    Are new amps really needed?

I mostly use the Axe-FX III, however I do love a new amp every so often.
  2. J.C

Gift of Tone... why only Firmware 21?

15 was a great FW. Time to move on though!

    My new Guitar Technique Book

    Cool guitar! Prince inspired?

Is the Axe II still worth it in 2022 for bedroom player

I had the pleasure of playing the II recently. It was an eye opener how much nicer everything has become with the III. That said, I am really enjoying the differences between them. It's a beautiful sounding modeler.

    Hooking a pedalboard up to Axe-Fx 3

I am a big fan of the electro harmonix KEY9 type pedals. Turning your guitar into a steel drum is a hoot for "jane says"
  6. J.C

Poll: What type of tone/style do you mainly play?

I'm actually a fan of the 2x12 boogie cabs with the top half of the cab open. Best of both worlds from what I've heard.

    TC 1210 Challenge

That sounded great! The Rush sounding progressive part was killer.

    Typical Time Between Major Revisions

Buy now and get back to playing. You will very likely never look back after the second you plug in and play the first preset.

Gift of Tone #16: STEVE VAI

Quick question about this pack. My computer seems to be renaming the files to .Autocad attribute extraction template. Can I just rename them?

How to use the Darkglass B7K?

I've used it before the SVT. Sounds great! Try it.

Thinking of coming back to AxeFx III. Tell me about Setlists/Songs

Always fun to stretch your legs and try new gear. Do you remember what FW was installed when you decided you liked the Kemper response more? Also, did you like the Kemper better than the Quad Cortex as well?
  12. J.C

    Why not Rivera?

    Iconic tones.. for sure.
  13. J.C

Brand new user, what should I know?

The monitoring system you use could make you love or hate the product.
  14. J.C

What Prompted You To Buy A Fractal?

A newborn baby, mostly. Tube amps are just too loud for young ears, and sleep deprived wives. It was the AxeFXII or the Kemper at the time and to me it was an easy call.
  15. J.C

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.00

Getting serious in here! IMO More than a feeling is not only fizzy, it's compressed.
  16. J.C

Is it me or are others in the same boat?

Stick with the traditional setup for the band if that's what you like. Whatever keeps you practicing. I've had a tough time with FRFR, but I sure love my studio monitors for low volume playing.

the Eventide H90 leak reminds us of how good we have it with FM3

Not yet, but I have a few of their pedals and I really like the company.
  18. J.C

    Palm Muting Tone Shaping

Interesting thread. I'd never think to tailor a sound for this specifically. Always figured it was right hand technique and a guitar with lighter strings.
  19. J.C

Time spent playing guitar vs time spent learning/tweaking AXEFX

I tweak for certain outcomes, otherwise I leave it up to the master
  20. J.C

the Eventide H90 leak reminds us of how good we have it with FM3

Have you tried the El Capistan? It's worth a look. It's not a Memory Man but in some ways, I like it better.

Bands that epitomize a certain amp’s sound

They had the light break on the "And Justice" tour as well. I think it was during "one".
  22. J.C

Any recommendations for a studio chair / standing desk?

I had severe neck pain from playing a Les Paul sitting down. Something about my position really aggravated a pre-existing condition. Since then I have been looking at .strandberg* guitars for sitting. They are very light and supposedly ergonomic. Saying this because it's possible it's not...
  23. J.C

Why lower gain Cameron CCV amp model feels more noisy than much higher gain Herbie 3 ?

Try lowering some of the bass or mids possibly? Use the same idea that somewhere in the preset, it's getting out of control. Try going through the basic stuff and create some headroom in the amp, then add your EQ later in the chain. It may get you closer to what you are looking for.
  24. J.C

Why lower gain Cameron CCV amp model feels more noisy than much higher gain Herbie 3 ?

More treble = more noise in most situations. You have to look at like a race car, if you push it too hard it's going off the road. Guitar tone is always about compromise IMO.
  25. J.C

Most important controls for clean sounds

Probably it's most important to set your input and output levels. As long as you have a solid signal, you won't have to do much other than adjust the trim and gain to taste.
  26. J.C

Software synths in Logic through Axe FX

I like running synths into a tube amp one side, and pedals into the CLR the other. Things get juicy.
  27. J.C

    Axe-Fx Firmware Version 21.00 Public Beta #4 (Beta 4)

If Cliff moves amps on his own, it's because he WANTS to. :)
  28. J.C

    MATRIX is still in business.

