Overdrive Level vs Perceived Volume

I have a probably dumb question when using the T808 Mod in the front of my Mesa TC-50.

Settings: Gain–0 Tone–5 Level–10: Typical metal boost settings.

Why when using this as a boost for Channel 2 to tighten the low end the volume is basically at unity gain, but when I use the same settings into clean Channel 1, the volume I hear increases dramatically?

I have attached my amp settings.

Thanks

Because the the gain on channel 2 does compress the level.

more gain into high gain = compression. more gain into a clean tone = more gain, which in turn is more volume.
