Axe-Fx > SPDIF > Scarlett 6i6. No output level meters?

I have the axe plugged into the scarlett 6i6 via spdif. I set the 6i6 to direct monitor the spdif, in standalone mode, meaning I don't need to have the PC turned on to use it. I'm noticing on the Axe, none of the output level meters light up. Meaning I don't know if I am clipping when turning...

What is the purpose of input gain, if it doesn't affect tone, unless the value is low?

it says it wouldn't affect gain or tone unless the value was really low such at 5%. but people try to set it as high as possible with their hottest guitar so that it tickles the reds. What is this setting actually doing and does it matter? If it doesn't affect tone at all, why not leave it at...

Knowing my luck with purchases like this, I get it and then 1 month later a MK2 version comes out. I'm curious, for those who got the original Axe FX 2 MK1, and stuck with it till the very end. Was the tone the exact same? From what I read, the original one was supported up to the very end...

Any bedroom only players using an Axe-Fx 3?

I recently sold my Xl+ specifically to offset the cost and purchase a 3. Haven't done it yet because I've been second guessing it. I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it as a bedroom only player? When I had the XL+ I would dial up pretty basic patches. Mostly Amp-Cab and some type of reverb...

I want to get something that takes up as little room as possible, and still allows me to place things on top (computer monitor, etc) I am looking at the following case: https://www.audiopile.net/R3UE-10 When I had the Axe Fx 2, I had the same case but it was 2U and was 14", the axe fx 2...

    Worth upgrading from XL+?

I'm wondering if there is enough of a difference to justify selling the XL+ and picking up the 3? One thing I am thinking is that I am getting more in to electronic music, and perhaps the 3 has greater possibility for weird and crazy sounds? Making the guitar sound like not a guitar, etc? Are...

Best way to set volume on axe fx?

I'm just a bedroom player, but the way I've been doing it has been to increase the amp block level until it starts to clip, then back off slightly, then use the output level knob on the front of the axe to adjust overall volume. Is that the way to do it, or is it best to leave the front output...

Possible to have spdif and output 1 connected at the same time?

Right now I have the axe connected to my audio interface (control audio 6) using the stereo XLR outputs. This interface only works when the PC is running. So If I want to just noodle around, I have to turn the PC on too. I don't like this setup. Is it possible to plug the Axe into the...

I have owned the Axe Fx 2 XL+ for a year, and I am still not satisfied with the tone.

hmm, i don't know. Recording wise, the unit is great, and if I was recording a track, then yeah I'd use the axe fx. But just me by myself practicing, to me, doing that through an actual guitar amp always seems to sound better to me. Even when I plug in to my Roland Cube 30, it sounds thicker...

I have owned the Axe Fx 2 XL+ for a year, and I am still not satisfied with the tone.

I will say that the unit in a recording sounds great, but in terms of just general bedroom practice, there has always been something missing. I play through JBL 305's. The type of music I play is all over the place, but usually defaults to John Mayer/SRV style blues. I can never get that bell...

Can someone help me connect Axe Fx 2 to Audio Interface?

Would I then use the output level to control the overall volume of the guitar, and then use the main output volume on the interface to control the volume of the backing track? Also, wouldn't it also be possible to set the interface as the output device, and the axe as the input device? This...

Can someone help me connect Axe Fx 2 to Audio Interface?

I want to connect my axe fx 2 to a complete audio 6 interface. I don't want to use spdif, but I want to go from the axe outputs to input 1 and 2 on the interface. Do I need to have the axe's output level knob set to max and then adjust the input gain for each input on the interface?

How to get the cleanest signal for VST plugins?

I found one workaround which works but is not ideal. I set Midi Guitar Input to Axe Fx, and the output to my built in iMac speakers. I then turn the output level knob on the Axe off completely. This way I hear no signal from the Axe, but its still being sent to the software. The only...

Yes I am using the Axe Fx as an interface. Doesn't seem like you can choose specific channels in midi guitar standalone. If I use just all shunts, I get no signal at all from Midi Guitar. If I use the Tube Pre, I get a signal but like I said, I can hear the clean guitar mixed with the Synth...

I currently have the JBL LSR305's but I still have a couple of weeks left in my guitar center return policy. When I watch guitar videos on youtube, I notice that a lot of people own the Yamaha HS series of monitors with their axe fx. I wanted to get some opinions on whether the HS5's are...

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

Well I already discovered that no matter which amp model I use, the higher the master volume, the better the sound gets to me. However someone else mentioned that this is a side effect of playing at low volumes. Thing is, low volumes is what I am stuck with, and don't ever expect to play at...

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

All I am saying is that a lot of amps sound very similar to the point where any differences are usually hair splitting. And after a few minutes of playing an amp, your ears adjust, and you forget about the difference. I set the tone stack at noon. input gain at 10, master volume at 10. and...
  27. R

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

I'd also speculate that when the amps are in the same room as you, you can perceive a difference much more than when they are recorded with a mic.
  28. R

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

The Keith Urban amp wouldn't sound like the IIC+, but as I said in the OP, they would be in different categories. The KU amp would sound similar to other amps in its same category of low/mid gain. I will admit that I play at low volumes, and don't expect to ever use the unit at gig level volumes.

Brad Paisley Tone. Without A Fight

This song caught my ear on the radio recently and i fell in love with the tone. Tried to recreate it in the Axe. Dr Z Maz 38 amp with 2x12 AC30 Top Boost cab w/ Celestion Blues. Analog slap back delay and a small amount of spring reverb. The studio recording might be a bit drier, but I do...

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

Another thing I've been noticing lately is that I tend to dime the master volume on every amp block as to me that seems to wake the amp up. I find that the lower the master volume, the more sterile sounding the tone. However from reading the forum, I seem to be alone with this opinion.
  31. R

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

A lot of it is a learning experience. I can see someone getting excited about the possibility of 200+ amps, but then when you really sit down with everything, you realize what I posted about. It's a reminder to take a step back when getting caught up with GAS.
  32. R

A depressing realization (and unpopular opinion): most of the amps sound very similar.

I have found through experimentation that most of the amps sound very similar. I found that you can usually group the amps in to two categories low/mid gain, and high gain. The amps in each category honestly sound very similar to each other. Yeah, some amps may have some emphasis on certain...

Help me deal with this GAS problem: MK V:25

Keep in mind, and this took me a while to finally grasp. What you hear on youtube is the amp recorded with a mic. Meaning the Axe Fx will most likely be able to nail the tone if the amp model is close enough and you use the right IR. If you were to buy a Mk V right now, it might not sound...

Got my Axe Fx.....but not impressed so far.

I like a lot of different tones. The usual lead tone I try to go for though can pretty much be summed up as 80's lead. Van Halen style. That, or Andy Timmons tone. In terms of cleans....I'm still in search of this, in a box: I think that is a volume problem though. Not sure if I'd get...

That's another thing that may be a big factor. I got the Axe also for the ability for low volume playing while retaining good tones. a lot of my testing so far has been fairly low volume. If I were to crank the monitors it would probably feel much fuller. Thing is, that wouldn't be my normal...

I guess everyone's ear is different. That tone is perfectly acceptable to me. I would be satisfied with having that as a SRV tone to play around with. On the Axe I tried the typical SRV setup. 2 vibe verbs or super reverbs. one set dirtier, one set cleaner. with reverb. Basically what...

Turning off the cab block makes everything sound buzzy. If I was running straight into the cube through the main guitar input, maybe, but I am running it into the aux in. This is meant for mp3's/ipods. So I am sure it is pretty flat.
