Which ones were those 3 different FRFRs?
JBL EON610, JBL EON612, Line 6 Powercab. The JBL EON612 sounded best to my ears...but the CLR is so much better, it's off the scale. I've subsequently picked up a little Mackie DLM8 which I like too. It's not as good as the CLR, but it's acceptable and good for portability, when that's important.

For me, emphasizing mids on high gain and rolling back some highs is the secret to good high gain without the cheap sounding, annoying fizz. As was mentioned earlier, using less gain than one might think is also good. It's still gainy, but no longer a muddy mess.
