Review: Dynacord Axm-12a used as modeller-monitor

The Dynacord sounds a little bit more „narrow“, but not much. I prefer the CLR but wouldn’t hesitate to use the Dynacord if I had to (I still have both).

Review: Dynacord Axm-12a used as modeller-monitor

Frequency response seems to be different and the EV doesn’t have delay in its specs AFAIK.

What's the weirdest guitar you own?

Not really weird but AFAIK extremely rare: a Gibson CS Peter Frampton LP Special (3 P90s). It has a pilot run serial number, I don’t know if it ever went into regular production at all.

New Suhr has "dead" notes :(

I have a Tokai LS3 that has a dead spot on C# on the low E-string (much less on the same note A-string, frets and setup are perfect). I had a Furch Red Master's Choice acoustic where the low G would almost immediately turn into its 5th. I returned that. Most acoustic guitars have some kind of...

    Best Powered FRFR Monitor

Well, I can't do that anymore since I neither have the Verve nor the RCF anymore. You should be able to hear which is truer to the direct (line-out into ProTools) recording though. My (limited) measuring capabilities showed what my ears heard: the Verve's frequency response was all over the...

    Dynacord AXM 12a FRFR...any tips/ advice

Here's my old comparison between the RCF and the FBT (without EQ), the direct signal and the FBT with EQ. Wedges miked AFAIR with a ECM8000 about 1m away center. I seem to be not able to share the playlist, so go in there and you'll find three files...

    Best Powered FRFR Monitor

The Verve is "coloring". I was the one that did the corrective EQ IR. It was unusable without it. The CLR is as flat as it probably gets, Dynacord 2nd, RCF 3rd. (from those I personally know).

Xitone 12” active wedge or Atomic CLR for FRFR wedge

I had a FRFR cab that was said to be FRFR "but not as harsh as most PA wedges". It even won some shootouts in guitar mags. It wasn't FRFR, it was boomy and the treble was warm but not clear and down a few db from 3kHz up. Sounds didn't translate to any PA. Sold it. Bought two CLRs, perfect...

Haven't tried the settings comparing volume, sorry. I have one and played a lot through it. It's great!
  46. merlin17

    CLR on speaker stand, anyone?

I tried two on top of each other. Didn't work for me as the wide dispersion leads to interference (comb filtering) and destroys the otherwise perfect sound. IMO they have to be spaced/angled accordingly.
  47. merlin17

    Dynacord AXM-12A with AX8

How I finally got great tone from the Axe-Fx III at gig volumes - RTFM

I'm not sure why the hipass on the tops would lessen the mids (as it should affect bass response to max. 150Hz IMO and if at all strengthen the mids and clear them up a bit), but I've had my exprerience with FBT, so everything is possible... ;-) A 12" sub with a 12" top is an interesting...

*FREE* Far-Field Session #2 Cab Pack for Axe-Fx Users

They sound fine, but as I seem to be sensitive to comb filters I like Jay's more (although the speaker he used in the "free" IRs would not be my favourite). As of May 2019, what are the current fave Axe-Fx III FRFR cabs?

I had (myself or tried): FBT Verve 12mA (unusable without heavy EQ) QSC K10 (workable, but far from nice) RCF NX12 (and 10) SMA (good) Dynacord AXM12a (great) Mission Gemini (unusable and shrill, I suspect it was broken) BlueAmps Spark (ok but overly hyped here in Germany IMO) Atomic CLR MkII...

Atomic CLR Neo MK2 vs Friedman ASM-10?

I have/ had a lot of FRFRs (sans the Friedmans), the CLR is the winner for me. Putting it up some (on a pole e.g.) and switching it to free field is absolutely killer (the developer himself recommends that positioning).

    Turbosound TFM122M-AN

IMO yes. Not playing Metal though...
  67. merlin17

    Turbosound TFM122M-AN

The Dynacord is 90 degrees... As I now also own a CLR (also 90 degrees) I can directly compare them and the CLR wins for me soundwise by a little bit. The feature set of the Dynacord is better though.
  68. merlin17

Gemini 1 vs Gemini 2 for Axe-Fx III

A friend brought a mono Gemini to my studio to check it out. It had a little hum all the time (more so when BT was on) and sounded very brittle. I think it was broken (though new)... Sorry, can't help you with the mono/stereo version comparison.

Blind Test #1: Axe-Fx III vs. Real Amp

1&2 are the same take (at least the same recorded take) and sound more present. The other 3 are the same alternate take and a bit more muffled in comparison. Not a difference that couldn't easily be eq'd. The sound character is almost identical otherwise IMO.
  72. merlin17

Ex's and Oh's solo distortion settings

Yep, that's how I do it, too. Fuzz and Ringmodulator set for octave down to taste.
  73. merlin17

Inexpensive active FRFRs: Headrush1212, Laney LFR112, QSC CP8, ISP FS8...

Kind of. That's not really a fair comparison, but the Laney holds up pretty well. It's a bit more bass heavy and has a slight dip in the mids. It may "feel" more like a guitar cab for some. I just sold my Laney because I could get the CLR for a good price, otherwise I would have kept it.

    Is CLR my best option

Regarding the Gemini: I had one for testing at my studio yesterday and I suspect something was broken (I can't believe it behaved as it was intended by Mission - if so: it's bad...). 93. merlin17

Anyone try the Laney LFR 112?

I have one. I can only compare it to my Dynacord AXM-12a (which compared nicely with a CLR and a RCF NX12-SMA): It's great! Not quite as flat as the Dynacord, but close and fun to play as it "thumbs" a bit more.
  94. merlin17

You can adjust the treble which could be useful under some circumstances, but...
