There's one in smilefan's patches that reminds me of them.
But surely, we can do much better with the tape delay and more exact settings now.
I had been looking into it a month ago here:
- Home
Specifically:
http://www.tvsspecialtyproducts.com/page8.htm
Lots of good info and vids there, but haven't gotten to programming it yet...
These were some of my notes:
- uses 13 - 56 strings
- dead strings are sometimes better, esp. D string
- bright pickups (mostly bridge only; never used neck PU on last tour)
- hard pick, does a lot of up-picking!
- often plays slightly damped on bridge
- VOX AC 15 w British Celestion Blue (Normal ch. for early stuff; later on Top Boost)
- After recording yourself, often a low cut is needed between 100 - 500 Hz
If you use reverb at all: use 800Hz low cut on reverb and around 8 à 10kHz hi cut.
- Peace Pipe used neck PU w. low cut.
- Atlantis uses 3 different echo parts.
The main one is a good generic echo for most Shadows stuff, though Apache really needs its own one. (one guy in the videos only uses 3 echo styles to cover "all songs")
- Binson Echorec differed from unit to unit, but one best for The Shadows seemed to have ca 77ms between heads. (also used by Pink Floyd)
- Binson EC3 is about 75ms
- Roland Space Echo RE-201 (slightly metallic) (used on Apache & Atlantis in 1975 concert; Don't Cry For Me Argentina, '79 Cavatina, Heart of Glass, ...) & 301 (life in the jungle album & live ...?, Hello, ...)
- from Apache to Blue Star, 1960-61: Meazzi 1: 5 heads spaced unequally w different output levels.
- Wonderful Land: Meazzi Echomatic 2 : 4 heads with unequal intervals. 3 of them w. fixed level towards each other but could be varied in group versus the other head.
- Meazzis had a woody & organic sound, distorting & compressing when driven hard.
- Hank doesn't like 'wow & flutter' and nowadays prefers to play without it if simulated on digital units.
- Also used Boogie IIc, Matchless, ...
After reading the above, I wonder if stuff like this has any relation to it at all...
