Ok great. Curious about some sound clips.

    FM3 Firmware Version 9.00

That’s cool! How does it sound? Do you have to attach modifiers to it, like you previously had to do to get an envelope filter sound? Or does it work straight out of the box?

That Axe fx clip sounds really wobbly indeed.

Any word on pitch shifting updates/improvements for cleans & bass?

What kind of things are doing on bass with the pitch shifter that the Axe fx/FM has trouble with? Can you give some specific examples ?

    Firmware Releases

Only update if there is something in it that you really want and can’t do without. That saves you time and avoids constant tweaking of your presets, which means more time for playing. But it’s up to you.

I am still on Axe fx II. The fact that it isn’t updated anymore also gives some rest. You have to do it with what you’ve got. No constant preset tweaks anymore because of new FW changes and so. No wishes. This is what it is. That means more time for playing. There is something to say for that...

I think you are speaking for yourself. In 5 years time or so when the IV is out people will say the same about the Axe fx III and most Axe fx III owners will buy the IV. Like I said there is always room for improvement and no unit is final.
  10. Bodde

Famous users of the amp modeling.

Not all of them use it for live amp modelling though. Petrucci and Vai use it for fx only I think? A lot of famous touring guys do it that way I guess, because they are still used to their amps or prefer the hands on control or sound or feel of a real amp.

This is exactly what people said about the Axe fx II too at the time and see now. 90% of the people that said that of the Axe fx II own a III now. Just look at the wish section of this forum. There is always room for improvements and additions.

Wish 2 PITCH blocks, 1 ON at a time

Maybe they don't see it as an issue? I am sure they have a good reason to not include 2 pitch blocks. But I think it's strange that a piece of gear of this magnitude (and price) doesn't have two pitch blocks. Even the Axe fx II has two pitch blocks and I think that has less power than the FM9?

  14. Bodde

Wish 2 PITCH blocks, 1 ON at a time

Yes it's too bad in itself that people have to buy an external pedal along their FM9 to do this. Still don't understand why there is only one pitch block in the FM9. Don't think Fractal made a statement about that? or I might have missed that. For me that's a deal breaker and the main reason I...

    Tonex One

That’s how you have to see the Tonex One too. As a two channel amp. One clean and one drive channel. For many situations that’s all you need (plus some effects).

Steve Morse, what you can’t do with amp modelers. What do you think?

We don’t know for sure but I also think that he must have tried Fractal. I think he wouldn’t base his opinion on just one modeler. He also says ‘any digital amp’. He also says he doesn’t like the tiny artifacts of digital distortion. There always will be players that don’t like modelers. Maybe...

Steve Morse, what you can’t do with amp modelers. What do you think?

I am not saying I agree or don’t agree with him, but I guess he is in a position that he must have tried every modeler available. He says ‘with any digital amp’. I am sure he must have tried out Fractal gear also. And he is not the only pro/famous player with that opinion. And there are pro’s...

    Tonex One

I am sure you can get a good sound out of the Tonex. Just find one or two amp models that you like and make all your sounds from there. One clean, one drive channel. I don’t need fifty or more amps. Just one good amp model will do for a gig. Just like with a real amp. I don’t care if it’s a...

    Tonex One

It's for a different purpose. It's a tiny box that you can put in your pocket and take to a gig or use it as a spare etc. Whereas the Axe fx is a big piece of gear that you can't take with you in a train or on a bicycle for example. Sometimes you just don't want to lug around lots of gear and...

That’s exactly what it is. The same sounds and quality as the bigger one, only in a small format and with the SE software if I understand it correctly. I will buy one as a backup for my guitar and bass amps or modeller. It has more bass stuff in it than the Axe fx actually.

AFIII Prog fusion track with weird bass tritone tuning

Recorded this new proggy fusion track this week called "The Tanagran Triton" with my Axe fx II (there is no II prefix!). The bass was recorded direct using a vst amp plugin (Brainworx). The bass is tuned in tritones F#CF#C. A rather weird tuning that generates some new ideas and sounds for me...

I have Dimarzio (humless) Area 61 and 58 single coils in one of my strats. They sound good. Yes we at least could have the option for two pitch blocks. So you could decide for yourself if the latency is too much or not. Or use a simpler chain if you want to use two pitch blocks. Wish 2 pitch blocks please

Yes. I never heard that it cannot be done. But I don’t think anyone from Fractal ever commented on the two pitch block thing. I think it’s just a strange decision that they only included one pitch block in the FM9. For me it’s a real dealbreaker unfortunately.
  56. Bodde

Do you think 2 pitch blocks is even possible on the FM9, technical and memory wise? I have no idea. If so, why didn't Fractal choose to have two pitch blocks in the FM9 from the start?

Delay or Tremolo used on this sound?

Ok that must be something that has been added on the Axe fx III then? I am on Axe fx II.
  71. Bodde

Delay or Tremolo used on this sound?

Square tremolo. I wish the tremolo block had a threshold trigger. So that it starts running at the exact beginning of the cycle the moment you pick a note. Otherwise it's very hard or even impossible to sync the tremolo to a fixed BPM. Same goes for the arpeggiator or sequencer.
  72. Bodde

    Looper Quantize

The Axe fx can’t do this! It only quantises the end point not the beginning. So for playing loops along with a drumbeat or click track the looper doesn’t work as you say. Unless you absolutely nail the begin point which is nearly impossible. If not the loop is going to drift. So if you want to...

    Fractal Audio Multi-FX Pedal

Maybe close but not the same. That's the beauty of different algos in the Eventide. It's already there without having to do complex routing with five block or so. There are more algos like that in the Eventide. Like I said, it's just different not worse. Whatever you prefer is up to you.....

  77. Bodde

    Fractal Audio Multi-FX Pedal

Well it's not a competition. Both units (Axe fx and H9/H90) can do things that the other can't do. Eventide has some very nice algos and sounds that the Axe fx just doesn't have and visa versa. I think the H9 is very easy to use, especially with the software. I don't own a H90 so I can't tell...

    Fractal Audio Multi-FX Pedal

    Fractal Audio Multi-FX Pedal

I think the Eventide H9 and H90 are the same level as the Axe fx when it comes to purely effects. What is better is highly subjective and a matter of taste. But the FM3 totally wins because there is a lot more possible than on the H9 or H90 with combining effects etc. And yes why should one wish...

FM9 - Volume pedal - use the block at the beginning of the grid, in the middle, or at the end?

If you want to do delay swells put it right before the delay. if you want to control the end volume put it right at the end. If you want to control the gain of an amp or drive put it before that. In your case put the volume block after the cab otherwise it will effect the gain.
