Coverband Players Share Your Song Secrets

I dunno! I played a gig last night where I goodnaturedly knocked the shite out of a few folks verbally and it was great fun for all involved! :) ...including those on the receiving end, btw. ;) And on the soloing thing I tend to improvise most things. You can't get away with improving Sweet...

Bonham. Then maybe Zepplin would play another gig and I'd get to see it. :)

    Troy Grady, "What is Stringhopping?"

Very cool video. At the start I thought that it was a little too analytical. However, I've never seen anybody tackle the subject of technique with such depth. I must have a look at some of his other stuff.

If you could only have one amp modeled in your Axe...

No. Part of the reason I own one is because of all of the available amps. When I gig I have a series of amps that I have set up with the same effects chains and I choose the amp for the room and switch in stomps as I need. If this was all I did the answer would be a maybe.... even though the...

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

And it's also extremely cool to look at the flavours all these scales and modes give you. For instance the leading tone in harmonic minor gives a very arabic feel. Dorian mode is slightly happier, and add the two together and you get jazz melodic minor which is only sounds non-major when you hit...
  7. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

There is a harmonic minor scale, and a melodic in the classical sense and a melodic in the jazz sense. What I wrote was that there is no harmonic minor key. People use the terms interchangeably and they don't mean the same thing.
  8. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

Exactly. People use the terms interchangeably and they most certainly aren't interchangeable.
  9. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

Just a small point, but there is no harmonic minor key. It's just minor. You're right though in that playing with E phrygian mode will wield the same notes as A natural minor scale. Problem is that these two harmonic contexts don't have the same cadences or progressions to reflect the differing...

  18. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

You are possibly referring to the days before equal temperament tuning? The frequency of a C note in the key of C is not the same as the frequency of a C in the key of G, and a C in F is different again, albeit by only a few cents. The system we use today is an average of all of the differences...
  19. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

No problem. Any note in higher case is a major key root and in lower case it's a minor key root. Starting on C (higher case, so major) if you go up one to G, the keys only differ by one note (F#) so a smooth transition is possible while modulating. If you go down to F, the note that is different...

  23. BigD1977

Is there any legit reasons why only playing in one key on every song is a bad idea?

I think the op is on about changing tonal centre rather than the key. This goes back to how we perceive music. A lot of the time playing with the same tonal centre can bore people especially over the course of a whole album. Also, the same line sounds different to me when it has a different...

Reference Monitors you can wear... (Focal, Adam, Mofi, Beyerdynamics)

Steven Wilson used to record and mix in a room in his house that was largely untreated. We 'hear' with our eyes sometimes and for some people a certain brand just has 'it' for them. Also, our perceptions shift according to exposure. If you listen to a system for a while your ear (in this case...

    Cliff is up to something.

Because the II and the IIXL have exactly the same processing power. When the Ultra ended it was because the unit had reached it's limit. It makes no sense that the updates for the II should stop while the IIXL should continue. It's a misunderstanding of some text.

MFC-101... is it worth the money?

I don't agree. I've done blues and covers gigs with a Les Paul, switching between pickups for tones with a coil split and using the volume rolloff to control clean/dirty sounds. I used one preset for the two hour gig..... but granted, this was a stylistically limited gig.

guitar exam at school (Allan Holdsworth guitar solo content)

CLR Active Cab noise: Is it normal?

The amp in the CLR is the last level of amplification in the chain. Whatever noise is in the signal at this point will get cranked, including and cable noise, interference, etc. and if the Master is cranked, so will all the noise. I use two for stereo live monitoring. I tend to leave the...

    Fletcher-Munson curve query

Agreed, it doesn't really matter in this context. It alarms the pedantic me who tries to explain to students which is which, why you use it, and why a Sound Intensity meter looks funny compared to an SPL meter. There's a time and a place however. :)
  57. BigD1977

    Fletcher-Munson curve query

Also, there are better standards out there. ISO 226. One thing concerns me though: the graph lists Intensity (dB) which isn't the same as dB SPL. To the OP: Yes you will experience a difference in your ears response due to a differing loudness. That's what the Fletcher-Munson curves try to...

FW19 Good Sounding Metal Zone ?!

At The Gates - Slaughter OF The Soul was recorded using a Metal Zone, and I'm sure there were many others. You can get a good tone out of it through a nice clean fat channel as you say. Yeah, I think I see what you're getting at. I used to gig with a lot of distortion and found that my sound got cleaner at higher volumes in a band situation. Then, my clean sounds would break up a little better at higher volumes. Just a suggestion, and it's contrary to what you might want to...

Fletcher-Munson - Give Me Back My Tone You Dirty $#@%!!

Absolutely. It should be noted that the Fletcher-Munson curves were achieved by testing a number of people and averaging the results. The looks don't do it for me, but it might have some tonal uses. It also depends on how easy it is to change your pickup position in a live setting. Well, didn't Meshuggah use the stock VST amp sims in Cubase for Koloss, and use the Axe as an AD converter? They use the Axe live though. On that score the blame lies squarely in the camp of the record companies. The minute that music became solely about making money it was doomed.