I like the CLR, it's just 400$ to expensive IMO. I mostly use it for synth, though.
  29. J.C

    Headphone/monitors for rich sound

I like the Adams, and have the A7X. If you can, spring for the 8". You know you like them already so it's a no-brainer IMO.
  30. J.C

This is a very expensive hobby lol

I'd say buy a Fractal modeler. It's worth it. Great tones, for any genre.. day or night. Plus, all the development fun!
  31. J.C

    Sell FRACTAL at Sweetwater.

Whenever possible, I skip the middleman and get my stuff straight from the source. It makes me happy that Fractal doesn't need Sweetwater to thrive.
  32. J.C

    I Found A Marshall I'm Really Enjoying...

I've had a similar relationship with the Mesa amps. It's amazing how well the essence of the amp is captured in the model. It took me quite awhile to move from the first preset though. The Fender amps are just so good! But then the Vox for R&B/Jazz stuff.

Have you dived into pickup swaps?

Great thread! My experience has shown that pickup swaps can be amazing in certain guitars. Some 80's shred guitars really came into their own with a swap. However, I have had awful luck with livening up otherwise muddy guitars. I've given up trying to 'remove the blanket' of my heavier...

    Too Obsessive About USB Choices?

If multiple people hear something.. it probably happened. It's like going to the dr. and they blame some pain a person is having on a mental disorder merely because they have no other explanation. It's just lazy. It stops people from actually investigating things outside the established.
  37. J.C

    Too Obsessive About USB Choices?

Interesting thread. I just wonder if we all would have heard the difference if we were in the room with the engineer. Maybe the original power cable was losing integrity? Sometimes things happen. Physics and science aren't all worked out yet.
  38. J.C

Cubase sees Axe FX3 as output, but not as input?

It sounds like you have gone into Studio - Studio setup and selected AxeFX as your asio driver. If not, start there. Then go to Studio - Audio connections. Make sure you are on the input tab, click in the spreadsheet and you should have some options.

Can Axe III do a horn sound?

Admin M@. That was a real treat! Thanks for being awesome.
  41. J.C

    The 300th amp model?!

'deja vu' How about one of those Sunn amps Jimi apparently hated? The one I owned was slow and muddy, but had a classic rock mojo that reminded me of a "cleaner" fuzz. It might be different enough to be a worthy addition.
  42. J.C

    Another Axefx vs Amps thread

The reason these threads keep popping up is simple. Expectations aren't met. The expectations themselves maybe unrealistic or uninformed but they persist. It could be the amp in the room vs. recorded tone discussion, but who knows? It's tough to talk sound.
  43. J.C

    Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 20.00

Dweezil's Bassman comes alive for me with FW20. The palm muting effect is pronounced in a way I haven't heard from a modeler, and it is a blast to play around with. Thanks to Fractal and the community for such a great product.
  44. J.C

Goodbye to Dave Smith (Sequential Circuits)

I didn't know he was sick. That is horrible news. Sequential is such a great synth company, I kind of took them for granted. Moog and Sequential are my favorite synths. I hope the person that takes over approaches the position with the same integrity Dave Smith had. He will be missed.

Def Leppard On Jimmy Kimmel - Off Air Peformance

The record is an interesting one and I'm glad someone authentic is still doing Rock music. The obvious call backs to the era came off more like an old friend than a copycat. Now I am inspired to revisit Earth, Wind, and Fire and the Georgia Satellites.. among others.

Why are so many people not relying on their ears anymore?

Thanks for typing this out. It's helpful to know how things work in different circles. I can see why it's important there.
  47. J.C

Why are so many people not relying on their ears anymore?

When you consider that unplugging a single pedal (even in off position) can change your tone, it's easy to see why some people look for help. One of the biggest factors for me is using the right guitar. If you have the proper instrument it's 10x easier to get the sound you want IMO. I'd say...

    Fractal Fingers

Don't play when your hands are wet or after a shower.
  49. J.C

Axe FX too overkill for bedroom only playing?

Anyone you live with will not say it's overkill after a couple of days in the house. Just make sure to have plenty of fun with your amps the week before it shows up.

Axe-Fx III Factory Presets Release 19.04

AFX3 has to be the single most entertaining and useful piece of guitar gear ever produced. It's not just there is so much to do, it's that it all sounds good enough to make you want to!

    Thinking about a Monitor upgrade...

I find these threads interesting. I noticed a huge upgrade with my ADAM a7x playing at a volume up just enough to hear all the details. No doubt room treatment is important, but the differences are still staggering IMO. Would my sound be better with room treatment and the previous presonus...

