    All computers are horrible EMI terrorists, they pollute at least nearest 10 feet in every direction. I managed to put the computer in next room with long cables, it was perfection: no emi or noise. 0db computer noise is a huge thing.

    I never use high or low cuts. The IR sounds the same that the mic hears in front of the cabinet. Change the IR if its too bright.

    Ancient pc works fine if it has a fresh install of windows without bloatware and junk. Format everything and start from the beginning. A 25 year old computer is powerful enough to run a period-correct DAW and record 50 tracks perfectly, just keep such relics away from the internet and they work...

    For sure it does, i’ve done hundreds of those with mic in one spot and just tweaking preamp gain into different levels of distortion. It changes the resulting eq, of course it doesn't capture the distortion itself. Monitoring the actual sound is useless, as the result is unpredictable. Thats why...

    side note: if you do your own IRs and want to go deeper into the rabbit hole, drive your mic preamp into distortion. It changes the result, and can sound nice once baked into the IR.
