Using too much finger muscle....

Yep, there is a trick I teach my students. Just play something (anything) on a one string with just the pinky of your fretting hand and the other fingers of your fretting hand suspended in the air. Now only your thumb and pinky are touching the neck, so there can't be any "death-grip" going on...

Shreddy CLEAN tone?

Clean amp, compressor and then turn up the Input Trim to taste. For more (sharper) definition try to swap the tonestack for the Brit Silver one. And for this type of sound (if I understand you correctly) a 1x12 IR might work best because of the directness and focus.

Starting to play guitar again, Ibanez RG still good?

RG's still kick major *ss. And so do the RGA's for that matter. If you played a 507 before, than a 350 or a 370 might be the ticket for you, not to mention the 550.
