFM122M-AN

    The dispersion wouldn't do it for me. "Nominal Dispersion 60° H x 40° V @ -6 dB points"

Gemini 1 vs Gemini 2 for Axe-Fx III

A friend brought a mono Gemini to my studio to check it out. It had a little hum all the time (more so when BT was on) and sounded very brittle. I think it was broken (though new)... Sorry, can't help you with the mono/stereo version comparison.

Thanx, Cliff! This is something special! I just updated and played my standard Bassmann patch through my new CLR and it's awesome!

Blind Test #1: Axe-Fx III vs. Real Amp

1&2 are the same take (at least the same recorded take) and sound more present. The other 3 are the same alternate take and a bit more muffled in comparison. Not a difference that couldn't easily be eq'd. The sound character is almost identical otherwise IMO.

Inexpensive active FRFRs: Headrush1212, Laney LFR112, QSC CP8, ISP FS8...

Kind of. That's not really a fair comparison, but the Laney holds up pretty well. It's a bit more bass heavy and has a slight dip in the mids. It may "feel" more like a guitar cab for some. I just sold my Laney because I could get the CLR for a good price, otherwise I would have kept it.

    Is CLR my best option

Regarding the Gemini: I had one for testing at my studio yesterday and I suspect something was broken (I can't believe it behaved as it was intended by Mission - if so: it's bad...). There was either ground hum or squealing (ground lift switched on and off), Bluetooth leaks into the amp and it...

    Slight ‘out of phase’ sound

    Slight ‘out of phase’ sound

Beware you can only link odd to even channels on the X32 (9-10, 11-12 etc. will work, 10-11 will not). Also check that HA config is checked under link preferences, otherwise the polarity flip is independent from the link status...

Dual Recto with the LB-2 vs the Axe-Fx III and more

In your last comparison where you play the chords (13:38) I'm hearing the notes of the chords clearly in the Recto recordings, in all the modelers I mainly hear the fizz and the notes disappear. In the Recto it sounds similar to a Tube Screamer where there's a clean attack in parallel with the...

  44. merlin17

Dual Recto with the LB-2 vs the Axe-Fx III and more

Interesting how the chordnotes in the last part disappeared in all of the modelers (the AXE III being the best but still a good bit away from the amp).
  45. merlin17

Anyone try the Laney LFR 112?

I have one. I can only compare it to my Dynacord AXM-12a (which compared nicely with a CLR and a RCF NX12-SMA): It's great! Not quite as flat as the Dynacord, but close and fun to play as it "thumbs" a bit more.
  46. merlin17

    Looking for a Power Amp

The PS170 should be perfect for you, especially when you're using it at home and maybe sometimes bedroom levels as you can compensate with the onboard EQ.

    Laney LFR-112

I've been testing that little beast for the last few days and I'm quite impressed! You can adjust the treble which could be useful under some circumstances, but...

    Tap tempo issue

    Ok, thanx, good to hear!
  57. merlin17

    Tap tempo issue

IMO it takes the set tempo into account, so to get from a set tempo of e.g. 100bpm to a desired tempo of 200bpm you have to tap quite a few times. I'll check that tomorrow, but I had the impression that it is like that...
  58. merlin17

    Introduce a ‘coloured’ active speaker

Yes. But in regards to guitar response one tends to put too much bass in the tones when playing alone (worse if playing at bedroom levels) and then get buried (or muddy up) when the other instruments kick in. But what's killing my hearing on stage is overly trebly sounds at high SPL and their...

    Introduce a ‘coloured’ active speaker

I can't believe that the TT08 is very coloured, I suspect your other options are the ones that are less flat than the RCF. That's even a step up from the NX-x-SMA series which are pretty flat... maybe the HF driver in your TT08 is broken?

Review: Dynacord Axm-12a used as modeller-monitor

The CLR may be a tiny bit clearer, but the Dynacord holds up to it pretty well. I'd put it between the RCF NX-12SMA and the CLR soundwise. All three are perfectly suitable. And the Dynacord is lighter, smaller and has more options than the other two. And of course it's available in Europe...

    Wish Tap Tempo last two

Hi! Would it be possible to implement the tap to calculate the tempo from the last two taps? It seems it averages all taps and ramps up or down from the nominal tempo at this point. That's mostly too slow for my needs, and as the switches are fairly loud I'd rather have it react faster...

    Thoughts on Dynacord AXM 12A?

The Dynacord is great! The CLR may be a tiny bit better, but it's also heavier and the Dynacord has some great options. I had both and sold the CLR. I don't know the Xitone and the Yamaha, so I can't compare. I also had the K10, it can't compete with the Dynacord at all.
