I have a 4-string bass, Fender American Elite Precision, that I've been tuning to B-E-A-D by using the four lowest strings of a 5-string set.
These are the strings I'm using now: Ernie Ball 5-String Super Slinky Nickel Wound Bass Set, .040 - .125.
The problem I have is that the 4th string is a bit "floppy", rattles against the frets if played with much more than a light touch. I've adjusted string height and neck relief as best I can to help with this, but it's not solving the problem.
I'm wondering if a higher-tension string set would help. I'd prefer not to go with a higher guage so that I don't have to file the nut further, making switching back to E-A-D-G a problem.
Can you recommend a string set that will solve my dilemma or I'm asking too much if my 34" scale bass? Maybe I should be in the market for a 35" scale 5-string (I regret selling my Modulus Quantum 5).
Thanks!
