Mid Boost

Fractal Audio provides a couple of custom Drive models. These virtual drives have no real-life equivalents. They solely exist within the Axe-Fx II, FX8 and AX8, implementing Cliff’s ideas and improvements on existing pedals.

The guitar is a “middle frequencies” instrument. It has no business competing with the bass (low frequencies) or cymbals (high frequencies). The mids are where it shines. Emphasizing those frequencies often makes the guitar cut better through a mix than increasing its volume level. That’s why some amps, pedals and guitars have mid-boosting options.

The Mid Boost model’s purpose is to boost the mids, and that’s obvious when you select and engage this model. The sound approaches that of a cocked wah. It's a great drive model for leads. It could also pass as a treble booster. Its Clip Type is Silicon. The Drive parameter determines the amount of overdrive.

Another approach would be to use a PEQ or GEQ to boost the mids. These require less CPU power. For example put a GEQ after the AMP block, select 5-band passive, and turn up the middle band.

About CPU:
  • Fractal Audio's Drive models take up varying amounts of CPU. The Mid Boost model requires a moderate amount.
  • When a Drive block is engaged, CPU percentage will rise during playing, because CPU usage is "amplitude dependent".

This pedal used to be my go-to for darker amps like the Rectos, and it even brought a nice sizzle to scooped clean amps like some Fenders.
