dumb question - any "fix" for the loud pop you get when powering on/off?

Straight to the board, +4 dBu line level.

dumb question - any "fix" for the loud pop you get when powering on/off?

Weird. I've toggled power on my FM9 while my channel was open to FOH and my wedge was being fed from Out 2, and nobody heard a thing.

    Beta Tester Positions NOW FILLED

Beta testing for Fractal products is extremely rewarding. It can also be fun, exciting, boring and tedious. It can also be very busy at times, particularly when there are multiple updates under development on multiple products. At other times, you get to take a breather. It’s particularly...

dumb question - any "fix" for the loud pop you get when powering on/off?

Both of my FM9s are dead silent during power up and power down, as are my Axe-Fx IIIs. My FM3 produces a noticeable but manageable pop. Previous generations of Fractal gear did the pop thing, except for the FX8, which is also dead silent when you flip the power switch. Contact support. Your FM9...

    Dialing out amp hum?

The hum and noise on high-gain signals is usually junk that’s comIng in through your guitar. You can test this by removing your guitar cord from your FM3 and seeing what happens to the noise.

Plexi amp on max - is this normal?

It looks like you’re clipping on the output of the 6th block in the third row, and that’s clipping the input to the seventh block.

How to improve my sound / artificial sound?

Not really a threshold — more of a continuum. With pro and semi-pro speakers, you pretty much get what you pay for. Like @pauly said, save a bit, and get the best you can reasonably afford.

How much "wet" signal do you prefer to run?

That question is trickier than it might seem. It’s like asking, “How much salt should I use when I’m cooking food?” It depends so much on the dish (is it the main course (rhythm), a side dish (fill), the main side dish (lead)...?). And it depends on the style of food you’re cooking. And how much...

    Rotary Speaker increases volume

You're running two high-gain amps, and you've dimed the gain on both amps. The resulting distortion adds a lot of high end. On top of that, you've set the input EQ on both amps to cut out a lot of low end. On one of the amps, you have Low Cut dialed all the way up to 540 Hz! The low end of your...

Upgrading studio monitors in a tight space

It wasn’t clear from the picture that the ceiling was vaulted. The arch must run from front to back in the picture, in which case it’s troublesome that the bricks appear to end partway through the arch. A vault requires a continuous, unbroken arch of material. Otherwise, it’s just bricks...

About Matching Your Cabinet's Resonant Frequency

The following is an approximation. The actual impedance curve of a speaker cabinet is a complex blend of impedances, and it's hard to unblend them to reverse-engineer what effect each parameter has. That's why it's easier to to tweak by eye as I described above. Q is the center (resonant)...
  67. Rex

About Matching Your Cabinet's Resonant Frequency

Tweak the Q until the low-frequency spike is shaped like the one in your plot. Q will make the spike narrower or wider. Tweak HF Resonance until the slope on the right side of the curve best matches the slope on your plot.

Favorite amp and cab for vocals?

Guitar amps and cabs don’t flatter the human voice and are rarely used for that... unless you’re looking for a distorted, low-fidelity sound. I that case, you can pick whichever ones you want, depending n how much distortion you want.

    General question

The factory presets aren’t the sweet spot — they’re just one sweet spot, chosen to serve a specific sound. It’s like painting a picture using a set of oil paints. There isn’t just one combination of colors that makes a great painting.

From his description, it sounds like that third amp is just to give his guitar something to work against, and doesn’t contribute significantly to his tone. Progress?

I think you’re reading too much into this. Your FM3 is doing way more with its CPU than just amp modeling. If gapless switching does take a little extra CPU, that doesn’t mean it’s a deal killer. That just means that maybe you can’t have all seventeen blocks in that preset. :) And with...

Bug? Scene names on scribble strips acting funny

Yes, this is normal. By default, the mini displays show what a footswitch will do when you stomp it, not what it already did the last time you stomped it. You can reverse that behavior by editing the label of the footswitch.

You've been running a preamp straight to the board, with no power amp or cab. It's pretty rare to do that, but that's the sound you've grown accustomed to. If that's what you like and that's what your want, go for it.