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 19.00 Beta 3

I could hear the difference. Wasn't in the tone though, I could not hear a difference there. I picked the tone with less noise with relative confidence it had to be the Axe FX. Fractal is the best thing that's ever happened to guitar playing, for many reasons. Can't believe ever one guessed...

Is Neal Schon still using the Axe Fx III?

It's fun to see how gear reacts. For me, one and done options including holy grail amps wear on you the same. After a while, you can really enjoy a Gorilla just because it's different.

    Let's post: AITR clips

I was going to stay at FW 16, it's amazing. I was under the impression Mark 1 couldn't do FullRes IR's at all.. Great news to me!

    AxeFX3 and tube amp purchases

I bought a fender champ because of the Axe Fx 2. I love it.

Mayer used an Axe-FX 3 for his new album

It's great that he's enjoying it more. His opinions matter, especially the critical ones.

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 16.05

The feel and response of this FW is great, and it's hard to make it sound bad with a Telecaster. Really happy with 16
  65. J.C

Got a newsletter from an amplifier manufacturer today... Clearly they haven't tried Cygnus! Lol!

The most versatile tone I have in my arsenal is the Mark IV amp, lead channel. It covers so much ground with just the volume knob it's amazing. Axe-FX is just easier to play though, your mistakes just don't jump out as harshly.
  66. J.C

    Clean? Or really clean?

I like the Rockman clean tone sometimes but, as la noise stated.. it can hurt. Everyone seems to appreciate a little breakup.

For me, it's was the 2c++. It was perfect.
  68. J.C

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 16.03

I am in the same situation, but instead made the Axe FX a focal point in between homes. It's perfect for the studio in the corner of a bedroom thing!

    Exploring The Various Tube Types

For Cleans, it's 6L6. For gain sounds, I buck the trend and prefer the El 34's. In the real Mark IV I go simul-class which has 2 of each. The differences are more obvious on the amp in the room, but I still notice a change in the Axe FX.
  70. J.C

mini game : JP2C VS axe fx 3

The second one sounds like it needed to be fed into the IR a little hotter. You can tell in the opening part of the riff.

    60 Second Sounds - Dynamic Rhythm/Lead - Episode 2

This is why you buy and Axe FX! I had no idea about the mod matrix. Wow.

Axe FX sounds better after a few minutes?

This thing needs a standby switch!
  73. J.C

    Exploring The Various Tube Types

You should play around with a Boogie Mark series amp and some different tubes. I think you'd hear and feel a difference between El-34 and 6L6.

Axe III via Studio Monitor v.s. Tube Combo at the Same Volume

Get a used Deluxe Reverb or something, they are inexpensive. It'll give you some perspective. Better yet, just play the Axe FX III and get on with the music. The tone you get from any Axe FX unit is better than you will ever need.

Axe III via Studio Monitor v.s. Tube Combo at the Same Volume

This conversation has been attempted many times in the past, with ugly results. Bravo for giving it another shot. It's always been my opinion that they help the Fractal team move forward. Most forum members see it as an opportunity to dogpile, though. I am happy with the the AXE FX III, it...

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 16.00 "Cygnus"

I feel like this FW is certainly a step towards more real, and I'm not saying that to disparage tube amps or justify my purchase.
  81. J.C

.....A way to understand ... and update to Cygnus in a good way ...

You should learn to trust your ears first. Some of the best guitar recordings don't sound amazing in isolation. It's where you put your tone in the mix that matters anyway.
  82. J.C

    Axe FX 3 Headphones output

I own the 1990 pro's that operate at that spec. They sound amazing and being open back really helps me enjoy the Axe FX without that compressed feeling closed backs can imitate.

    Axe-Fx III 16.00 Beta 5 "Cygnus" Firmware - Public Beta #2

Axe-Fx III 16.00 Beta 4 "Cygnus" Firmware - Public Beta

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 15.01

Everyone has their preference, but if you can't get it done with an Axe FX III than it's probably out of your reach. Maybe you need a 50,000$ Dumble but chances are it's your hands that aren't producing the right sounds.

Ares 2.0 vs Axe-Fx III fw.14 (worth the upgrade?)

Worth getting AXE iii in 2020?

You could get a used Axe FX 2 and be happy. Or get a 3 and be really happy. The tones are so good, I had complaints they were unrealistically good. Super easy to dial in as well with the right speakers.
  97. J.C

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 12.10

These kinds of posts are why I love Fractal Audio, an American company.
  98. J.C

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS!

One of the things I enjoy most of the Axe FX is the ability to chain multiple things with no audio problems or failures. To me it is worth the price of admission.
