    Would you help a stranger?

As an engineer who sometimes gets interrupted by customer support calls (um yeah, my machine doesn't run, what should I do...) I have had to check myself many times, and I consider growth in grace in this area an accomplishment and a mark of maturity.

    Thank you Fractal Audio

+1 to the OP! I’ve mucked around with a few other modelers and none come close to Fractal stuff in terms of tone shaping tools in a way that just works for my brain. And the tones ain’t bad either. 😉 Happy New Year everyone!

Same but different here. You can't hear anything but drums and vocals in the room. I brought it up to the worship pastor, and even volunteered to help with sound, but nothing changed, so I stepped down from guitar playing. Too much stress trying to learn songs in three days and too little...

    Let's talk Telecasters/Partscasters

@Andy Eagle I read that a "compound" radius neck using the same ratio as the string width at the nut to the string width at the bridge (which I assume really means the nut to string-width-at-end-of-fretboard) yields the most consistent action across all strings and during a bend. Agree? Disagree?

First show with Dyna Cab - Bust

I probably don't have the best ears, because I find that my ears tend to be pretty forgiving of a guitar tone all by itself. They adjust to the relative brightness of a tone and it sounds okay. For example, my studio monitors are brighter than my headphones. If I change from one to the other...

Trouble with my high end on a live context !

I'm personally a fan of the optical compressor with the LED light type. I run one before the amp and one after. I use Emphasis, set around 5, in the Sidechain for the compressor after the amp. I use a hollow body guitar, so I don't need a ton of compression before the amp. Too much will...
  28. J

Trouble with my high end on a live context !

Also, a compressor BEFORE the amp can help you stay in the sweet spot of the amp and help control piercing high notes. So can EQ before the amp. If you don't have enough 300-600Hz going into the amp the high notes can thin out.
  29. J

Trouble with my high end on a live context !

The drx10 frequency response graph looks ok. Maybe keep the contour switch off. If the tone is okay in the house, then I would turn on the EQ for output 2 (assuming you are driving the stage monitor with output 2) and boost mids and cut highs until it sounds good. Also, make sure you don't...

Not the studio monitor question that you think

You should hear a mono signal in the “phantom center” if your monitors and room are right. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that will help you understand how to set things up properly. Aside from that, if you like the sound of one speaker better, just use one.

My first FAS product - FM9T - coming from Helix.

Welcome! I think you will be very happy with this decision. I’ve worked with a Helix and have an FM9. Helix is fine, but Fractal modeling and block flexibility to get the tones you’re after is next level. IMHO
  37. J

About the role of a compressor

When it’s pre it affects how the transients hit the non linear amp. In practice, for me doing the edge of breakup thing, it controls the breakup when you dig in. I think it fattens the tone a bit more than post, also, probably because breakup adds high frequency content.
  38. J

About the role of a compressor

If the pick attack you like sounds fine in a mix then leave it alone. If it’s a bit poky, try the optical compressor. Change the type to LED if you need more off the leading edge. Use the mix as needed. Try it before and after the amp, or try one before and one after, just doing less each.
  39. J

    Tone Junkie Modeling is Dead

Obviously his position is ridiculous if you're representing it accurately (not going to waste my time watching the video). But, each person has their own needs, so a capture probably makes sense for some people. Personally, I love modelling and have no use for capturing.

    Room Correction Software

But in response to the OP, I agree with others that you cannot fix low end (especially) issues with EQ correction alone. That said, anything is better than nothing, so go for what you do first. Just don’t try to fix things below 150hz or so too much.
  42. J

    Room Correction Software

I’m using both acoustic absorption and EQ correction via Peace APO via REW. Music sounds great, but the problem I have is I use an FM9 for audio output, so my guitar doesn’t have the EQ correction.

PSA - David Hislop's AxeFX III/FM3/OMG9 Presets Are Here (Bethel)

I played around with the DH preset last night and would agree that there are some significant dropout times going between some scenes. I guess I just didn't notice it in the mix on Sunday. I'm in the other camp - I like my effects a little better than his, and I think some of the dropout may...

PSA - David Hislop's AxeFX III/FM3/OMG9 Presets Are Here (Bethel)

I used the DH Bethel presets this past Sunday and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, meaning, no more gap than normal. But I've never really optimized my own presets for lag either. I just anticipate the button press and live with it. I find his presets really good with a few EQ...

    Bell-like overtones/noise after lowering action

  48. J

    Wish Dynamic EQ

I'll add to this bump. A DynEQ would be very useful, even more than multiband compression. It's the missing DAW or higher end board trick that can change an okay tone into a great tone, or more likely in my case, a problematic tone into a really good tone.
  49. J

    Delays Sounding Too Reverbery

Are the amplifiers used with your FR cabs and guitar cabs acting in a non-linear way at all (i.e. compressing)? For that matter, your FR and real cab speakers may be compressing more than your studio monitors. Compression after a delay will definitely change how it sounds.

Yamaha HS-8 vs Adam T8V vs Headrush 108s or 112s

I agree HS8s are great, especially for the money. In my (amateur's) opinion, controlling some of the room reflections is way more important than the difference between low-end and mid-range priced monitors. Any monitor can sound fatiguing if there is chaos going on in the room, especially if...

Yamaha HS-8 vs Adam T8V vs Headrush 108s or 112s

My cousin-in-law has some Genelec and Focal Shape Twins. He likes them both in his small studio, but the Shape Twins he said are his go-to. They are amazing. Not sure if you can swing that kind of money, but if you think you can I would suggest making the effort/trip to listen to monitors in...

Yamaha HS-8 vs Adam T8V vs Headrush 108s or 112s

I’ve had Adam A7, Yamaha HS8, and now have Focal Twins. They all sound “good,” but the Focals are far less fatiguing and more revealing. My tones translate much better with the Focals. I also treated my room when changing to the Focals, so it’s not apples to apples. Whatever you decide, I...

The exact same thing happened to my brother a short time ago. A tree fell and brought the wire down, though it stayed connected. They eventually put the wire back up and left other trees with branches literally hanging down onto the wire. I guess it's not their job to trim the trees.

    Focal Solo6 or Twin6?

The solo6 were the 2022 version. I was there six weeks ago and listened to the Be version. The sales guy, Josiah (highly recommend you ask for him if you ever visit) and I both thought the new solo was quite a bit brighter without the mids to support it. Maybe the tweeters mellow with...

NMD! Came home with a couple Twin 6. Tried Neumann, PMC, Solo6 (big disappointment) and others. The Focal are a bit bright but the sound field depth is amazing, the sweet spot is wide and you want to just keep listening. It was like all the others were 2-d and the twins 3-d. Anyway, I traded...

    Impinged shoulder anyone?

My Primary Care MD has no problem giving me a referral to a chiropractor, and he is a “by the books” kind of doc as far as I can tell. That said, I haven’t been to one in quite some time as I’ve found I can maintain my back health through a large hard foam roll and ice if necessary.

    Impinged shoulder anyone?

I had the same thing. My MD said they could knock me out and break the encapsulation by force, or I could do PT. I chose therapy. It did not help. Speaker Drive and Thump appreciation thread!

I haven’t tried Speaker Thump with any heavy tones yet, but I’m loving what it does to the so-called Class A amps. Getting a drummer to play in time

    Any 335'ers Up In Here??
