I wanted to release the Pink Floyd pack update today - as I said earlier, there's just a few different amp tones in that one. But, I got caught up testing 8 different options for the main lead tone, used in songs like "Comfortably numb", "On the turning away", "The final cut" and others, which will be the template for the distorted tones (I use another type of distorted tone, warmer/fatter/fuzzier, more vintage, for "Time", "Echoes", "Shine on", "Have a cigar" etc.). Been doing just that, testing lead sounds, since yesterday ! Of course, I know that Gilmour use a Hiwatt and drive/fuzz pedals (I've read the "Gilmourish" website carefully, and other sources), and I also checked that in the Axe with Cygnus. But as before, it didn't work as well for me as using a distorted amp. Anyway, with distorted amps, I can get the tones real close to the drive=>Hiwatt combination, but I like a distorted amp, as opposed to a drive pedal into a Hiwatt as a clean platform, much more. Bobby Harrison, who used to play in Brit Floyd, did the same, he used a Friedman BE model for the distorted tones, and it worked well for him ! I've also checked rig rundowns of many players, like Dave Kilminster (guitar player with Roger Waters on the "The wall" tour and others), everyone uses what works best for him ! That has been my approach since I started the Mauritian Tribute to Pink Floyd project.
So, I made a presets with two amp blocks, and each scene would be with a different setup - fuzz or drive into Hiwatt, Friedman BE/HBE (like on the previous version of the pack), new Legacy model, Archon, Shiva, Cameron, and even Dumble/Fuchs... And after playing the "Comfortably numb" solo for more than 10 hours in two days, constantly tweaking, comparing with different Gilmour versions (the studio one, PULSE, the recent live in Pompei), the model that sounds/feels the best for me is that of the amp that I own : the Mesa Triple Crown, red channel. I have the 50 w version at home, the Axe model is the 100 w one, but I don't think it matters. If you've seen demos of that amp with Andy Timmons, you know that it's not a "metal" amp like the MK series or Rectos, and it's capable of warm vintage tones, even on its high gain channel. So, for the updated Cygnus version of the pack, I'm going to use it, instead of the BE !
